Yep, so this is a top bar in the world for a reason. It's tippity, tippity tops. Like, top of the tops. As in, summary point: DRINK HERE IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. The Savoy has several restaurant options on the main floor of its beautiful hotel, and the American Bar is tucked away. It opens at 5pm, and if you arrive soon thereafter there is no difficulty finding a space most nights. I like sitting at the bar, so sit at the bar I did. The bartenders are attentive, but not over-the-top. You know those super-chatty bartenders? Well here at the Savoy they must have had sensitivity training because they can seemingly intuitively tell if you want to chat or not (I didn't). As soon as I got there I got a glass of water and a menu. On point, guys. The cocktail menu - come here for the cocktails! - is extensive and reads like a book. No, but literally: IT IS AS LARGE AS A BOOK. Bring your reading glasses. It's interesting, if overwhelming, detailing different options to give tribute to various regions around England. My cocktail had a mix of deliciousness like sunflower honey, and other special ingredients included things like sorrel, lemon seed, kefir, and gooseberry. It's worth mentioning that this is a place to go for the classics, too; the old fashioned was A DREAM (caps worthwhile). Cocktails are...not inexpensive. They can set you back, easily, 20GBP each. So, y'know, budget accordingly. But man is it worth it. Yelp note: Cocktails are served with little fried beans, anchovy-stuffed olives, and some spicy rice snacks. So so dissapointed, myself, my mum and son had just been for brunch and decided to pop into the savoy for a couple of cocktails. My mum asked for a cosmo, to which the waitress explained they dont do them, only whats on the menu, (which I would like to point out are special cocktails which cost more) Next to us was a table of four, we overheard them saying how it wasnt right that they dont do porn star martinis, we all started a conversation amd sharing how we wasn't impressed and for the money it wasnt worth it. Two had negronis and while nice full of ice. We spoke with a manager (a blonde lady) and expressed our dissapointment. She said they do serve regular cocktails and that she will look i to it and be back. We all expected her to return with the cocktails we all wanted but she didnt, she didnt even refurn, yet we saw her tending to other tables. We left, not happy at all. This bar has a great "old hollywood" feel set in london and the swanky Savoy hotel. Tried to get in earlier in the week - but, the wait was over an hour. This time we arrived before 5pm to beat the afterwork crowd.There's another bar in the hotel - that is supposedly good, but it also gets quickly booked. Both of the bars are on TimeOuts "Top 50 London Bars" list. The cocktail menu is a full book with festive cocktails listed under various parts of London, each with it's own tale. (Honestly, they should sell the menus as they'd make a perfect keepsake), and there's a piano player (whom a firend of mine joined at his grand piano for a song after a couple of their potent drinks) singing oldies to set the tone. For our cocktails, i chose an Old Terrace (a drink created many years ago at the Savoy - that tastes like a very strong manhattan), Someone else had an Abbey Road - can't remember what the others had, but they were all good and the wait staff was very knowledgable about the drinks despite the over-sized menu. The drinks are served without flashiness or overly fancy glasses - which fits the classic style of the place. Food is limited to nuts and olive nibbles -but, they'll bring you as many of those as you need to keep going. Prices were reasonable for atmosphere, location and London - about 18 or so pounds each. We switched to champagne with ran about 50 pounds a bottle - so a better deal I guess. Only issue I had was they have only a couple of shared ice buckets in the room. Means your ice bucket isn't sitting next to you - and makes you wonder how they know who's champagne is whose if they order the same one. Bottom Line: Definitely worth a go for a high-end historic type of relaxing drink and atmosphere. read more

I have spent enough time here in the past few weeks. I owe a review. Located off to the left of the Savoy lobby, this is one of the greatest cocktail lounges in the world. I know the Le Connaught bartenders have won more recent accolades, but the drink list here is literally historic. Just be careful if you ask for recommendations, for the staff will recommend a drink in the range of 50 to 150 GBP without batting an eye. Unlike Le Connaught, which can resemble a club atmosphere at its busiest, the American Bar focuses on an intimate setting where you can actually sit down, drink and enjoy conversation. Additionally, there is a piano man playing "American" songs. They also bring some small snacks of peanuts and olives. Greatness comes with a price. Normal cocktails go for around 15 GBP, the next tier is around 40 GBP and then 100 GBP and above. I got a lovely vintage gin drink and they came out and served me the same cocktail that was made with non vintage spirits so I could compare. It was neat. If you are a Russian oligarch or on a deep expense account, become a regular. Otherwise stop by with a young lady for a drink or two every now and then to start the evening off. read more

