I cannot say enough wonderful things about Amrit! She guided me through my entire feeding journey with my second baby without any judgement. More importantly, she was compassionate and practical which can be VERY hard to find in the lactation world. She attentively asked me my goals for feeding this time around and then helped me make a game-plan at each step. Ultimately, I was unable/chose to stop nursing and pumping. While I personally felt so disappointed in myself for that, Amrit was nothing but supporting and loving. She supported me in any decision I made to keep my baby happy and fed and for that i'm forever grateful. She also helped me figure out how to get on a pumping schedule (when I needed to) and eventually how to wean without getting mastitis. Although my feeding journey eventually did not include breastfeeding, I'm so so happy I found Amrit to help me navigate all the things that come along with feeding a newborn. I felt like I was always in wonderful and capable hands and would recommend her to every new mom who needs some support. Breastfeeding is HARD and Amrit never made me feel guilty or bad. She simply supported me and helped me find something that worked for me and my family. Thank you again Amrit for all of your love and support with baby Ryan! read more

I owe my entire breastfeeding relationship to Amrit! I nursed my oldest for 2.5 years and needed virtually no help. Things were much different once I had my son. She taught me so much and I could NOT have learned the things I did had I not met with her! She was able to help me latch my son on in the office and we have been thriving since our visit! Ahe was told she can not accept patients with my insurance, and yet, she saw us anyway!!!! I am so grateful and genuinely believe we would have failed without her help and over 40 years of experience! She is unable to see other women with my insurance (I have state funded mediCal) unless they are a Bayside patient. However, if you have private insurance you can contact Bayside in Berkeley and make an appt. There's a $37.50 copay for the visit. read more
I don't want to oversell Amrit, but she is magic. I exclusively pumped for my first so after I had my second baby, I got out all the old pumping stuff and expected it to be easy. God quickly punished me for my hubris. I had multiple episodes of severely clogged ducts, milk blebs, and non-healing shallow ulcers on my boobs - all of which contributed to multiple crying episodes and a general desire to give up. I also couldn't get an appointment with Kaiser lactation and the private lactation consultants that I initially contacted were booked weeks out in advance. I felt like a boob failure and completely alone. In one final desperate attempt, I looked outside my immediate area and contacted Amrit. She responded back right away and we made an appointment the next day and these ulcers - these ulcers I have had for two weeks and that I tried every remedy I could find online - started to heal within 2 days. Magic. Then my exclusively breastmilk fed baby developed constipation. Like large toddler sized turfs. My pediatrician was stumped. She went a referral to pediatric gi who also didn't have an answer. Amrit listened to my entire story, diagnosed my child with a high palate and difficulty eating and provided an immediate solution. Two days later, she was eating 1 ounce more each meal and having normal poops again. Magic. Amrit feels like my booby fairy godmother and I wish I discovered her earlier. I feel more empowered as a mother by her vast wisdom and gentle, warm demeanor. She's magic. read more

Amrit was an incredible support throughout my breastfeeding journey! I honestly don't know that I would have continued without her. From our first meeting I felt like she understood exactly what my baby and I needed and was able to give relevant advice and suggestions that worked (I had talked to two lactation specialists while in the hospital and found them pretty unhelpful). I started working with her when my baby was less than a week old and she helped me navigate a pretty serious over supply problem as well as a difficult weaning process when my migraines started to get bad again and I had to stop breastfeeding in order to go back on my medications. She was nonjudgmental and gave me counsel based on what my family needed in the moment. She is kind, caring and also did an amazing job of including my partner in the process. read more

Amrit was extremely supportive in helping me launch my breastfeeding journey! Not only does she give practical, easy-to-implement tools but she has the most wonderful loving and nurturing demeanor, sense of humor, and caring heart! My daughter had a tongue and lip tie which she was able to determine with an exam, one which she involved me in every step of the way. She then recommended a pediatric dentist who performed a revision which immediately stopped the nipple pain I experienced beforehand. I have been exclusively breastfeeding for 3 months and I owe Amrit so much credit. Thank you!!! So much love for Amrit. read more

I'm so grateful that I got to work with Amrit on my breastfeeding journey. She was compassionate and practical. She supported and believed me when I described the struggles I was experiencing. She also helped us develop a realistic plan around nursing, pumping, and supplementing with formula. I'm relieved that she didn't make me feel badly when primarily breastfeeding was no longer the goal. She also gave us helpful information around our baby's growth, development, and what to expect in the months ahead. I wish I had worked with her sooner, but I'm glad that she helped us get to a place where our baby is plumping up and doing great. read more

If you are having any breastfeeding issues, look no further. I saw lactation consultants (two) while in the hospital post-partum, and thought seeing an additional person was probably unnecessary--I've never been more wrong. Amrit is incredibly knowledgeable, coming to her consultancy with decades of birth experience, and has a forthright, caring bedside manner. She helped me with a SNS (supplemental nursing system) and a tongue release (frenectomy), recommending multiple providers until we found the right fit (I loved novato pediatric dentistry fwiw). I'm so grateful for her and can't recommend her services highly enough. read more

