The station opened in 1892, when the Metropolitan Railway extended its line north to Aylesbury. From 1899 it was on the main line of the Great Central Railway, which ran north from Aylesbury to Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester.
The line beyond Aylesbury closed in 1966; the station was then served by British Rail services until franchised to Chiltern Railways in 1996. It now has a regular daytime service every 30 minutes to London Marylebone and north to Aylesbury Vale Parkway, with additional services at peak times.
The station retains its attractive original traditional brick main station building on the London bound platform, with traditional platform awnings. This has a ticket office, toilets, and a small coffee shop. There's a taxi office adjacent and a very large car park and also bicycle racks. The Aylesbury bound platform has a small basic shelter.
Both platforms have step-free access, but that for the Aylesbury platform involves a long detour, via the road bridge, from the main building.
