Just around the corner is the baroque old town, the festival hall and the gorgeous cathedral. They have a great breakfast buffet and your dog is allowed to stay with you for a 30 euro per night fee. The hotel restaurant has great reviews and it's a nice place to stop and to have a bite of authentic Tirol cuisine. There are two TVs although we didn't use them. The TV in the bedroom didn't work. Shower is small for the size of the bathroom. It was possible but challenging to find plugs bedside for charging phones and such. There is also a lot of light that comes in from the skylights and can't be blocked. Light sleepers may find it hard to sleep after sunrise (5ish AM in May). Despite the skylights I found the room a little dark during the day. Not enough natural light for the size of the room. All this said the reason to consider this room is the rooftop deck space. The view from the roof is amazing. Great place to share morning coffee or an afternoon/evening wine or beer. Nighttime views are also amazing! Our second room was a more typical hotel room. Nothing special, but cozy and still nice. The building dates back about 700 years although most of what you see is more modern through countless renovations over the centuries. Still cool to be in a place with so much history! You can't beat the location of this hotel. You can walk to virtually everything in the old town of Salzburg and there must be 50 restaurants within 200 meters of this hotel. The hotel restaurant is good to stop in at least one. They will make a decent espresso in the morning or serve a nice meal for dinner. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Salzburg!

It seems to be a locals place since unless you are staying in the area like we were, a tourist staying in Salzburg probably wouldn't make the trip. After we ate there the first time, we then read a couple reviews in German that totally bad mouthed the restaurant. We went a second time and had as good an experience as we had the first time. So we found these reviews to be completely unwarranted.

In 2000 it was rebranded and updated, renamed the Hotel Sacher. The color scheme is the same as the historic hotel in Vienna: lots of red and white. You can stop in here and have a slice of the famous Sacher torte. There are 120 rooms and it's a central hub for the Salzburg Festival.

But none have felt like home the way Hotel Goldener Hirsch does. The hospitality is exceptional. Warm, attentive and genuine. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel not just welcomed, but cared for. Our room was beautifully appointed, with a view overlooking the Pferdeschwemme. It was comfortable in that rare way that makes you want to unpack, settle in and stay a while. Breakfast service delivered to our room each morning allowed us to ease into the day with quiet and comfort. In the evenings, we found ourselves at the hotel bar both before and after dinner, drawn in by the atmosphere and the incredibly welcoming bartender. I wish I had gotten his name. His professionalism, beautiful cocktails and way of making everyone feel like a regular added a layer of warmth that made those evenings feel special. I'm going to return. Housed in a 16th-century coppersmith workshop the hotel has the original stone floors and stylish modern décor. Service is exceptional. Ulriki, treated us with personal 5 star service. When we arrived she greeted with warm towels and a glass of Prosecco. She personally escorted us to our room which was wonderful. The complimentary mini bar was filled with water and soft drinks. We stayed in the newer building and found it to be more than sufficient. The rooms appeared recently remodeled, had air conditioning, and there was a nice bar and lobby area. The main palace building, with the famous courtyard featured in The Sound of Music, is absolutely stunning. Every room and hallway is filled with beautiful artwork and elegant décor. There was a wedding taking place during our stay, and I could imagine that rooms overlooking the courtyard might be noisy during events. Most guest rooms are located in the newer building, which met all of our needs. We did have one issue when the power and lights in our room stopped working one evening, but the staff handled it professionally and quickly moved us to another room. Overall, this is a beautiful and unique hotel with incredible history and charm. We would definitely stay here again.

One of the most memorable nights I've ever stayed anywhere! This is an incredibly historic property…read morethat has a long history dating back to 1736. It has 55 rooms in the simpler and recently totality redone Meierhof Wing and 12 suites in the historic palace. While it's peaceful and secluded, It's only about a half hour walk (slightly uphill) through gorgeous gardens and parts of castles to the Old Town of Salzburg. There are 17 acres of manicured grounds and it's next to a beautiful small lake full of ducks with views of the mountains and the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. The palace has been inhabited in the past by an Arch Bishop (whose heart is buried in the private chapel!), Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe (who was a spy in WW II) and Max Reinhardt, the incredible producer and creator of the Salzburg music festival. So many stories of intrigue in this palace! You can stay in a suite in the palace property itself, or they have an annex next-door. I stayed in the less expensive annex in their most simple room and they've all been redone and are very basic but perfectly comfortable and clean; the thing is you can spend as much time as you want next door in the palace. So I checked in and then walked over to the palace and stayed there all day. You can even stay into the night exploring the rooms and reading books in the library, walking up and down the stairs and seeing all the various paintings and incredible curiosities, pieces of art, and sit in the private baroque chapel. In the evenings, there's a bar and restaurant that's open late in the Meierhof wing. Of course the ultimate is to book one of the beautiful suites in the palace; some of them have great names like the "Marlene Dietrich" suite (who actually stayed here in the palace) and I believe that the "Max Reinhardt" suite is one of the best ones. I can't describe how amazing it is to be able to stay in an 18th century baroque palace with original furnishings and to sit in the chairs and read the books and actually touch the antiques. There are no "do not touch" signs, so you can really feel at home. I can only imagine all the intrigues that went on here! It's a bit like the movie "Dangerous Liasons"! The palace has been used as a location in several films, including some scenes of "The Sound of Music". If you're staying here, they basically give you full access to the palace (other than the private rooms, of course). The lake is absolutely gorgeous and the hotel has bikes that you can use for no extra charge and bike around the lake and town on the paths. My favorite thing was in the evening to walk around the palace, and explore the various rooms. The library is spectacular. It has a hidden door convered with books that leads to a spiral staircase which goes up to the top second level of the library. It's unfortunately blocked off, but it's so fun to find the door! Breakfast in the morning is held in the ballroom and it's one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever seen in my travels. I can't say that breakfast is the best ever but it's good. Even the most gorgeous "Palace" hotels I've stayed in like the Palace Hotel in Saint Moritz or maybe the Crillon in Paris don't have the authentic faded original glamour that this property has. It's really a must to stay here, even for one night. I'll never forget my wonderful night here. It's so easy to get to the Salzburg airport as well. I think it took me less than 20 minutes in a taxi.