A life saver !!! I'm now mother of two. I had a lot of problems with my first daughter. Therefore, I was very afraid to breastfeed my second daughter. I had a prenatal consultation with Amrit. She listened to me and gave us a lot emotional support and practical advice that made me feel more empowered when my second daughter was born. After the delivery, Amrit helped us with the latch through video conference. I'm soo happy that she was offering on-line consultation during the cv-19 pandemic. She saw how I was breastfeeding and explained me what to change to get a pain-free latch. And it works. After the online consultation, she continued guiding us via SMS and recorded videos. She was amazing. I'm now enjoy a beautiful experience with my baby thanks to her. I know that sometimes video conference can be not as optimal. But the experience and patience that Amrit has, made her an amazing online lactation consultant. read more

If you are having any problems breastfeeding pick up the phone and call Amrit. Not to be dramatic, but she saved me and my baby. I was hesitant to switch lactation specialists, but couldn't be happier. Amrit is knowledgeable, kind, straightforward, passionate and caring. Highly highly recommend! I had seen a lactation specialist at the hospital when my baby was born and thought we had the hang of things but my baby wasn't gaining weight and I fact kept losing it. I saw a specialist at my doctor's office to help decipher what could be the problem, but she didn't have the answer. It wasn't a tongue tie or anything obvious so she told us to just keep feeding on demand and start power pumping. After a couple weeks the weight still didn't add up, my supply was down and my stress was through the roof. Although hesitant to call someone knew, Amrit's name came up in an online search so I called her immediately. We chatted about the first 6 weeks of my baby's life and our breastfeeding journey and she was over the next day to help. Turns out my baby's latch was too shallow and I was too tense so she wasn't getting the proper amounts of milk. She taught me the proper techniques and patience. Fast forward a month and my baby is thriving! Her weight is up, her whole demeanor is positive and she is the smiliest, happiest baby. My supply is also up and able to support her! No more witching hours at night because she is well fed throughout the day and we are able to leave the house without the fear that she will lose it over food. read more

I cannot begin to say enough good things about Amrit who helped me so much after the birth of my first child. She not only took away any and all hang ups I had with supplementing but she eventually got my supply to match my baby's demands. It only took a couple weeks and I'm still in a great place 7 months later. Amrit is incredibly warm and amazing. I would recommend her over and over again and wish I could just spend time with her. I got in contact with Amrit prior to having my second baby a few weeks ago and from that time on she ensured that I felt supported and was equipped on the journey of feeding my new baby. She also made sure to reiterate to not put too much pressure on myself and that there would always be a plan that would work. She went over and above (with time, effort, and consistent contact) to ensure that I got the help and guidance me and baby needed and truly made us feel cared for. I am extremely grateful for Amrit and highly recommend her for anyone searching for guidance and support in this area of postpartum. Thanks again, Amrit! read more

Amrit is incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to babies. She is the only consultant I worked with (among many) who really got in it with us, and said the things that were hard but necessary for me to turn around some really difficult challenges and eventually thrive. She is well versed in all the standard theories. She is also able to go way out of the box, when necessary. It is clear her knowledge is deep and rooted in years of experience. Amrit is amazing. We had a preemie who had feeding issues from the start. She didn't transfer much while breastfeeding and would on and off refuse bottles which was very concerning to us. We saw our pediatrician, feeding specialists at UCSF and other lactation consultants before Amrit. Most advice centered around dairy intolerance and moving to hypoallergenic formulas. We saw other celebrated lactation consultants but we were glad to find Amrit. She spent time on the phone with us, did a thorough evaluation in person and offered us most practical advice so our baby begins to take bottles as a first step. She recommended feeding therapists as well as getting baby's oral ties addressed. We were very hesitant but eventually it helped solve our baby's feeding issues. Glad we listened to Amrit and appreciated her being direct and offering sane advice and not just trying to get more business out of us. We now have a 1+ year old who is still breastfeeding and gave up bottles many months ago. It's really good she took to breastfeeding as it's already improved her palate and oral structure. Would highly recommend Amrit. read more

I gave birth to my daughter on a Friday and the hospital sent us home the very next afternoon. I was determined to establish a breastfeeding relationship with my daughter yet ,As a first time mother ... I knew absolutely nothing about how to do it. Just stick her on the boob and let nature run its course right ? WRONG. After only 24 hours of feeding, my nipples were blistered cracked and painful. The nurse at the hospital had mentioned my daughter had a lip tie and tongue tie. I thought that diagnosis meant either surgery for my little one or giving up on breastfeeding entirely. However I wasn't about to give up. In comes Amrit to the rescue. She visited our home and instantly I felt comforted and relieved by just her presence . She was so informative and worked with us to practice essential breastfeeding skills. She Assessed my breasts and my daughter to diagnose a catered feeding plan for us and even gave us feeding syringes . By finger feeding we were able to treat her mild jaundice, familiarize her with a proper latch and ensure shes being fed. A week later my daughter's skin is rosey, we are breastfeeding exclusively, she's gaining weight, and I'm pain-free. Her guidance has been priceless in my journey in being a mother. even as I write this I'm teary-eyed in gratitude . I am so grateful for her support and encourage all mothers in the area who need support to call on her without a shadow of a doubt. Don't give up !!!!! You got this mommas! read more

