After a heavy night I took my friend here for brunch. On the outside it looks closed. Walking up the stairs exposes a open kitchen and large seating area with cacti everywhere and a cool kat clock over looking the place. The service was enjoyable from start to finish..90 percent of staff including the chef looked genuinely happy to be working there dancing to the music smiling as they cooked and served. It gave it a buzz! The menu consists of well..a American diner..from the special board I chose the maple pecan nut shake and the Benny crab cakes.. my friend had the spinach and poached eggs dish with fresh mint tea. The Shake was huge and yummy and while I waited for my food I kept seeing indulgent stacks of pancakes being whisked away. My poached eggs were oozy and perfect and the crab cakes.. well very crabby! And rich..to break it up there was water melon on the side which refreshed the palette. My friend really enjoyed hers too. I really want to come back here :( please extend your opening times!!

This was my second visit to the store as I said, firstly when I called in, just after it was opened I was pleased with the service and satisifed with my gluten free sandwich, albeit the food quality wasn't fantastic it was okay, just okay. The bread used I am told is from a bakery, although it is typical prepacked gluten free bread when they do have it in. This is pretty much an average local cafe, not a typicla restauraunt, with metal tables and quite cheap feelings around it, such as the menu simply just being laminated paper, and the salt and pepper pots etc being on a cental table rather than on each and every table, you order at the counter also. My second visit, I ordered a jacket potato with tuna crunch and cheese, of course with salt, pepper and butter and I was quite upset with the quality, the quantity of the toppings was very poor, and even the quality of them was as well, my potato just tasted bland, it was dry and I had to leave some of it because of that, which was a shame because I was hungry and I hate seeing food go to waste, but because of the awful, dry taste I just couldn't stomach it. My friend ordered a bacon and egg sandwich after being told they were out of turkey, and the only chicken they had was Teryaki Chicken, which didn't look very nice, even the waitress had to look at it twice to be able to work out what it is, it simply looked thick and disgusting. My friend later went on to complain about the quality of both her bacon and the eggs, and mentioned the only good thing was the bread, of course this is expected coming from a bakery, but surely there is no point having good bread without good fillings too? The overall service wasn't fantastic either, and the food was quite cheap but sadly due to the overall feel inside, for example the floor level is uneven and slight cheapness in the decor in some areas (albeit in some they have made it look nice on a budget), while also considering the poor standard of food, I sadly feel Substation lacks any feel of originality, with the name being unoriginal and taking off something else and the food standing out but for all the wrong reasons, hence deserving a single one star rating. UPDATE: After this visit, I decided to come back again to try them out again, giving Substation another chance having an issue in the past with food quality, and sadly I was once again upset with the quality of my food. I ordered a jacket potato with tuna crunch and cheese filling, and I found the quality of it all to be quite poor, with a very low amount of toppings on my potato, which in all tasted really dry and a little hard, and it really wasn't too enjoyable which was a real shame.

I was having trouble choosing as the waitress brought the breakfast AND the lunch menus so was torn between things like English breakfast and eggs benny, or the burgers and salads etc. In the end I asked the waitress and she recommended the fish finger sandwich if I was looking for something filling. It was incredible- the fish was incredibly fresh from the market and battered. The bun was light, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It came with a potato salad and a side salad with Dijon mustard dressing. Great choice and just what I needed. It cost me £11.30 for that and a chamomile tea, not particularly cheap but worth it. The service was excellent and the girl was very chatty as this is such a small community. In the evenings this place turns into more of a fine dining restaurant- I've seen pictures on the Internet and the food looks really nice so I'll have to come back for a meal sometime. The interior is quite simple cafe style with wooden tables, it doesn't hold that many so I can imagine it would get pretty full! It was certainly filling up when I left at lunchtime.

We were impressed with the teas and coffees too. The interior was clean, modern and well lit. Definitely a lovely spot for weekend brunch or tea and cake in the afternoons!

It's a pretty unassuming location, on a busy main road and nearly opposite a big supermarket but as soon as you step inside the Northern Crafthouse you could be in any part of the Northern Quarter. It's got that reclaimed/vintage vibe going with lots of exposed brickwork and wood - and some rather fabulous chairs which looked like old school chairs recovered in leather. The menu isn't going to win any healthy eating awards - burgers, tacos, hot dogs and burritos make up the majority. There's also a brunch menu which is served at the start of the day. Sparky went for the BBQ beef burger, I opted for the cajun chicken burger. Each came on an enamel plate with a gingham piece of grease proof paper - again, very on-trend for the NQ! We really enjoyed our food, although my burger was a little bit on the salty side. We also polished off a bowl of fries. The crowd was fairly mixed, ranging from 20 somethings out to cure a hangover through to families with children. There was a really nice vibe to the place and it makes a really welcome addition to this part of north Manchester, showing that Prestwich isn't the only place with cool hangouts!
