I started working out at this gym when it was called Gold's Gym back in 1983. It's truly a body-builder's gym But lately the kids have taken over. Just today I was in the legs area and it was full of kids and they left their stuff all over the floor, gym bags, equipment, even a bench all of which blocked the very narrow passage way through the area. Then they started dropping 300lbs dead lifts onto the platform sounding like a bomb going off. Dropping the bar is ok if you are unable to complete the lift but not to show off how much weight you can drop. Plus they were using iron plates which are not allowed on the platform. They should use the "bumper plates" to protect the platform from damage. This is all around lunch time. I guess we can expect this for the rest of the summer until the kids go back to school. I just wish the staff would do their job and monitor what's going on. read more

Used a guest pass here when I was shopping around for gyms recently. I can understand why some people like it, just not my cup of tea. Plenty of machines, not the best layout with cardio and a workout room / lockers upstairs and the weights downstairs. No free weights in the workout room so you'd have to lug them up the stairs and back down when done. Everything seems really old? Like someone collecting gym machines and when they get a new one, they just push the other one over a couple feet... It makes the space feel disjointed and chaotic. I don't know if I'll ever get the smell out of my nose... gym bro / gals, socks, sweat, and air freshener to attempt to mask it. Also, I've never had so many people interrupt my workout mid set to ask to use what I'm in the process of using... I understand working in when it's packed. But it wasn't, it was off times and people were still interrupting to take things... Very odd sense of entitlement, just wait 10 minutes until I'm done please. Example, I'm hip thrusting on the platforms and someone asks to squat on the rack in front of me on 12 pm on a Friday... the squat rack over opened up 1 minute after they started their set...? I feel like that's just the norm and culture here which I'm not a fan of. Also guy to girl ratio is off the charts at like 15:1. No comment there. Again understand why some people like it, but it was a little outdated and the vibe was off for me. read more

I joined American Barbell Club a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier with my choice. Melea gave me a tour when I signed up--she was friendly, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions. The gym has a serious lifting vibe but with a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere. It's clean, well-maintained, and members show real respect by wiping down equipment and racking their weights. There are plenty of squat racks, a solid selection of cardio machines, and the sound of clanking plates adds to the energy. It's dirty... I've been training here for years, and was a long time group ex instructor up until Covid hit. I like that they have a lot of equipment, but gym smells like a barn-and they DO not mop the gym floors . There is a "stain" that's been in the same spot under a recline bench that has been there for 2 years or longer... what is it ? A spilled protein drink, or old vomit, or sweat and DNA? For the price, you definitely should be mopping/disinfecting and cleaning the gym floors at least 2x a month... why don't you clean? My advice :Bring a towel, and always put a barrier between you and the benches- a towel , shirt with sleeves and wear lifting gloves. A friend of mine contracted "shingles" on her shoulder ( from another location) because she wears tank tops and failed to disinfect the bench she was using. Do not waste your time going to this gym, I would give him zero stars. On any given day, you walk into this gym and there's atleast 2 or 3 machines are wrapped with caution Tape. OUT OF ORDER and typically not repaired within a for weeks. The gym is dirty and old outdated equipment. Nearly every day there's a garbage can sitting in the middle of the gym. Collecting water from the upstairs, not sure. What's going on with that. Staff is not very friendly. Whatever you do, do not sign any contracts.You will be completely disappointed. They try to keep this gym nice, but it has gone downhill over the years as the membership prices have gone up. In the summer, the AC is kept in the 70s (the thermostat is in plain view), and it is uncomfortably warm. This uncomfortable warm temp can even be felt in the winter months. On holiday weekends, they will post gym hours that are not adhered to. The doors will lock 15-20minutes before the time that has been posted for a week or so. Some people strive/drive to get there in that last 15min to get whatever done, only to find a locked door. Members leave trash in the showers, that isn't cleaned out frequently. This is both a member (well some of them) and staff monitoring issue. read more