My friends advised me pre-baby: if you have any issues with breast-feeding don't hesitate in getting a lactation consultant. Specifically, don't mess around trekking the baby to the hospital for the "free" lactation support. Get someone to come to your home. The money is well worth it. So on day 3 at home with the baby (5 days old overall) I met with Amrit, who came highly recommended by friends. While my baby liked to feed, she didn't have a deep latch which caused searing pain. My milk was also starting to come in which was generally uncomfortable. 3 days home I was still mainly lying in bed. Amrit totally went with the flow. She was very comfortable to be around but also wasn't shy about telling it like it was. She dropped a lot of knowledge both about what I was currently experiencing but also about what was to come. After the two hour visit she was also available via phone and text. Officially for a week but I'm pretty sure she'd be willing to answer a question here or there outside of that window :) Fast forward - we just had baby's two week check up and she has already gained a pound! Lots of kudos for her good (pain free) eating habits. I'm so happy I saw Amrit early and that I'm I didn't just try to muscle through the pain. Highly recommend a well seasoned, personable lactation consultant like Amrit. Definitely well worth the cost. And if you have a work sponsored FSA, Amrit was very good about asking and providing the paperwork. read more

When having a baby you know you need an Obgyn (and L&D nurses) to deal with the gynecological related parts and you know you need a pediatrician for your child's general health, but what about your breasts that are feeding your child? You need Amrit. Trust me you do. While you see a lactation consultant in the hospital it's somewhat silly because your milk hasn't come in. Sure they can help you latch and maybe get a feel for how to hold your baby, but it's a whole different ball game when you have milk and your baby's GI tract is "waking up." Amrit rescued me as my baby and I were having increasingly more fussy sessions when feeding. What made me call her was I thought my baby was having silent reflux because she'd cry as if in pain, and was having trouble sleeping. I was told by my pediatrician that she's just fussy, but I was sure there was some digestive issue that was causing her to wake up. I described what was going on to Amrit and she knew exactly what to do. She said I had an oversupply of milk, with an overactive letdown which was creating all sorts of issues compounded by my baby's high palate preventing good suction. Amrit spent close to 3 hours with me illuminating the issues for me - showing me the best techniques for hand expression, showing me how to use my bottles to have less burping and nipple/sucking confusion, and assessing my breast pump fit and pumping habits. With her help I reduced my milk supply in 3 days - as she predicted, I feel I reduced it too much. Now that I am back up closer to my oversupply we are starting to see those issues I had before reappear. Fortunately, Amrit gave me the techniques to help manage my supply as I continue on this journey. Someone else wrote that this was the best "baby money" they spent. I couldn't agree more. I am sure I will call on her again to help me with plugged ducts and to just get a general refresher on good habits. My only wish wash that I had called her at 3 weeks post partum when my baby's symptoms started rather than waiting until week 5 to see her. read more

I cannot say enough about how much of an impact Amrit had on our lives. We reached out to her one week after giving birth to our baby girl. We had a scare during her first pediatrician's appointment where they told us that her weight dropped significantly and put us on a triple feeding schedule: breastfeeding with a nipple shield, then feeding our baby with a syringe while mama pumps. This was on a 2 hour feeding schedule, so not only were we feeling emotionally and mentally drained but we were physically exhausted (more than what is expected with first time parents). We contacted Amrit on Yelp feeling desperate for a second opinion and she immediately responded and called us for a 20 minute consultation. That alone was more helpful than any of the advice we received previously. She was the first person to ask me about my delivery. When she heard that I had lost a lot of blood during childbirth, she knew why I was suffering from low milk supply. The next day she came to our home and spent 3 hours with us working on everything from latching, paced bottle feeding, and diet for mama to get my iron levels up and increase my milk supply. This was the first time my baby latched without a nipple shield and no pain. We then worked with Amrit through our insurance for the next couple of weeks. She was always available over text and by phone and we saw her in person a few times at her office. Within 2 weeks of working with her we were able to fully transition into exclusively breastfeeding (I did not have to supplement with formula anymore since my milk supply went up) and baby has fully gained back her birth weight and then some. Most importantly Amrit worked with us with realistic goals and expectations. Her approach kept both baby AND parents in mind and we are so so thankful to have met her and worked with her. If you have any issues with breastfeeding - especially in the early weeks - go see Amrit! We know she will change your lives like she did ours. read more

Amrit has been incredible in helping me navigate nursing not only with my first son, but my second as well. It's amazing how much I had forgotten but she was also quick to note that I'm also working with a new and different baby. She helped get me through the tough early days, get a jump start on pumping and storing and even developed a plan for when I went back to work. There's no way I would have nursed my son until he was eight mos without her. Her years of experience are invaluable and I'd highly recommend her for any mom hoping to successfully nurse. read more

