In Alaska, this is especially true because we are isolated and it's so important to our local economy. Furthermore, Alaska, and Homer in particular is teeming with artists. I suppose our amazingly beautiful but short summers and long, dark winters give our local artists lots of time to reflect on Alaskan beauty. I've never seen so many talented artists in one place. As such, I realize the longer I live here, to more desensitized I have become to good art. So when a particular artist catches my eye, it follows that they must be REALLY good. High Tide Arts is the home of Jens and Leslie Klaar. Jens is a talented knife maker and Leslie creates wonderful mosaics and watercolors. Leslie's work is characteristically Alaskan-themed. Her watercolors and mosaics are very different. I love the bold use of colors in her mosaics that hint at Japanese origami. Her paintings are in an entirely different style and equally fabulous. She has prints and originals for sale as well as art cards. High Tide's gallery sells art and jewelery made by many other talented Alaskan artists as well. The gallery is only open during the warm season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but you can also order from them online. They do take credit cards as well.

All by local artists and some of the stuff at reasonable prices (by gallery standards). The exhibit I got to see - Ryan Romer - Yup'ic/Athabaskan artist from Anchorage - was quite inspired. Gives a great vibe as to the kind of fresh, creative art this gallery wishes to promote. Feels like a peaceful, well-curated place. Great place to pop in, while away a little time, feel inspired and maybe even find a nice gift or art piece for yourself without going into debt.

The have gallery quality, high end items that made me salivate. They have some of the most beautiful hand-carved and painted totems I've seen anywhere. They also have some vintage Native craft items that are absolutely stunning. The staff are very friendly and helpful. This is a really incredible store... a real surprise on the Spit. Avoid the cheesy t-shirts and what-not and save your pennies for Inua. You will go home with something wonderful and unique. Just a warning... leave children outside... this is not the kind of place you'd want to risk having a boo-boo.

A first time visit for me at this hidden gem of a private art gallery introduced me to the…read morepaintings of Norman Lowell. A friend bought an original oil painting from Norman in Anchorage, in 1967; while Norman was teaching painting, and long before he became famous. We went to the art gallery on a pleasant overcast day. The dirt road, named Norman Lowell Road is known best by locals. The road comes from the East to the Sterling Hwy immediately north of the Anchor River bridge, so it's easier to see when driving north from Homer, AK. There are signs among the woods by the highway, but they were hard for me to spot, while driving southward, without the help of my friend. Anyone who appreciates landscape vistas and scenic views will appreciate this gallery. There are some expressionistic paintings, too. We had pleasant conversations with Norman and one of his sons, who helps him with the gallery. Norman "hung up his brushes" in 2017 because of failed eyesight; however, Norman tries to be in the gallery daily. This gallery, which is free to visitors, is huge at 10,000 sq ft. The floor plan invites one to discover a new room with ever larger paintings as you make your way through the gallery. In the rooms with the largest paintings, Norman displays many sculptures and carvings by other artists behind the low wall that keeps viewers back from the paintings. So much to see and appreciate! For me, it will take another visit or two to take everything in. In the last room, where prints and a few original oils are for sale, there is a long wall with Norman's last oil paintings done in 2016; they are not for sale. The gallery's website is normanlowellgallery.net A bonus treat is to learn about how Norman and his wife homesteaded the property. Their original cabin filled with some memorabilia is open to visitors, and it is close to their present home, and the nearby gallery.
