Very authentic! Tried the Spring Roll Dosa (I was instructed to order one here by a fellow lover of Indian cuisine) and it was very different and delicious with accompanying sauces. The Baignan was nice and smoky. The paneer dish I ordered was unexpectedly sweet. I was a little underwhelmed by the curries, mainly because my spice level 8 was not spicy at all! But the naan was FANTASTIC! Interior was nothing spectacular, much like retired family-style buffet - they do have a buffet BTW - and the service was friendly. Prices are quite good. There is a distinct familiarity with Amma's Kitchen's food. The podi-idli is the unsung hero of the appetizer section. Uthappams and dosas are classic. The lunch buffet has a large variety of dishes that change often. Neither the quality of food, nor the service has changed despite the ownership changing several hands in the last several years. The Rating I gave 2 is for the manager, I went for a buffet and he charged us extra 7 dollars saying, this is for an extra dosa, each person gets only 1 dosa but in real we had only one dosa per head. On asking why it's charged he dint give proper explanation and said the waiter has asked me to charge you extra. On asking call the waiter, he returned the extra amount by cash. Food: I would really give 4 star for the food it is and not for the ambience and environment. They got very good vegetarian food and will like it for sure. The sunday lunch buffet was packed. So many families, and even though the thermostat was set to 70 it felt like it was 80. Beside being so hot though, the food was really tasty with some south indian staples that are more rare in cincinnati. For the unaccostumed, south indian food is usually all vegetarian and some dishes are named differently like saag paneer is palak paneer. There was vada(lentil donuts), ildi (rice cakes), sambar (lentil soup), dum biriyani (veggie fried rice), and channa masala to name some of my favorites. They also had chat which is a cold salad of various veggies, noodles, and maybe apples. It is very refreshing and tastes great with all the chutneys that are available. They also have quite a few desserts like gulab jamun (sweet fried dough balls), paak (sugar/butter bars), Payasam (sweet vermicelli), raita (yogurt rice), and rice pudding. Only thing missing is my favorite kulfi! Each buffet comes with one dosa, that is much smaller then the one you buy normally, but they are freshly made and brought to your table. Boy, what a bonehead I am: Just a few weeks ago, I was lamenting in a review of Udupi Palace, an excellent Chicago restaurant serving vegetarian Southern Indian cuisine, that it'd be a long time before I'd get to have such food again, because Cincinnati ain't got it. But I'd forgotten about Amma's Kitchen in Roselawn, which I'd heard about a couple of years ago but which had slipped off our radar screens. Unfortunately, the essence of my thought about Udupi Palace is still valid: After a single visit to Amma's Sunday buffet, I think I can still say that it may be a long time that I get to have such food as I had at Udupi in Chicago. By comparison, Amma's was a disappointment, or at least a mixed bag. Some of the stuff on the buffet was terrific, e.g., the sambar and a spincah-mushroom dish. But too many other items were a bit bland, especially the green and mint chutneys, and some of the food seemed a little warmed-over. The medhu vada was a little dried-out. The naan was lukewarm, and flaccid in texture. On this day, at least, service was pretty poor. On our arrival, a very pleasant lady showed us to our booth and left us with a pitcher of ice water. But after that, we were pretty much on our own. Although a sign on the buffet said that you could ask for a complimentary dosa to be brought to your table, we never were able to get anyone's attention. Meanwhile, we could see a couple of employees standing around across the restaurant, not doing much of anything most of the time. Getting the check was a chore. Prices are a little high, at $11 for a vegetarian buffet. (The Northern Indian places around town, which all offer plenty of meat, usually charge only $8 to $10.) For vegetarians, construe this as a higher rating: In a town like Cinci, it qualifies as a veritable vegetarian smorgasbord. And for anybody except cave-folks who have to have slabs of flesh with every single meal in their lives, the number of the selections on the buffet is impressive. (The restaurant even offers a vegan buffet on Wednesdays.) I want to get back to Amma's, but this first experience dampened my excitement. In any event, take this review with a grain of salt, if not the whole shaker, b/c the Indian reviewers here seem to appreciate Amma's and the restaurant does a healthy trade with the local Indian community. read more