Amrit helped me to gain confidence in my mothering and to connect more with my baby. I sought her services after the birth of my second daughter after experiencing a tremendous amount of struggle breast-feeding my first daughter who is now 2 and a half. Amrit helped me to relax and not bring my fears from my past experience into the experience with breast-feeding my new baby. Amrit comes with an incredibly broad base of knowledge about not only breast feeding but about each stage of infant development and how this impacts breast-feeding. She helped to calm my anxiety by preparing me for periods of difficulty (growth spurts, developmental shifts in my baby) and giving me the tools I'd need to navigate these challenges. She spent the time with me to help me learn how to interpret my baby's cues and to trust myself and my baby. Amrit made herself available to answer all of my questions no matter how big or small. She made a significant difference for me in helping me to not feel pain while breastfeeding, helping me have a healthy milk supply and making sure my baby got what she needed to gain weight and thrive! I can not recommend her more highly. read more

Amrit is a master lactation consultant. Her 40+ years of experience and wealth of knowledge has helped me navigate through breastfeeding challenges with 2 kids -- my daughter 4 years ago, and now my son, during this time of Covid-19. Even via FaceTime, Amrit was able to spot the problems with my baby's latch, diagnose my breast infection, and provide emotional support through all of the difficulties that came up with breastfeeding. She goes above and beyond by passing on her cell phone number and responding to messages promptly. And when she didn't hear an update from me, she reached out to check in and see how things were going. She listens carefully, considers every detail of both mother and baby wellness. She is a true expert and I feel so fortunate that I had her to help me through the tears and joys of my breastfeeding journeys. I highly recommend reaching out to Amrit for lactation help, especially during this challenging time of Covid-19. You will be in expert hands! read more

Amrit has great experience as a lactation consultant, and helped with getting my milk supply up. At the same time, she's what you might expect from a white woman doing lactation consulting in Berkeley under an Indian name. She is unapologetically pseudo-scientific and quite woo-woo. That would be fine and good, but she has some serious misunderstanding of basic scientific principals, and people not paying attention may be misled. So, if you're going to see Amrit, remember this: Change in mass = mass in - mass out. Specifically, if you want to calculate the amount of milk your baby is getting (mass in) from the change in weight (change in mass), you have to insure that mass out = 0 (Do not change the diaper after feeding!!!!!) read more

We were referred to Amrit through our pediatrician, Dr. Stevens after having met with three other lac consultants and not having success with latching. At this point my nipples were dying from the damage and I was tired of just trying things in the dark (literally we tried so many new techniques at 2am). When I went into Amrit's office her calm and confident demeanor instantly put me at ease. We were able to identify what was happening and create a plan. She even followed up with me to ensure the plan was going well and I was 100% confident on executing said plan. I left that appointment beaming for the first time in days because of her expertise. I found Amrit through a friend's referral and I can't say enough good things about her. Our initial two hour consultation started with her offering to rub my feet while I tell her about my breastfeeding problems and issues. Talk about a great start! She was very detailed about writing everything down so she could make sure to answer all of my questions and concerns. She showed me the basics of how to hand express as well as how to get a proper deep latch. I had my baby 5 weeks ago and have had nonstop issues with clogged/plugged milk ducts. They are super painful and I feel defeated every time I get one because it's hours upon days of extra work to help clear it. Amrit showed me how to use the tip of a needle to open up a blep so it can start to clear out. We also talked about how to manage the problem through daily massage and Epsom salt soaks. She left me a detailed summary sheet with specific instructions for all the things we discussed. Additionally, she made herself available via email, phone and text for the following week between the hours of 8a-8p. I ended up calling her in a panic one evening because I had developed another huge lump and was freaking out I would end up in the ER again. Amrit was knowledgeable and personable, super caring and encouraging. All new mamas should hire her to get them started on the right foot for breastfeeding success! read more

Amrit, is truly amazing. She is warm and caring and really knows her stuff. I saw her first at a home visit, on a Saturday, and she swooped in and got my daughter and I rockin' with breastfeeding. She took the time to answer all my questions, helped me with our latch, nursing chair set-up, checked all my pumping gear, weighed my daughter both before and after a feeding to see what her intake was. It was worth every penny. Luckily, I found out about Amrit early. Breastfeeding is a learned skill and I wish all women would have an Amrit, even those who don't get cracked bleeding nipples. If you aren't sure, see her anyway, I promise you won't be disappointed. I also saw Amrit at her Oakland Bayside office. The staff there was friendly and helpful! read more