Definitely one of the best gyms in the Bay Area hands down. If you're into weightlifting, this is the place to go. Large abundance of every type of machine, and also niche ones at that! price has nearly doubled since I started coming 4 years ago. ac stopped working in the summer, WiFi is spotty at best, staff are stand-offish and unhelpful, telling me to "go out and explore" when I asked for help finding an attachment because I already looked and couldn't find it. I can't justify paying the 70$ that go towards building more gimmicky rooms like the useless recovery room I've never seen anyone use (which you have to pay another fee for), "fixing the ac" when my friend who is an HVAC technician who lifts there and knows the staff literally offered to do it for free but was turned away, and paying for staff who put in minimal effort towards maintaining a positive culture. this is my last time coming here, I miss my friends, I miss the affordability, and I miss the culture this place used to have that seemingly left with robin. hurts on a personal level because of how long and how much I used to enjoy coming here. read more

Walking by, this building looks more like a regular office building than a gym, but my son really likes coming here and he says no one's really here due to the pandemic and everything's spaced out, so he likes the feeling of having the gym to himself. It's incredibly cool in there with the AC on blast, and he likes all the free weights and different workout machines. read more

I remember going to this gym when it was Gold's 20 years ago. I like the old-school iron gym feel, but in the year I've been going I've watched it steadily decline. I don't like writing reviews that just bash an establishment for no specific reason, so I'll be very specific. In addition to broken equipment, the place is grimy and dirty. The first floor bathrooms are filthy. It doesn't smell good. The staff is inattentive, not necessarily welcoming, and often unknowledgable on their own procedures. The gym rules aren't enforced: Members videoing themselves, monopolizing equipment, not wiping down machines, to name a few. Then there's the lack of sanitizing spray bottles, and hand sanatizer they ran out of for nearly two weeks. Finally, I had enough. Going into the winter months, I felt this was a place that could get me sick. For the monthly dues, I really expected better, especially given their competition. Sadly, I've ended my membership. If they could only turn it around, clean it up, and offer a better overall experience, I'd consider coming back. None of my criticisms are un-fixable. I hope this gets management's attention, because real iron gyms are hard to come by. read more

Realistically a 2.5. I've been coming here for years and I'm glad they're reopening and want them to stay open. They've taken steps in the current pandemic situation such as closing off the cardio area, lockers, water fountains, and showers. They've also updated some equipment like replacing the aging dumbell rack.I do have suggestions for improvement. There are now more cleaning stations, but the towels aren't perforated so inevitably you're grabbing the roll with your hands to tear. The towels aren't something you're going to sanitize. I also think there should be hand sanitizer readily available for after using machines. My final critique is I think there needs to be an employee wandering around to enforce masks. There's a non zero number of people taking them off to talk or not having them properly over their face. read more

All the equipment is fun and I haven't even used all of it. This is definitely a good spot where everyone is into their craft! I came in to check out the gym, look at memberships, and possibly get a pass to try it out. First off, the front desk staff are not knowledgeable on their own pricing and packages. I asked about the enrollment fee, annual fee, and monthly fee. I'm sorry but I expect that if you're going to talk to me about packages and enrollment, you should know what tf you're talking about. 2. when I received a tour, the girl who walked me around was rude, short tempered, and obviously annoyed. 3. the bathrooms are freaking disgusting. 4. it smells like a hot and sweaty ball sack throughout the gym. They could benefit from better ventilation. 5. despite their sign out front saying they give you a complimentary pass, dude at the front tried to charge me $10. Really?! Your monthly dues are $19- and you wanna charge me $10 for one day? GTFOH Only positives were they have a pretty decent list of class work outs, which I'm bummed I didn't get to try, and there is a lot of eye candy there Overall, I'd rather pay a little more for better service (friendly and knowledgeable staff) and a cleaner gym. read more

Place is great to work out in. I been coming here two months and I rarely had to wait for a squat rack. In the rare occasion when I did, I just do deadlifts instead coz there's always more than enough bars and platforms. One star deducted because the place always, always, always smells like feet or balls or a combination of both. You get used to it and kinda forget about it when you're inside for more than 10 mins, still I hope that I didn't have to. read more

Pretty nice gym, especially if you like weights. This place has a very large variety of strength training machines, though there's still a good amount of cardio upstairs. The staff were pretty friendly, and you can get a 3 day free trial here. However, the equipment seems a little worn down or old. They don't have an actual water bottle filler, and the showers are kind of dark and creepy. There is also sometimes a chemical/cleaner smell, and the AC is not super great. read more

