Recently dropped by here for a fun date, to take advantage of the Restaurant Week Menu and of the excellent reviews. Glad I booked a table ahead of time, as the place was almost 100% full by 8-ish pm on a Friday. Overall the experience was fairly good, mostly where the actual meal was concerned. There were a few hiccups that keep this from being a 5/5 experience, but nothing unheard of for a bustling establishment. The food was good, particularly our appetizer (the Escargot), the wine (which they list based on quality and price - moving from "good" all the way to "excellent"; a neat concept) and the dessert (as good a creme brulee as I've ever had). The service was attentive and quick, though they struggled with the number of patrons to manage. We also had the Skate fish and the Ravioli, which were OK but not quite as tasty as the rest. Paid around $135 for a dinner for two at a nice restaurant, which isn't too bad for NYC standards (certainly for the Upper West Side). What I didn't expect, as this was the first time I'd visited, was the slightly cramped quarters. The tables inside the restaurant are mostly for 2 people each, which is fine and romantic; the problem however is that you're less than a solid foot away from other people on either side. It's sort of the opposite of intimate dining - I had to focus on my date and try hard not to be distracted by our neighbors and their conversations throughout the whole meal. And being so packed and tight, the staff are constantly whizzing around to make sure everyone's taken care of. We had to ask our servers to bring us the right dessert, and to remove a couple things from our bill that weren't ours - but again, this was purely because they had so much to juggle at once. I'd be happy to stop by for a quick bite and a glass of wine at the bar rather than a full meal, next time. read more

I visited New York for work and came here with a friend. I reserved on Resy two days in advance and managed to score a table. We were running late and called the restaurant and they were accommodating to our time! When we arrived we noticed the restaurant was a little tight but we made our way in and ordered the French onion soup, ravioli, and lyonnaise salad. The food was delicious but we accidentally burned our tongue with the soup so be careful! I loved my lyonnaise salad. It came with a creamy poached egg that blended well with the sauce. read more

The egg is always perfectly cooked and mellows out the tartness of the dressing and saltiness of the lardon. Tartare is a must try, well seasoned, well balanced and... well plated! Coq au vin was tender and flavorful and light yet tender root veggies balanced the hearty protein. Beef dish- so tender and flavorful. We LOVE Amelie downtown. It's one of my husband's favorite spots. I assumed their UWS location would be similar, which is why I chose it to take the hubby for his six-year sober anniversary. I get that French restaurants historically have bad service, but this location of Amelie really took that stereotype and proved it right ten-fold. The maitre 'd was kind of offensive and insulting. Despite not being busy and having a reservation, we still stood waiting at the door for 15 minutes before being acknowledged and then another 5 or 10 to be seated, even though there were plenty of empty tables. When I asked if we could move to an open table outside, where their were plenty of tables, because we were so cramped and squeezed between two very loud table, he first told us yes. But then made us go back because he said our reservation was for inside. WHAT? One, I was never given an option for inside or outside. But two, clearly he had an available table since he was willing to move us. That he made us go back inside was ridiculous. And I didn't like feeling so boxed in. The service was typically French too -- or at least it mirrored the reputation French restaurants get for service. It took 20 minutes just to get water and drink orders. Then another 20 minutes before we got to give our order. And this is despite having only about 10 tables inside at most, with a few empty. We had to constantly flag someone down for things. The food was lackluster. My steak was overcooked. But my hubby enjoyed his meal. We love Amelie downtown and will now know to go there if we want to enjoy a meal. Because I walked away so annoyed and disappointed, which really dampened what should have been a celebratory night. SO DISAPPOINTING. With so many other options near by and city-wide, they really need to do better if they're going to get diners like us, who eat out six nights a week, back. We ordered warm pistachio crusted today cheese ball, shrimp and calamari ceviche, Magret de Canard- sauteed Long Island duck breast, sauteed peaches and corn with peach demi-glace sauce. We drank Syrah by Cotes du Rhone, Chapoutier & Alleno red wine. I wish we got more calamari in the ceviche thank shrimp because for the price we paid. After about 10-15 additional lunches, brunches and dinners at Amelie, I guess we're now regulars? Food is consistently enjoyable, though not in the top tier of what NYC has to offer. If you rate Amelie against the best of NYC's best, I'd rate the food a 3 without taking price into consideration. If you're comparing to neighborhood favorites, with price taken in consideration, it's more accurately a 4.25. Wait staff are consistently top notch: friendly / cordial and considerate, deeply professional. Plates we've enjoyed recently: - champignons (mixed mushrooms, poached egg, manchego cheese) - crispy artichoke (espelette pepper, creme fraiche, mint, orange zest) - grilled octopus (green pea hummus, potato, shaved fennel) - steak tartare (served with cornichons, mustard, toasted French bread) - grape and cucumber soup du jour (acidic and refreshing on a warm summer night, not overly sweet) - a ceviche special - steak a l'echalote (8 oz hanger steak, fries, arugula, shallot sauce) - free range roasted chicken (spring onions, baby carrots, crispy potatoes, citrus yogurt, Riesling sauce) At recent lunches and dinners, steak came a tender medium rare as requested with a generous amount of shallot sauce (not our child's favorite, but the grownups find it quite good). Chicken comes beautifully browned and juicy, flattened and weighted for even cooking. I swoon over the champignons, which are made with a copious amount of butter, further enriched by egg yolk. Crispy artichokes are enjoyable, nicely fried, but excessively oily, probably not blotted at all. Although steak tartare is made with excellent beef, it came a bit overly dressed for our tastes, made with a fairly low-brow mustard that I don't personally love. I do love the tiny (quail?) egg yolk that comes on top. A recent ceviche special with shrimp and calamari, tossed with a good amount of ripe avocado, was surprisingly well made, though perhaps not acidic enough to merit the name. It was better than the version served next door at seafood specialist Mermaid Inn. At brunch, all the classic egg dishes are consistently well made. Omelets are faultlessly fluffy, French toast is not overly sweet. Note that the indoor space is tiny, dark, and narrow (did it replace B Cafe West of yesteryear?) and the covered, outdoor dining space is a bit cramped, too, not overly picturesque. But wines by the bottle include many well-curated, simple, but delicious bargain buys. Between that and the good food and service, Amelie has just the right recipe to keep us coming back. read more