The success of our breastfeeding journey is single handily a result of the service and support amrit provided to our family Without going into a lot of detail, nursing was a significant challenge due to an emergency c-section, time in NICU, milk not coming in, inability to latch, engorgement, etc. etc. etc. Amrit came the day we were all discharged and provided both the expertise and shoulder to cry on I was in desperate need for. She put together a detailed plan for our family that was easy to understand. Amrit made herself available - in person and on phone - when I needed her and that was a lot! I am glad to say that what I thought would be a non-existent nursing relationship with my little one ended up being a YEAR long relationship If you are even questioning your nursing relationship, do yourself a favor and call Amrit now. I had nothing but problems from the beginning with breastfeeding my baby. It started with a bad latch in the hospital and spiraled downward from there. I spoke with 3 other lactation consultants before and finally found Amrit based off a reference from a friend. And boy, am I glad I did!! Amrit is amazing!!! I contacted her and she was able to meet with me right away. Considering what I had went through and what I was going through, Amrit was extremely empathetic towards my breastfeeding issues and the most knowledgable consultant on all of the issues I was facing. From my baby having a posterior tongue tie and a high pallet causing latching issues, to systemic candida and nipple trauma. Amrit was able to give me a concise action plan for each stage that we worked through. She created a comfortable environment for my baby and I when we met with her. It can be an extremely stressful time for a new mother and Amrit lets you know that what you are facing is normal because each person's experience is different. Amrit used a holistic approach for each of the stages that her and I worked through. This woman is worth her weight in gold! I would highly recommend her services for any mommies out there having breastfeeding issues. She is genuinely concerned about your health, breastfeeding issues and allows for realistic expectations based on your experience. While I felt pressured by other lactation consultants to "push on" and "just work through it" my body wasn't able to fight off the infections I was dealing with. Amrit did everything in her power to get me healthy and feed my baby breastmilk. Unfortunately, due to poor, unorganized and antiquated health care at the hospital where I was being treated for my infections, I had to quit breastfeeding and pumping all together. Amrit was completely supportive of this decision and created a thoughtful action plan to get me healthy again so I could tend to my baby without feeling totally exhausted both mentally and physically. I truly cannot say enough good things about Amrit. She is fantastic at what she does and she is the only way I made it through the trials and tribulations of my first few weeks with a newborn. read more

As new parents, it's really hard to know what advice and actions take - especially when just 2-4 weeks out of the hospital and overwhelmed and under-slept. We really wanted to breastfeed our newborn, but were having difficulties on multiple fronts: he was recovering from a tongue tie and my milk came in a little late, and being a total novice despite taking some lactation classes ahead of time. Also, we were feeling a bit unsure of our path forward after receiving some inconsistent lactation direction from the hospital staff. Concerned we would lose the window of time to secure my milk supply and our baby's willingness to breast feed, we knew timing was important so we reached out to Amrit. Luckily for us, she just restarted her in home visits. She was generous with her time and helped us get set up and acclimated in our own home with a place to feed our baby more comfortably, but most importantly she thoroughly listened and crafted us a schedule and plan that had us breastfeeding, pumping, and bottle feeding in order to get his weight up and establish my milk supply. We followed the plan closely and saw results - our baby gained over a full pound by his 5th week "birthday" and we had such continued success, we were able to transition to fully breastfeeding with some top-off bottle feeding within about 3 weeks. Our little is still working up his stamina, but we're sure we'll get to 100% at the breast when the time comes. Thanks goodness for Amrit! If you have any concerns about your breastfeeding journey, don't hesitate to contact her - she has a number of ways to provide support and has so much knowledge; I have no doubt she'll help you reach your lactation goals. read more

I recently delivered my adorable baby girl in November of 2013, but like any new mom, had NO IDEA how to breastfeed. Thankfully I was given a recommendation and referral to see the wonderful Amrit Khalsa lactation specialist, by my amazing midwife Ellie Griffinger CNM. I had severe engorgement and was seen by two other lactation specialists in the hospital, both of which were unable to help me obtain a good latch or really address the engorgement (which was actually not even acknowledged by them). Amrit visited me at the hospital, because my midwife was very concerned about the breastfeeding not being very successful and my frustration and difficulty with it, along with the stress of a jaundiced newborn. She also had recognized how severely engorged I was the need to address it before it turned into mastitis When Amrit came to see me, her professional, caring, pleasant and calming demeanor automatically put me at ease and helped me to feel more confident in feeding my child. She educated me on how to decompress the engorgement and a few positions that worked well for me and my baby. I have continued to work with her now after 6 weeks, as I continue to have extremely sensitive over-producing breasts. She has guided me through various types of feeding methods and herbal supplementation so as not to reduce my milk too far, because I will be returning to work in February and will need to start storing my milk. We have also thus far, successfully managed to avoid mastitis (which really is a miracle given my milk production) and severely sore or cracked nipples. She has been incredibly receptive to my needs, answering many text messages and taking a few calls later in the evening addressing all of my concerns and breast feeding questions. She is one of the most compassionate and caring providers I have ever met, along with years of experience to support her. I have had her come to my home and have gone to her office (she works with Bayside Medical Group). I have gone from a frustrated mom to an extremely happy mommy and baby that is a breastfeeding pro and has gained almost a pound a week, thanks to Amrit! read more

I highly recommend Amrit as a lactation consultant. She brings with her years of experience and she is able to convey her knowledge in a wonderfully gentle yet direct way. She helped us establish nursing with both of our boys. Amrit's insight and advice were instrumental to my being able to nurse so successfully. Not only was she there through the beginning, but also later on to gauge the optimal time to introduce a bottle (being able to go out for more than a couple of hours and know I wouldn't come home to a hungry baby was great). With the birth of a new baby we all need help and the support that Amrit gives is absolutely the best. read more

We are social animals, and we developed by passing on not only our genes, but our knowledge. And sadly, the generational link has been broken for the knowledge of breastfeeding in America. Enter the lactation consultant. Amrit helped my first baby (a preemie) with his latch. With my second child, she consulted on the fit and model of my pump. With her help, I didn't have to give up breastfeeding because of the pain it caused me. With her help, my raw, sore nipples healed, and my supply was not only maintained, but increased. A million thanks are not enough for Amrit and Bayside Medical. read more