This place oozes sophistication and class so imagine the looks i got when I trundled in to here with jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt carrying a large amount of camera gear after going on one of my late night photography trips. (yes i got some awesome pics, always do) Being part of the savoy you can picture the elegance and vibe. It is the kind of place you would have seen Frank Sinatra having a drink with the rest of the rat pack but even them lads would have screwed at the price of a drink here. I got here just after midnight so it was not very busy and I had just missed the piano man. The bartender gave me one of those looks where he was expecting no tips but alas I am partially Torontonian and I tip good! Two old fashions later and 30 quid gone I took the walk home pretending my tripod was a walking cane and I was that dude from the Monopoly board. I was after all on the strand. Fancypants Raymond from Toronto would love this place, and if he ever visits London I will be taking him here for sure. read more

Softly-lit, with live piano music and populated by servers in all white suits, the American Bar is just one of those iconic experiences to be indulged in. I emphasize the "one" part as the average cocktail is about £15. However, the cocktail selection is quite fabulous and contains both classic drinks and new "signature" drinks. We ordered from both sides of the menu and no one was disappointed. I came at the recomendation of a co-worker who warned that his last excursion had brought him face-to-face with Nicholas Cage at the bar. My own experience was less spookyscary, however, and after having drank my way through half an Arsenal ticket's worth of cocktails, I decided the American Bar and I would meet again some day. read more

So the carpet is pretty hideous and the decor is stuffy and unexciting - but put this inside The Savoy with some five-star service and something magic happens! We wandered over here after nearby Radio Bar was full to capacity, and they found us a cosy corner for 5. Once you've finished choking over the prices (£17 and upwards eek) the cocktail list is a beauty, with a historical twist being categorised by era. After much deliberation I chose a beautiful Wingspan cocktail of gin, orange bitters, something called cocchi americano that I have no idea about, and creme de violet that meant it came clear with a purple tinge. By this time the drinks list and the waiter's impeccable manners had told us this was no ordinary bar. The service makes you feel like a celebrity having a quiet drink, and you may even spot some actual ones too (though my friends assured me that the lady in the corner was not in fact Dame Judy Dench as I was convinced). We devoured two rounds of the biscuity nutty munchies that they put out with your drinks. Then the pianist started playing next to us which happily appealed to me, being an old romantic at heart :) I won't be back in a hurry as there's far too many other interesting (and cheaper) bars out there, but this is one of those places that has a very traditional, sophisticated appeal and will likely stay a timeless classic. read more

There is nothing more delightful than sitting in the same bar as the incredible Winston Churchill did. This; The American Bar at The Savoy, takes the cake for cooler than cool of bars in the entire world. When we were in London, we stopped here often (after all, we did stay at The Savoy) and loved every second of it. This place is old school retro with the shiny silver accents, mirrors everywhere, every type of liquor, aperitif, and spirit under the sun, and swanky bartenders to dispense it all. Each night, we would sit an one of the tables or at the bar, and have our gin gimlets, or old fashion, or martinis, and they were always accompanied by some tasty crackers and olives and nuts--or sometimes cheese, if we requested. We would marvel at the people, feel like royalty, and relish in the moment of being in one of the coolest places on earth. Do not dare come here under dressed! This is London and this is The American Bar--be sure to wear your duds people. This is what the big boys and girls do while traveling about and be sure to represent appropriately. read more

It really doesn't get much better than this for a cocktail bar. The space is elegant, if a little old fashioned, but well appointed and comfortable. What stands out is the level of service, and the attention paid to every detail. The staff is considerate, helpful and excited to share the history of the establishment and each drink on the menu. The bartender executes each drink as a work of art, with attention paid to each little detail, down to how a bit of orange peel is squeezed over the rim, and the size of the ice cubes in the shaker and the glass (different, on purpose). One can ask the history of each drink on the menu, and request recommendations based on nearly any parameter and come out with something special. Not cheap, but worth it. read more

