Always willing to give a second chance…read more... While abroad, I visited the beautiful town of Gengenbach, Germany. You truly feel like you're back in time and/or in a movie. Just a gorgeous town. A bustling area filled with tourists and locals alike, we stopped in for dinner on an average weeknight in the summer. We selected Pfeffermühle at random, without a lot of research. The reviews in general were good enough to give this a try. Keep in mind, it was extremely hot and humid at the time of our visit, so we opted to sit outside, like many people. In fact, I'm not sure if anyone was sitting inside. The service for drinks and ordering was pretty standard. A little slow, but standard. We ordered without issue and looked forward to our meals. As we were a foursome, I can say half of us were happy with our meals and the other half were simply "okay" with our meals. One of our group ordered the venison dish and absolutely raved about it. The service is where it gets a bit murky. It seemed like there were one, or maybe two, people working service. Our server was nice enough, but it just seemed like to many tables, at a busy time, for one person. There was an excessive amount of time between visits. At the end of the meal, we had been finished for quite some time and ultimately had to find him to get our check to leave. Would I go back? I do believe in second chances. It was not a horrible experience and I do feel that they can do better. I can order something else to try and also see if the service is improved and perhaps they had an off-night. We shall see. The service is inexorably slow. Coupled with the extremely rude waitress (who we found out later is…read morethe owner, so that explains a lot), this is by far the worst service I've experienced in Germany. I had read the reviews, so shame on me, but this was the only place in Gengenbach serving schweinhaxe, and I had to have it before going home from my Germany vacation. The food took over an hour after we ordered, which took around 20 min, and when they brought it out, they only brought one person's order of flatbread (we were 2). My schweinhaxe was another 10 min. I will say the schweinhaxe was outstanding, but the crappy service made for a disappointing evening. Even though we knew what to expect. It was much worse to experience it in person.

The fruits and veggies are picture perfect and so wonderfully fresh and tasty. And the selection of honey is stunning. I never knew there was so many! You can also eat along the way: fresh roasted chicken, wursts... pastries... It's a lovely market, with music, and also a very happy gathering of people. I love the whole atmosphere. We have markets here, one in our own neighborhood in fact, but it can't hold a candle to this one.