Amrit was both our home birth midwife as well as a lactation consultant for us during our little one's early stay in the ICU. Simon was diagnosed at 4 months old with a serious heart condition and we wanted to keep him on breast milk for as long as we could to help strengthen his immune system. Amrit is an incredible deep well of knowledge. She was so willing to work with us, even after Simon stopped nursing, with keeping my milk supply up. Her years of experience with Mama's and babies is incredible AND the fact that she went on to get her lactation consultant's credential only means that besides years and years of hands on experience she now also has the most current and up to date info on how to help Moms and babes. read more

Choosing a pediatrician for your first child can be a daunting task. We discovered Bayside Medical group by asking friends and family who they used and loved or who they had heard good things about and Bayside's practice was named by several of our trusted people. We've been taking our son to Bayside since he was just 5 days old and he's been seen by every doctor in this practice. They are all fantastic. Knowledgeable, friendly, supportive, thoughtful and gentle. The entire medical and reception staff is warm and treat us, as parents, and our son respectfully. We actually look forward to going there! The icing on the cake of this practice is that they have a lactation consultant, Amrit Khalsa, as a part of their staff. If we could see Amrit once a week, we would. She is excited about what she does and has a wealth of knowledge. She provides us with not only her expertise but also a sense of confidence in the breastfeeding process. Amrit has apparently been doing this quite awhile and seems to have a solid intuition that pairs nicely with her expertise. I would highly recommend seeing Amrit for any kind of lactation support. Thank goodness she's affordable enough that we can see her as regularly as we need. read more

The first few weeks were so, so hard. Learning to breastfeed seemed more painful than labor itself. I cried every day for the first 3 weeks and almost gave up after every feeding. Knowing my baby was hungry and being terrified of feeding him made me feel so helpless and hurt. After seeing various LC's at the hospital and going in for a tongue tie evaluation, I felt like I had done everything I could. 5 weeks in, I finally called Amrit after a recommendation from my mom's coworker. Amrit responded quickly, came over to my house for a 2 hour consultation, and showered me with love and support. She held my hand, kissed my head, hugged me and listened to my story. Amrit showed me how to get a deep latch without using a shield. That first week after proved difficult as well. Baby and I were a mess and I almost gave up again! But somehow I kept on persevering and continued to follow Amrit's advice. My son is now 15 weeks, and although it's not perfect, we've definitely come a long way. I wouldn't have made it this far without the help of Amrit. Thank you Amrit! read more

Amrit is an amazing lactation consultant and a beautiful person! My daughter was born 6 weeks early and spent 3 weeks in the NICU. Although the lactation consultant in NICU was helpful, my daughter and I still had issues trying to breastfeed. Amrit was very helpful with helping my daughter and I successfully breastfeed which is to my understanding a bit more challenging with premature babies. Amrit established an intense pumping/latching routine for us and was always available to answer questions via phone or text. If she didn't hear from us she would touch base and encourage us to give her updates. She taught me how all aspects of my health can impact our breastfeeding. Amrit was also very supportive when I had other very serious issues with my daughter. I will never forget how wonderful and helpful Amrit was for me and my daughter during this crucial time in our lives. I highly recommend her. read more

Keeping one's head on straight while that center of your affection and purpose suffers, fails to latch, and loses weight in the first days of his or her existence? Not to mention during the tectonic hormonal shift and the sleep deprivation? It's impossible. As a new parent you are very vulnerable, and as a new mother, you feel a bit like a failure if your miracle can't eat. So it's critical to find someone you can trust to help, and quickly. It is so easy to fall prey to people who don't know enough or aren't sympathetic enough. Our baby couldn't latch, wouldn't suck, had a tongue tie that made it hard to get good motion with her tongue, and suffered some kind of birth or pregnancy-related neck discomfort that made her panic when held to breast. Our midwives said we needed professional help, so we paid the lactation consultant who would see us first -- a consultant who has very good reviews on Yelp and who was smart and helpful and ordered round the clock pumping and feeding with nipple shield and with supplement. That kept the baby fed until the milk really came in, but it didn't solve the problem -- the baby was still very stressed and not eating properly -- and it lead to so little sleep it wasn't sustainable. But thanks to Amrit, who we eventually called in desperation after a couple weeks of this other tactic failing, today my 6-week-old baby is breastfeeding normally and has been for more than a week. It did not seem like we'd get here at some points, but Amrit came to our home and saw how much stress both baby and I were in. She came up with a sustainable plan to get us both rest and then get us back on the path to breastfeeding with no apparatus and no stress, pretty much effortlessly ditching the nipple shield overnight. We also took the baby to a chiropractor for her neck, and Amrit coordinated with both our midwives and the chiropractor, came to our house twice and was in phone contact nearly daily for weeks. And she charged us less than the other consultant. I highly recommend calling her directly rather than going through Bayside. She is wonderful, kind, sympathetic, and most importantly, wise and knowledgeable in the entire postpartum experience. read more

Congratulations! You've made an important decision. A decision to seek assistance on this delicate, emotional and rewarding journey called breastfeeding. When I first meet new families, the number one statement, often accompanied with tears, is from moms saying "I thought this would be much easier". My background is different from most all other consultants. I went to nursing school to specialize in maternity nursing. Back then, women were heavily medicated, delivered in the OR and had forceps deliveries. Very few women breastfed. Although those were the standard delivery practices, somehow I knew it didn't feel right to witness babies coming into the world that way. My life changed in an instant when a mom came into the delivery unit requesting a natural childbirth and wanting to breastfeed. After witnessing that, there was no turning back to those archaic practices. I quit the hospital, studied to be a midwife and studied breastfeeding practices from around the world.