The drink menu is excellent and I get that it is a famous cocktail bar and all that. But there are other cocktail bars I prefer for a number of reasons. So, I know going here and complaining about the stupid prices may be seen as missing the point, but... YOU GUYS, COCKTAILS SHOULDN'T COST THIS MUCH. This review doesn't really matter as the American Bar was just named "Best Bar in the World" so if you're interested in going, you're going to go with or without my opinion. However, you should definitely go. Have I been to equally as good bars in the world? Yes. Does this one deserve the best bar in the world distinction? I really have no idea. But I liked it and I'd go back again. I visit a lot of these mixology bars and call me crazy, but sometimes just want a simple Hendricks and tonic as opposed to something with 13 distinct ingredients and essence of smoke. That being said, one thing I liked about the American Bar was that the drinks weren't over the top complex. At least not all of them, and perhaps they all are but my tastebuds just couldn't tell the difference. I got one of their gin cocktails which came on the rocks within a miniature greenhouse type of container. It was cute and more importantly the drink tasted amazing, like a fancy Hendricks and tonic. My friend got some bourbon concoction that wasn't my speed but the glass it was served in was lucky to escape my purse (jokes). The glassware here is excellent. Full points for presentation. My favorite thing about this bar is the atmosphere. You feel like you've stepped back in time to a bygone era of dance clubs, actual lounges, and a more leisure filled life. There's a live piano player softly making his way through the American songbook, plush velvet booths, and a healthy dose of Art Deco detailing everywhere. The only thing missing is the haze of cigarette smoke. Long story short, you should certainly go if you have the chance to. This astounding bar reminds you of every decade in history. It is a cosy, dark and very atmospheric bar- with gorgeous chatty American men in white jackets and a pianist in the middle of the room singing the absolute classics of Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and even singers from the 1920's. The staff know exactly what they're doing. They know exactly when you need to be taken care of and when you need another drink. The waiters make you feel at home by sitting you down and having a little conversation with you about your day which is really lovely to just make you feel a little more at ease. The cocktail menu is for the true cocktail fan- You need to understand the true effort that is put in these cocktails. At $14.50 each, it is worth it because they add flavours to these cocktails that you would never taste in any other cocktail bar. I had the true pleasure to enjoy the Golden Era- a drink which includes Almonds and pomegranate juice and the Restoration Celebration- a tasty champagne cocktail with a hint of cinnamon. Because this bar has so much history, you can just imagine Noel Coward, Charlie Chaplin or Marilyn Monroe sitting in the corner enjoying a drink with a cigerette in their hands. Its a real treat to come here and I definitely do recommend everyone to at least walk into the hotel to see the beauty of it all. read more

Don't be intimidated by the surroundings, it's lovely. We were heading home, and while on the Strand decided to have a one for the road at the Savoy. We looked ok, but certainly not like typical Savoy Hotel residents. My friend's hand and neck tattoos were on show and we had been shopping. We breezed in and headed for the American Bar (on the left as you enter and follow the signs). We were asked to wait to be seated, but when I said we'd rather sit at the bar, we were told to go ahead. The last time I was there was before the big refurbishment. The bar used to be bright and woody. Now it's dark and clubby, lit almost entirely by the table tea lights. Its very romantic and discrete, and even with the tinkly piano player, you felt obliged to talk in hushed tones. The bartender greeted us with a very affirmative 'Hello Gentleman'. I ordered two Manhattans. The bartender asked 'And how would you like them?'. I ordered them without looking at the drinks menu, and expected them to be about £15 each. But I had never been asked to specify any of the ingredients before. 'What are my options?' I enquired. 'Some people like them dry. Others sweet. We tend to serve them as classics'. I sensed he was trying to catch me out when he then asked which bourbon I wanted. 'Surprise me!' I challenged. But assuming they have bourbons that are probably £100s a shot, I added 'But don't shock me'. 'I'll fix you two house Manhattans' he replied with a definite American twang. He probably should have done that in the first place, but I enjoyed the banter. The drinks were perfect, of course. They were so good, that we decided on more. Next I ordered two Whiskey Sours and we ended with a couple of Mint Juleps. The bartender's accent became more and more British, and after chatting longer, he told us he'd not been there very long and that when his shift ended he gets the night bus home. My BFF (bartender friend forever) from my favorite bar ever, Angel's Share in New York, recommended I come here for cocktails. So come I did, alone and thirsty. The wait for one person was about 15 minutes, which wasn't too bad. I pretended to be totally fascinated by the fans in the tiny room of artifacts, and the 15 minutes flew by (as quickly as it can fly by when you're staring at fans). They sat me by the piano, which probably creeped out the pianist after I had a few drinks as I was totally staring at him willing him to play I Dreamed a Dream. I KNOW, I am that girl. The drinks were good but so expensive... had a Moonwalk, a tall creamy drink that tasted of island and citrus, and Green Park, a green, vegetable like drink with basil and celery bitters. The bar is dimly lit and very romantic, it's definitely the place to go on a third date. The service is immaculate and they even refill your complimentary tray of olives and nuts. read more

This is the classiest and most upscale cocktail bar I've been to in London. My family and I have been here twice, both times before dining at the Savoy Grill. Upon arrival we were warmly invited to sit down- they have a variety of plush couches and chairs which are very comfortable and classy. There is also grand piano in the centre of the room that a gentleman was playing softly whilst we were there. The cocktail list is absolutely huge, complete with some extraordinarily expensive vintage cocktails. I ordered the 'Restoration Celebration' which is a gin based cocktail with cherry, cinnamon and lemon, topped with champagne. It was delicious- fruity with a great complexity of flavours. My husband had the 'Secret Agent' which was hands down the nicest whisky cocktail that I had ever tasted. They also brought some tasty nibbles to accompany our drinks. Our charismatic and attentive server made the evening especially memorable. He explained the cocktail menu to us before giving us time to make our selections. Upon delivering the drinks, he remembered who had ordered which drink. He took the time to chat with us, as well as ask each of us how our cocktails were after we had finished. Overall I love the service and ambience of the American bar. As I mentioned in my earlier review, every special occassion in my family is marked with a trip to the American bar. And last night, for my mum's 60th birthday, it was no exception. We knew the bar to us. I couldn't have been more excited. The Savoy has been closed for two years and the anticipation to go back to the best bar in London was overwhelming. But then we arrived. A half an hour wait for the table - strictly no reservations. No waiting area to speak of. An Ok but slightly half-past-tenner-ish pianist. Literally no change or upgrade to the bar despite the hotel's makeover. The service is still impeccible, sadly the magic for the American Bar seemed to have gone. read more