Have been to this delicious restaurant a number of times, but this last time, not only was the service not up to par, I am convinced that we got royally ripped off with our $70 Sancerre wine. The wine is served in elegant tall glassware. The initial pour is all that we received - 4 people maximum 1" in each glass. When we asked for a refill, we were told that was all there was. Well, in a really nice restaurant the bottle would be kept on ice by the table and at the very least, when a bottle is finished the waiter shows you this fact. The manager was insulted that we suggested that there should have been more & as a gesture poured us each 1/2" from the bar white wine. In general, we waited with our menus ready to order for at least 15 minutes (it was not particularly busy), the salt needed to be asked for & was given in a grinder that did not work & it took another 5 minutes to score a replacement as the food got cold. The focus did not seem to be on the guests as the staff horsed around with the manager. Getting ripped off on the wine was simply not paying attention or worse, stealing. I really enjoyed having dinner with here with our friends. I usually don't drink rose but I did and I loved it! I enjoyed my goat cheese salad and escargot and others enjoyed their mussels! The vibe is definitely warm and friendly and a great neighborhood find. We sat outside and we took our time. The tables are close together so if you want to talk about anything that you don't want others to hear don't discuss it here! Meet friends for an early dinner on Saturday. We had the Coq Au Vin, French Onion Soup, Steak Frites and the soup special. The service was very attentive and kind. The onion soup wasn't very hot, but the good thing was it wasn't salty. My steak was cooked to perfection and a good size portion. The coq au vin was a somewhat small order so it didn't fill the man up. The loire valley cab franc was delish as was the gamay. Seating in the chairs as opposed to the bench was a bit tight when the drop down the tables against the wall. So be mindful if it's lots of room you want or need. Been wanting to try their West Village location forever so I had high hopes for this place. Came here after Central Park with a last-min reservation - good thing we snagged one off of Resy as it was fully booked by the time we got there. We shared the Baked Camembert, which was my fav of the night; Its smell and taste reminded me of turnips. First time having Escargot not served in the shell but surrounding a puff pastry instead, but it was tasty nonetheless. I got the ravioli as my main and was a bit disappointed. It was rather bland, and also smaller and thinner than I'd liked. Think I just prefer Italian ravioli. It also clotted quickly which made it unappetizing. My friend's cheeseburger looked amazing though - wished I had gotten that. We were recommended the pistachio creme brûlée but neither of us liked it. The consistency was a bit odd due to the pistachio. Overall, solid food, but nothing really hit the spot. The restaurant was a lot smaller than I thought - very narrow. Service was prompt and attentive. Maybe I'll give the WV location a try. read more

Came here for their Monday mussels special, which includes fries and wine. The mussels tasted fresh and I enjoyed dipping the complimentary bread into the broth, which was flavorful and tasted of white wine. The meal altogether was very filling and delicious, although pricy. My friend got the seared hake, which she said was quite tender and delicious. The service was a little slow, but friendly. The seating was pretty limited and so it got crowded even though we went at 5:30pm. I don't see myself coming back often because of the high prices and limited seating, but I do want to try their fish and duck at some point. read more