I'm so grateful, after all these years, to have a work that continues to be so fulfilling and gratifying. I'm continually inspired by my families' dedication to want to offer breastfeeding. Five stars are not enough for Amrit! I cannot write enough wonderful things about her. Amrit is not only my midwife and lactation consultant, but a guide for me and my husband as we enter the new world of parenting. My husband and I look forward to every appointment - our visits feel more like getting together with a wise friend than a health care professional. Her approach to midwifery and helping us breastfeed has been exactly what we need - she is both nurturing and very direct in her advice and explanations; she encourages our ideas as to what works best with our baby and uses her many years of experience to guide us; she is very casual and yet every question she asks and everything she says has a purpose. I have completely avoided the painful experiences that many women encounter and I know this is because I started working with Amrit on breastfeeding the day my baby was born. Amrit also helps me maintain a positive outlook regarding my ability to successfully breastfeed. For instance, I am producing more milk than my baby can use, which causes my baby distress each time she begins nursing. I was feeling really bad about this, like I was drowning my baby in milk. Amrit not only taught me how to manage this "problem," she reminded me that it is better than not having enough milk. Amrit is also incredible at involving my husband in all aspects of baby care, including feeding. She and my husband have a bottle feeding session that I am not even allowed to attend! While it will be hard for me to leave my little one, I am so thankful that Amrit will help my husband increase his bond with our baby and feel confident feeding her. I am really dreading our last visit - I don't know what I will do when I don't get to see her every week or two. read more

Amrit is "the boob whisperer"! She helped me and both of my babies achieve pain-free and sustainable breastfeeding habits. This was after both my kids had tongue-ties and needed real coaching on how to latch with newly released tongues. My first baby gummed on nipples until they were bruised, cracked, and scabbed over. I didn't know any better, but Amrit helped me find a routine to practice breastfeeding a little each day, while I also pumped and my nipples healed. It was a very difficult time but she was calm and caring with me through the emotional process. She also incorporated my husband and he learned how to help me as well as to finger-feed our infant my breastmilk so the baby wouldn't get nipple-confusion before she really learned to latch. Then, when ready, Amrit helped us introduce a bottle. I nursed that baby for 18 months! Then, I thought I would have this all down by the second kid but it turned out I needed help again. I knew better than to let me nipples get chewed up! But I still needed coaching to ensure both my baby was getting enough milk and I was getting a comfortable latch. She advised me on everything from increasing milk supply to finding nursing habits that I could live with - without exhausting myself (or the baby). She has tons of experience as a midwife and lactation consultant and can speak to many different postnatal and newborn issues. She also has a warm heart, gives big hugs, and is a true blessing to the community. Don't wait until you are desperate or ready to give up, go see Amrit right away, and find a better path for you and your baby! read more

We were referred to Amrit as a lactation consultant by our pediatrician at Bayside Pediatrics after the birth of our second daughter. With our first daughter, my milk supply dropped off abruptly when she was about six weeks old (after we introduced the bottle), our daughter lost a lot of weight, and we had to supplement with formula from then on out. This was a painful experience and I was determined to exclusively breastfeed our second daughter if at all possible. Now our second daughter is four months old, at the 90th percentile for weight and height, and exclusively breastfed - such a wonderful experience we're having largely due to Amrit's expert help. Amrit is extremely knowledgeable about all the technical aspects of breastfeeding, and her manner is so supportive, kind, and fun. She was so helpful at boosting my confidence and making me feel like I could do this! I also appreciated that she is non-judgmental and supportive of whatever we were able to accomplish, unlike other consultants and doctors I've worked with before who were less supportive and positive, which led to more stress on my part (not a good ingredient for breastfeeding success). Amrit also worked with my husband to introduce the bottle; he really appreciated her practical advice, support, and humor. We both can't rate her highly enough, or thank her enough! read more

I saw Amrit through Bayside Medical (now Stanford Children's Health) for the first time when my son was eight months and was going through a nursing strike after a bad cold stuffed him up. As a result I was experiencing a dramatic reduction in supply and was confused--panicked, really--about a) how much, and what, my baby should be drinking in the course of a day, especially since I work full-time, and b) what the best alternatives to breastmilk were. My back-up supply was down to just a few days and I was pumping just 2 or 3 ounces a day--clearly not enough to sustain a growing boy. As others have indicated, Amrit's warmth and confidence in me were immediately felt, as was her depth of experience in evaluating the size and well-being of my baby. She helped me understand my choices and gave a number of suggestions, ranging from healthy alternatives like making whey for him to drink (so easy!), to how to increase my milk supply by some simple adjustments to my pumping habits. I had some clarifying questions that were easily clarified by email, and now, a month later, baby and I are back on track, and I am confident knowing that I am feeding him the right amount and type for his age. What a relief! read more