The service is excellent and they have a piano and is this guy playing and singing I loved that!!! Fun and entertaining!!! We ventured over the American Bar on a suggestion from another local bartender. We arrived and were told there were no seats available, but to try back in a hour. They sent us over to the Beaufort Bar where we spent a lovely hour. When we arrived back in about a hour, the hostess remembered us right away and whisked us to our bar seats that were waiting for us. The bartenders were super friendly and knowledgable. The place was just lively enough and the piano player was awesome. Drinks were delicious, too! We got to talking to another couple at the bar beside us who were also from the US which lead to a conversation about Vegas. The bartender, Luca, joined in and we found out that he got into bartending because of a Vegas bartender. A bartender we happen to know (we frequent Vegas way too much). We took a couple of pictures and finished off our evening at the American Bar. We left happy and with a promise to Luca that we would let Flippy know he has a fan in London! I would definitely suggest the American Bar to anyone visiting London or in the London area. Just be prepared to possibly wait a bit for a seat as it is a sitting only type of place...no standing at the bar, etc. read more

Beach Boys covers on the piano, outstanding table service, warm room full of wealthy, gorgeous alien people. As we were staying at The Savoy this past weekend, and the receptionist had specifically highlighted that American Bar was one of the best bars in the world...well, I was already sold before I stopped by for a couple drinks on a Saturday night. The atmosphere at night is great for relaxing and listening to American oldies sung via the piano. You'd never know that the gentleman playing the piano was a Brit if he didn't speak between songs - his American accent across all regions and musical styles was on-point. The lights are dimly-lit, and there are tables abound where you can sit and take in the scene or catch up with friends. The bar has a very limited number of seats, so if you want to see the magic happen in front of you - it will be hard to land that spot. I would also say that most folks here are dressed up a little, but not as much as the folks sitting in the back at the Beaufort Bar, IMO. The cocktail menu here is quite wide-ranging and separated out by liquors, as well as by boroughs within London. I'm not sure if there is a connection between the cocktail styles and the regions - you might have to drink an awful lot, hopefully over multiple visits, to figure that out - but nonetheless, the end result is that you are enjoying finely-crafted and exquisitely thought-out cocktails that vary across the board. I ended up having two in full and sipping another, all of which were excellent. I really enjoyed the Secret Agent, with a couple different whiskeys lending a hard base to the drink that was made much more drinkable with lemon juice and egg white on the top. It still retained the sharp edge of the whiskey, particularly the bourbon, but with a lightly fruity overlay that balanced very well. I really enjoyed Punk Rock - aside from my long-standing affinity for the genre, the grapefruit juice pairs quite well against the rum, and I got a good chuckle (intentionally?) from the crystallized sugar shaped in the form of a spiked haircut. That said, it does serve a purpose - the sugar helps to modulate the alcohol in the drink and make it very drinkable. My first drink was the Green Park, which I have to say I liked the least - probably because it was the lightest - but it was still excellent. I think the celery bitters gave it a bit more of a plainer flavor than I expected, but what struck me was how clean the drink was - barely any hint of liquor, just a touch of the basil and the egg white, yet the color was strikingly green. Very much a work of art, as well as a tribute to the name of the beverage itself. There is no food served here, as we found out the hard way (we wanted to split a slice of cake but were informed that they carried no silverware or plateware here) aside from the tray of olives and nuts, but that's okay. Take your time to soak in the retro atmosphere and the absolutely delicious drinks...it's one of the best bars in the world for a reason. And if you have a large wallet (or get a bit too tipsy), there are some very pricey cocktails made with aged spirits that could certainly be of interest. Drinks ain't cheap here - as or more expensive than nearly any spot I have been to in NYC - but they are very good and worth every pence. read more

Just returned from a detail that included working with the Special Branch in London. They took me to this bar...I laughed when I saw the name...The American Bar! But once inside, what a place. It has been around since the late 1880's! Survived WWII and countless ups and downs. History is all over the walls. The drinks even have history. Anyway, it is a very elegant and classy place, but one that has to be enjoyed once! I thought being an American I could get a deal....no such luck! This is a must see place.