The staff is evil ;-) My shirts don't fit any more! No-one warned me that the XL shirts I've been comfortably wearing for years would get smaller from this gym. All my new shirts have to be XXL. I've got a drawer full of t-shirts that bind on my shoulders. This is incredibly unfair, the staff should have warned me. On the plus side, I'm going often enough to earn free t-shirts with their rewards program. Full disclosure, I've been going there for years, staff is super friendly, members are super friendly, and even if I only get in 20 minutes - it improves my day. read more

I cannot believe it has taken me 25 years to write a review on this incredible gym! Shame on me , but just the fact that I have been a member that long is a testimony to how great it must be. Additionally, I have averaged 5-6 days of attendance weekly in those 25 years, so i have used the gym thoroughly and have witnessed a lot of changes over the years. There are so many great things to comment on, but for me the personality of a gym means a great deal. I have used all of the American Barbell Clubs, but the Campbell gym has been my main hub over the majority of my membership, and the people at the reception area along with the managers are THE BEST..........hats off to Jaz, Kristina, Connor, Ren, Frank, Joseph, Jesse, and Kyle (hope I did not leave anyone out ). The group is warm and welcoming from the time you walk through the door. They are patient with members and will assist you with any questions or issues you have. Each person takes their job seriously but they look like they love what they do and the dynamic between personalities is awesome. Kudos to Robin for pulling the staff together and creating a "family feeling" among them but at the same time developing a sense of professionalism in the environment. The gym has always been well maintained, from the equipment maintenance ( Jon Navarro hats of to you for exceptional work on repairs and installation at how many clubs?) Also, the cleanliness of the gym has been great, especially when certain members have a disregard for any sense of cleanliness courtesy....if we all did our part when using the bathroom for example, it would make it that much more pleasant for the next person who walks in. Ever get tired of being lied to? This gym has been going downhill ever since it reopened. The equipment is broken and dangerous and no matter how many times I tell the staff I get this "that's just the way it is" attitude on top of the blatant lie of "I'll have the maintenance man look at it" WHAT FUCKING MAINTENANCE MAN! There are machines that have been broken before COVID and are still not working. Fraying tricep ropes, weight stacks that you can't fit pins into and preacher machines that actually slap you in the shins since the safety pin was sheared off years ago. I'been coming to this gym for 3 years. When I first came i was impressed by variety of machines there, it definitely satisfies any routine you have. For those who is complaining about cleanliness - maybe consider switching to some fancy fitness/ spa ? Its hardcore gym, period. I signed up with this gym at the beginning of the year and I really liked it. I don't care much for the staff as they are pretty young and their customer service is pretty bad. They always seem like they're annoyed with you, never smiling but maybe say hi to you if you say hi to them... wherever. Great equipment selection. When everything closed down in March I could have cancelled my membership but I also wanted to support my local business. I wanted to have a gym to come back to when things opened up, and as a business owner myself, I understand the difficulties in these times especially for gyms. Once things opened back up mind you, I had being paying for my membership for months before getting back in there. I started going back to the gym and didn't realize until it was brought to my attention that I had changed my card on file. They were letting me in for over a week before the told me my card on file was bad. In this event i had to pay for a new membership. Then less than two weeks later everything shuts down again and the night it was announced we'd be going into the purple tier they proceeded $84 out of my account. When I saw that I immediately contacted them and asked to cancel my membership and to refund the money which they did not, I guess in all reality they don't have to. I think what really bothered me is the person who emailed me got smart with me about the situation. If y'all knew you found out you had to shutdown, and people would lose access to your services, why would you go and yank money like that? How about asking us what we want to do? Ask us if we'd be willing to pay a reduced membership fee to support the gym during these times and I'd have obliged happily, but I feel this gym found out about the shut down, took my money and ran with it. Totally treated me like a number. So yea I get it, maybe "technically" and I mean very technically you don't owe the money back, but the way yall went about it was kinda shady and I won't ever support this gym, it's owners or staff ever again. I will also share this experience with my peers to stay away from here because this gym and it's owners don't give a damn about you. It's all about the money at the end of the day. I've been coming to American Barbell for almost 4 years, back when it was still Gold's Gym. One of the best things about this particular gym, is the amount of equipment available, and lack of cardio machines taking up precious space! Don't get me wrong, there is a small upstairs section for all your cardio needs, I'm just more into the weightlifting lifestyle. Even on the busiest of days (looking at you M-W after 5pm gym goers!), I'm able to get in my full routine. Might be a little out of order, but it gets done. Front staff has always been nice, greet you when you come in, and wish you a goodnight when you leave. This is even with the turnaround staff, which I've seen happen about twice. Parking is abundant. Just remember, walking is good for you! I've moved to the North San Jose/Santa Clara area, so this won't be my home gym anymore. But this will always be the place where I got my gains! read more