I love that there's a vegetarian Indian restaurant in Cincinnati. And, even better, they have VEGAN WEDNESDAYS! I went today with a friend for the lunch buffet and there were so many delicious vegan dishes! My favorite was probably the vegetable korma made with coconut milk instead of cream. The chana masala was good too and I was really surprised by a savory cream of wheat dish that was awesome (I got seconds of that one). You also get your choice of fresh made dosa as a part of the buffet and that was pretty darn good (get it spicy). There was only one yellow green bean dish that didn't do it for me, but I tried almost everything, so that's not bad at all. Their southern Indian food is well-prepared and they offer a diverse selection of vegetarian options. We have been here a few times, and always try something different. Amm's Kitchen literally means Mother's Kitchen and that is what it is! I was here for my dinner and it was fabulous experience. They are very authentic about their south indian dishes. Food is spicy but just like it would have been in a south indian home. I was very happy to find an Indian place which does not have altered the taste of their food so much that it almost tastes like the chef has mouth ulcers and he can't tolerate the real spicy food. YES! An Indian restaurant that specializes in vegetarian cuisine (South Indian cuisine, to be exact)! I cannot speak on its authenticity, but to me it is delicious. I go for the lunch buffet and I typically get a little bit of everything. The variety is great as is the food quality; they've got a great selection of main dishes and sides as well as salads and sweets. The restaurant itself is clean and the staff are very friendly. If you do get the buffet, ask for a complimentary dosa! It's a thin crepe made from lentil batter, stuffed with potato.. so good. A friend of mine has been raving about Amma's for months now, specifically the Wednesday lunch buffet. Amma's, as I'm sure you know, is always vegetarian, but on Wednesday they go full Vegan. While I do love my veggies, I also want some protein, so my excitement was a little tempered by the knowledge that there would be NO animal products for me to rebuild my muscles on (muscles I wish I had :'(. Hopefully, I thought, they would use soy milk, tofu, nuts, etc. to add some polypeptides to the meal. Regardless, there's a given excitement I get when trying anything new, and especially when going out to eat at a place that was named one of the 10 best restaurants in the city by Cincinnati Magazine. It's a little out of the way, and the very unassuming location between a bank and a gas station sets a very low bar for the aesthetics. Inside, it's pretty well lit, with plenty of seating, and the buffet set up is in the back of the room in a little L shape. When we first arrived at about 1 I was surprised at how many people there were, the buffet was wrapped, and a number of items were emptied out on first pass. They did have a pretty good assortment though - two types of lentil soup (the one I tried had a deep brown color and a really great spice to it) plain brown rice, brown rice flavored with tomatoes and onions (making it pink), puffed whole wheat bread, steam riced cakes, eggplant curry, spinach and coconut milk uhh sautee, potatoes and garden vegetables curry, beets with diced onions and spices, deepfried lentil "donuts", stir-fried cauliflower in szechuan sauce. and then a little spread of cold condiments and "salad veggies" - cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, jalapenos, carrots, and the typical chutney and spreads (including a coconut milk rakhita sauce that was pretty impressive considering there was no yogurt). Additionally they offered a single dosa fresh made for every customer, spicy or regular. Everything had a little placard to explain what it contained, including flags for allergens. I don't have any food allergies, and very few dietary concerns, but I can really appreciate the level of concern they're showing to customers who do. The only problem I had? Nothing was really that amazing to me! Everything tasted good, literally everything. The soup, the flavored rice, the curries, the spinach sautee (god I do love me some spinach), nothing tasted bad. But nothing blew me away. Maybe it's because this was the buffet, but everything was coming out fresh and hot regularly, maybe their individual plates are closer to what I would enjoy... I would say that the spicy dosa was better than anything else they had on the buffet. But outside of that I didn't have a single bite that made me think "this is worth driving 20 minutes for," let alone "this is one of the best restaurants in the city!" The price was reasonable ($9/person), the service was... okay (one guy was running the whole front of the house, so while he was very friendly and trying hard there were issues with dishes and empty drinks), the food was refreshed quickly and warm, the to-order dosa came out fast, and it's definitely a unique dining option (don't see a lot of vegan buffets!). I really do respect the fact they're conscious of the dietary restrictions of their customers, and they manage to make some pretty tasty food despite those limitations. But all of that said... I'm not nearly as impressed as everyone else. I might have to try ordering off the menu, give this a re-evaluation. read more

The server was great about answering questions and making recommendations. We started with the vegetable cutlet, which was tasty and came with a few different dipping options. We split two entrees -- aloo gobhi and the special vegetable curry. Both were delicious and perfect portions for leftovers. "Medium heat" was accurate. Before our first trip to Amma's, we debated. Two family members didn't like it; ratings of Cincy's Indian restaurants put it in the top 10. Luckily the ratings were spot on. Amma's is not fancy but it is simply good. Our service was friendly and helpful. We shared the dinner special for 2, which was a great way to try some new things. We liked everything and loved the paneer butter masala and the dosas. The paneer was "lick the bowl good" according to my husband! Total was about $34 for enough food to feed at least three adults. There are many other items on the menu I'd like to try on another visit. Tip: if it is cold outside, try not to sit near the front door as there is a draft every time it opens. read more
