It's been around for a very long time, since 1939 in this location. It really has two faces- Face #1 is that it is a Christian camp for young folks. I can't speak to this as my little munchkin is now in her forties and lives in Denver! Face #2 is a venue for corporate retreats, large social gatherings, extended family reunions, generally rentals of all types. This review speaks to these kinds of experiences. Let's get into the details- Location- Nestled behind citrus groves and on beautiful Lake Trout, they are about a 1 mile from US Route 27 just after you cross the northern Highlands County line. Signage is good and they are a snap to find. Visiting- You can't just stop by as others may be occupying the site. Check their website and reach out to arrange a tour. Facilities- It's a 25-acre site! For single-day events they can handle about 150 folks. If your needs include an overnight stay that is absolutely possible. For that, they can sleep about 120. They can supply food, or you can arrange your own. For you corporate team-building types, they have the ubiquitous rope courses, both high and low, and other related stuff. With 25 acres, they can afford to diversify. It turns out they have quite a reputation as a wedding venue! Pro Tip- Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms are prohibited. I realize some events might typically include beer & wine. That's not gonna happen here. Expect nicely maintained infrastructure with plenty of shade from our famously hot Florida sun! Staff- I've attended a couple of events here and they have been top notch! If you have this type of need in Central Florida, these fine folks should absolutely be on your list for consideration.

Large lake that has clearly been set up for scuba training. There is a large parking lot and a…read morelarge concrete pad with many picnic tables that classes can use to set up gear, brief their dives, etc. The path from the pad to the lake has been cleared and is easy to traverse in full gear. They recently put up "sails" over the picnic tables to keep most of the sun off, which is really helpful. Every time I go, I can see some new improvement to the facilities. The lake itself is laid out with many lines and markers to facilitate underwater navigation. They have set up some "fun" things to see, such as mounting bicycles or creating a "gnome garden," sinking a boat with skeletons on board, etc. There are platforms that can be used for skills. The lake is good for Open Water and for Advanced classes. The bottom is fairly silty and it's easy to kick up a "storm" of silt and screw up visibility. The viz is between 10 and 20 feet (on a good day), and mostly greenish, so make sure you're sticking together. There are two port-a-potties and a small changing room...and that's it. Bring lots of water and snacks in a cooler. Waivers and reservations are done online. If you're a scuba instructor, register with the management of the lake (free) to get an instructor ID number. Use that number when you make reservations for your classes. Instructors are free, students pay $20 plus $1.20 in tax. Well worth it. When I have the time and students are willing to make the drive (it's 2 hours from my home and scuba shop), I prefer to do training here because I can take my time and not worry about the tides at Blue Heron Bridge.

Of course, the stick would clunk a gator on the snout first! I finally got around to visiting this particular lake. Do your homework- If you are not from the area and looking for a place to swim & picnic, this isn't it! This lake has a lot of private homes surrounding it, but it has a big reputation for SCUBA divers. There is a divers parking lot with a few picnic tables where they lay out their gear. Local organizations hold diving classes here. There is also an adjacent boat ramp, but there is NO public swimming! Pro Tip- If you are traveling with little munchkins and looking for swimming & picnicking, I recommend Donaldson Park in downtown Avon Park. It's just minutes away. Nice beach. Divers love this place because the water is so clear and it's up to 50ft deep. If SCUBA is your thing, this is a four star stop.

Was pleasantly surprised at the course conditions, and how nicely the greens rolled. My concern was when I walked in the door and showed my coupon, which was not expired, I was told by the person helping me that my coupon was not good on the weekend. Nowhere on the coupon did it indicate or state that the coupons were not valid on the weekends. When I discussed this with the person helping me, he basically shrugged it off and said "too bad". It's unfortunate since it's one of the nicer courses around but, when the staff treats you like that, and they falsely advertise a reduced price (even though it was only a couple of dollars) it makes the whole experience bad.

However, there's the traffic and parking and the expensive food etc. Sometimes it would be nice to have a beach day without all the hassle and expense. Let's go to a lake beach! City parks can be wonderful choices, especially if you've got kiddoes and this is one example. Arriving- It's very close to downtown Avon Park but there are some side streets to travel so let your GPS do its thing. Parking is no problem and there is a restroom building onsite. Food- There are no food services onsite but US Route 27 and downtown Avon Park are 5 minutes away with lots of varied food options. Of course, you could bring a cooler. Lake- The lake is called one of the oldest in North America. It's beautiful and clean. There is a public boat ramp, and the fishing is considered excellent. The beech is white ands and clean and basic. There are covered pavilions with picnic tables available. If you're going to be a while, grab one of these. There is a very nice lakeside walking path. Conclusion- In this economy, folks are looking for ways to have a nice time without breaking the bank and this nice park may meet your needs.

Lake June-in-Winter, in Lake Placid, Florida, is a 3,500 acre natural freshwater lake. It is bordered on the west side by the Lake June-in-Winter Scrub Preserve State Park. Another public access point on the north side of the lake is Lake June Park and Pier. Park amenities include a playground with swings and slides, basketball court, boardwalk, pier, and a beach where you can swim. The park also contains a clubhouse that can be rented for private events. During my visit kids were swimming at the beach while other people were enjoying a picnic with friends at the tables. I enjoyed walking through the park and taking in the scenic view of Lake June-in-Winter. Next to the Lake June Park and Pier is another park, HL Bishop Park which has a public boat dock and a fishing pier where you can catch large mouth bass and bluegill.