Stay away from this place! After the government issued the Shelter-In-Place orders, I tried to contact the gym to cancel my membership, but could never get a response. They continued to charge me despite an acknowledgement on their own site that they couldn't operate. Over a month of trying to get refunds and a cancellation later, I still hadn't received any communications from them. I successfully disputed the charges with my credit card, but still they charge me! So I use to come here when it was Golds GYM. Something happened and it's now American Barbell Clubs. There's really no difference from what it is and what it was. The front desk is the same. The layout is pretty much the same as before and the cliental is the same...accept for a few who 1) Left because their loyalty to Golds or 2) didn't want to pay $29 over $15 a month. However it feels the same to me and I will still come here because it's a great place to get your blood pumping and it's pretty close to my house. I would've submitted picture but photo taking in a gym is cliche and not something I do....at a gym. If you're looking for a solid gym than ABC will be a good choice. 8/8/17 Update: I forgot to mention they have some new equipment while keeping most of the previous equipment which leaves you with alot of choices to choose from.The also have some real cool apparel and some good good supps!Being here for a month after being out of the gym for 2 years it's a real comfortable setting. read more

I go to the Santa Clara location. I love it. This is what I need. I lift for my summer college track training. They have all the necessary equipment and people know lifting etiquette. About 7 stations. All I needed was the equipment, a larger building, not to draw attention, and a bathroom. Haha. It's perfect. I have been going to American Barbell for over twenty years ( stared when it was Golds) and it is a decent gym where you can get good workout. The quality of the staff fluctuates over time, but you can generally find them at the desk chatting up each other or friends. Last year I signed up for Silver Fitness, a program offered through my health insurance. It paid my gym dues each month. I was notified in Nov. that American Barbell would no longer participate in the program. The owner posted a letter at front desk stating they were not comfortable any longer due to control issues and not money. I would have to go back to my previous month to month dues. When I contacted staff I learned that I would not be going back to my old dues, but the dues more than doubled. So much for " not being about the money". Being an old dog, I don't like change, but don't like being fed B.S. either. read more

Amazing gym. I go when it opens at 5am on weekdays and I go at 6am on weekends because it opens at 6am weekdays. Not many people go there, around 12 people max, and it's always the same people there. I go every single day along with those same group of heads. Great gym environment. Fair pricing for the memberships. I high recommend this gym. read more

Enough equipment to make it so you aren't standing around waiting for a machine or rack. Big plus. Hours aren't too bad, not 24 hour, but midnight most days. They handled the pandemic very well, clean, mandatory masks, and capacity sizes. A clean gym. Price is under 50 dollars a month, not too bad for 2021. read more

Scammed by American Barbell Club. Beware. While American Barbell Club has been closed the past four months due to covid 19 they have been charging me $8 a month. They say the charge is to reserve my monthly rate which is lower than any of the rates they offer now (say what?). I have been trying to cancel my membership since March because I am high risk for covid due to age but they have not been answering the phones. So they have been charging me but not allowing me to cancel membership? Today American Barbell on Hamilton opened and the only way I could cancel my membership *today* was in person. And the gal at the desk said for "a chance" at getting the $8 a month reversed I had to email the office. Eventually she gave me a number but it goes straight to a mailbox. Sure feels like a scam to me so beware! read more

Definitely have a great appreciation for this place after moving out of town to somewhere with fewer gym options. They have tons of variety of equipment, have several sets each of the more popular equipment, the pricing is cheap, they offer flexible plans (Week passes are reasonably priced and perfect for a brief visit back), the staff is friendly and helpful, and so on. The only times I've had to wait on equipment seem to be when there are reduced hours for a holiday. read more
