Listen, I hate taxes more than anything, and I go through this every year. It's a long story, but the guy who did my taxes for years since moving back isn't doing them this year so my mom and I had to find a new person to do it. The gentleman (Alan) who does the taxes here bases his prices off how complicated they are. He has an MBA from Harvard and is super cool to deal with, along with being reasonably competitive with his pricing compared to other accountants. My mom and I went together and he took us at 7PM on a Friday night. He had mine done (the easier of the two) in 15 minutes and my moms (who's more complicated) in about 30 minutes. We both sat with him separately to go through each item and things went smoothly. We both paid by check, as I don't believe he takes any other form of payment. You can ask, but that's what it is. Overall, he filed it electronically and he said I should get my refund in about two weeks. For me, I spent about $225 for everything, and my mom's was $390. Most places we called were a flat fee of $400 to $450, so this pricing is fabulous compared to what's out there. Alan's located in downtown Berkley and I do recommend him! read more

Alan did my taxes- first time I'd ever had somebody else do them. $300 seemed high for this service which took about 40 minutes, except he saved me more than that by finding deductions I wouldn't have. He asked some questions that the self-hell software applications don't. He filed for me, I just had to mail in my checks by April 15th myself since I wasn't prepared at the time I met Alan. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is that I didn't receive a response to some questions I had after the fact, although follow-up help is included in the original fee. read more

I have been seeing Alan for several years for tax services, mainly because he was recommended by a friend since the nature of my consulting work was becoming more complicated and I needed an expert to help not only during tax time, but also throughout the year to ensure I was properly capturing write-offs. Since the beginning, he was very difficult to reach to schedule appointments (and frankly he only responded to emails from my husband), which made me feel as though I was not worthy of his time or services. He also provided little direction or counsel on how to manage write-offs. This year, although I was hesitant, I decided to try to work with him again. Even though I no longer live in MI and my CPA needs have changed, I didn't have another CPA recommendation so I reached out to Alan again for help. After multiple attempts via email (and one un-returned voicemail) to schedule time with him, I finally decided to take my business elsewhere. When I told him I was frustrated and requested my returns for the last three years, he responded right away with my returns (shocker), but didn't acknowledge his lack of responsiveness or the fact that after three years, he was losing a client. I don't know if it's because I am a woman and my tax needs aren't important enough for his time, or customer service is not his forte, but I highly encourage you NOT to work with Alan. read more

A friend recommended Alan several years ago. Initially, I found the office atmosphere pleasant and was delighted to receive refund within a matter of days after my return was filed. My problems with Alan began when I questioned an error in our 2012 return which resulted in a 900..+ state bill & penalty. When I informed him of the problem, he seemed to dismiss my concerns, said he'd take care of it "just write a letter to the state. This was never done, despite numerous requests. My husband & I continued using his services primarily because we formed a relationship with Reid Beyerlein the Raymond James financial advisor with whom Alan shares an office, As the client base was being built, it was fairly easy to get an appointment. Over the years, however, Alan became more difficult to deal with. Several years ago he changed his scheduling guidelines without informing existing clients. As a result we had to file an extension for 2015 using another accountant. Alan eventually did our return, I accidently overpaid him by a couple of hundred dollars. His comment, oh well, we'll just apply it to next year's return. In April 2016, I suffered a heart attack, was hospitalized, underwent surgery. Unfortunately for me this event interferred with my appt. with Alan . My "referring friend" cancelled for me. I had an appointment for March 14th 2017, or so, which I had to cancel due to illness. When I spoke to Julie, I expressed concern about getting another appointment. She told me not to worry, as he had pleanty of openings. I called the office at least 5 times to schedule another appt. Each time I was told Alan would call me back. Finally, on APRIL 5th, Alan informed me by email that he would no longer be able to keep us as clients as he had to allocate his valuable time to those who did not cancel appointments! He did agree to file an extension at no charge for Tax year 2016. For years I put up with Alan's moods and condescending attitude (toward women only?). He certainly has a right to cull clients, but why wait until the deadline was upon us? I adore Reid and feel he has given us excellent advice.