I feel like there's been a lot of hype around Amelie lately so I was eager to come. My partner and I wanted somewhere casual yet chic for our anniversary dinner and decided on Amelie because of its wine list and small plates options. We particularly enjoyed the roasted cauliflower and were pleasantly surprised by how light the ravioli was (don't skip the truffles!!). Crème brûlée was a great end to the dinner- thin, crunchy top with the brûléed bananas underneath kept this traditionally heavy dish sweet but not satiating. I went there after I saw recommendation in Michelin's guide. I must say I was quite disappointed, the food wasn't like I expected but very average. We ordered the duck, steak, onion soup, chocolate mousse and the apple tartan. The soup was okay, not buttery like it suppose to be but very plain. The steak came with "salsa". I asked the waiter what kind of salsa and he replied "the regular salsa". In my dictionary salsa is made from tomatoes. The "salsa" was chimichurri sauce...which this was a little weird to eat Argentinian dish in a French restaurant. The apple dessert was a disappointment as well, apple jam served with small pieces of phyllo dough-not worth even $5. Food wasn't good at all very amateurish, but the manager was incredible, alerted,nice, and made us feel very welcomed and cared for everything. This spot is your spot for baked Camembert! The cheese is wonderfully seasoned with garlic confit and rosemary, and while not served with toast points as stated on the menu,, the baguette slices were soft and held the cheese sufficiently. A signature dish, this cheese preparation is so delicious, you will have to have your camera out to ensure a photo before it's devoured. The sandwiches are two meals in one, with soft baguette and fresh ingredients. The sad point was the Ravioles du Royans. While it looked appealing, the sauce was watery so as I made my way through the dish, each bite was progressively soggy. The base wasn't a sauce; it was a lightly oiled watery liquid. Perhaps the cottage cheese filling makes it watery. As for the restaurant, ample room indoors and out; the atmosphere is light, and the service fast and attentive. I'd go back for a sandwich or for a glass of wine or tea with that baked cheese. I'd go elsewhere for pasta. read more

What a horrible restaurant and rude staff! I must say: this is probably the worst French restaurant in New York City! Definitely stay away. First of all, the staff is rude! At the very beginning, the hostess yelled at us during the seating process, and when we told her that we will leave a bad review (which is what we are doing) - she said she will alert the manager and the staff, so that they "treat us accordingly". Essentially, she threatened us and delivered bad service because we wanted to exercise our First Amendment right and express our opinion on Yelp. Second, food itself was horrible. Very poorly prepared appetizers and entrees, second-rate, and not fresh. The service was extremely slow, and one of our plates was not even prepared. Then again: maybe that happened because the hostess delivered on her promised poor service. Regardless: why visit a place where you are treated like a hostage? There are some many other wonderful places in Manhattan, both French and non-French. Please visit them and not Amelie! read more

I'm always a little iffy with weekend brunch during Covid times but I called ahead just for myself as it's in walking distance so I had a table waiting for me. I was attended to after a bit of settling in and the curbside seating was nice. Ordered the steak sandwich and the hangar steak in it was delicious if slightly tougher than I would have preferred but didn't detract at all. Fries were great and easily a standout. Food is a 4, service is a 5. Happy Hour is delightful at Amelie. There is their signature warm goat cheese ball studded with pistachios. A plate of thin, freshly fried frites for $5. Almost every dish is quite good, though the chicken liver mousse tastes a bit...slippery? undercooked? Every salad is good - though ask for dressing on the side because the vinaigrettes are very sharp. Every fish dish has been cooked perfectly. I especially like the hake in a broth of artichokes, peas, carrots and olives. It is light and yet very flavorful and spring like. One issue is that while every cheese dish is good, they are also heavy so be careful about stacking them. The ravioli are very rich and cheesy - we get them as a shared app. But not if we are also getting the vol au vent escargot or the onion soup. All three are great - but getting any two might require a digestive aid. Because of this, I don't think we have ever had room for dessert. I wish they had some lighter alternatives. The service is stellar where it counts. Excellent menu advice ( as opposed to the "everything is good"), constant water refills and constant check-ins ensure that your dinner will go smoothly. read more

This place was an absolute joy. The ambience was exactly what you would want when you go to a wine bar and the service was outstanding. We came for the cheeseboard and the happy hour wine flights but ended up loving the fries and the wine list. The staff was also amazing, we had an encounter with a strange man that made me and my two other girlfriends feel uncomfortable and they responded immediately with grace and even walked us outside to make us feel safer. One of us also accidentally spilled wine all over our coats and they offered us a special cleaner to help clean it up and now my coat is good as new.