Though I could go on for ages about Amrit's skills as a midwife, this review is in praise of her absolute prowess as a lactation consultant. While breastfeeding is one of the most natural biological experiences we participate in, doing it in a way that works for both mama and baby can be far from intuitive. I attribute the fact that my daughter and I have never had any feeding related issues solely to our good fortune in working with Amrit since day one. Amrit has a warm and nurturing manner, yet has the unflinching precision and eagle-eyed attention to detail that is necessary to ensure that babies are drinking milk in a pain-free way for their mamas. She explains things clearly and is very hands on. She has guided my family through the immensely important first days of breastfeeding, helped my husband introduce the bottle, and has instructed me how to keep up my supply and how much and often to pump when I returned to work and as we began introducing solids. Amrit is tuned into the wisdom of the ages and channels all of that to her clients in a very straight-forward and grounded way. If I were to make a list of top five essentials for new mamas, Amrit would be all five. read more

21 years ago I avoided c-section because Amrit Khalsa and her Labor of Love team knew how to birth a 10+ pound, posterior baby. Their patience and support through 11 days of off-and-on labor, and the range of traditions and resources they drew on, resulted in my baby turning at last and being born at home, undrugged, and I didn't even need a stitch. This same labor in a hospital setting would have certainly resulted in a c-section, and we are only now learning so many dangers c-sections pose to women and their future births. "In accreta, which doctors believe is most often caused by scarring from prior cesarean sections, the placenta sticks around and embeds. The condition was exceedingly rare in the 1950s, occurring in only one in 30,000 deliveries in the US. Today, because of the rise in C-sections, it shows up in about one in 500 births. One in 14 American women with accreta die, usually from hemorrhaging too much blood." - from https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/6/29/15830970/women-health-care-maternal-mortality-rate My baby and I were so fortunate to have Amrit's expertise. Amrit is an amazing lactation consultant who is not only a wealth of practical and expert information on lactation and breastfeeding, but is also extremely empathetic and compassionate and good-humored, too. Her home visit helped lift my spirits when I was on the brink of giving up on breastfeeding, and she made room in her schedule to meet me for a follow-up visit when I was experiencing new struggles. Both times, she was very generous with her time and stayed with us much longer than she had to to ensure that my husband and I got all of our questions and concerns addressed. She is also really great with our infant and shared practical information on how to soothe her and take care of her, too, since she also used to be a midwife and an L&D nurse. She is also reasonable and has a flexible attitude about breastfeeding--unlike some LCs, she will not shame you if you struggle and need to rely on formula to supplement your supply and such. Amrit is THE BEST person to call if you're having ANY kind of issues with breastfeeding--my husband and I cannot recommend her highly enough! :D read more

When our 3-month-old was STILL refusing to take a bottle despite our daily attempts from 4 weeks of life, we felt pretty desperate. I was to return to work and the baby to start daycare and we had no clear feeding plan. Then we found Amrit. When I spoke to Amrit on the phone, she assured me she had seen this problem many times over the years and she was confident she could help us. Her confidence was hugely comforting. Amrit came to our house and within minutes of meeting Ella had an accurate read on her. It's rare to see someone who understands young infants so adeptly and it is clear that Amrit has a gift AND years of experience. Within 30 minutes, Amrit had our bottle-refuser taking a bottle. Our minds were blown. And more importantly, she provided us with a clear plan to maintain this newly gained skill. I truly believe Amrit is a baby whisperer. And she is so warm, confident in her approach and skillful--just what we needed during this time. I cannot recommend Amrit enough to anyone looking for lactation support. read more

I had a homebirth late on a Saturday night, and delivered a healthy boy who was a little reluctant to latch. My midwives called Amrit late that night to make a special request that she come to my house the next day, Sunday, for a lactation consultation. From this first meeting (scheduled merely hours before, late at night!) and on, Amrit has been very accommodating, warm, knowledgable, and supportive, and has made us feel like we have a strong support network. She even called to check in on us after that first visit, and spent quite a while talking us through our questions. Thanks to her guidance, my son latched and nursed great and had no problem taking a bottle when needed. From nursing, to introducing the bottle, to beginning solids, I have been able to call and email Amrit with questions, and she's followed up with copious amounts of positive, nurturing, and supportive (of both me and my son) advice. Amrit truly seems to love what she does and has quite a gift for supporting new mamas and babies! read more

Amrit helped me birth my baby on June 14, 2008...It was one of the best experiences of my life! I had my baby at home and though it was no easy birth, Amrit made me feel safe and confident through the whole journey... She is beyond capable and in her solid presence I found great comfort and inspiration. From prenatal-post natal I never felt that I was missing any part of this life changing, incredibly exhilarating, awe inspiring ride...I am incredibly grateful for all her wisdom and truly believe that it was her who made this transition happen with grace and ease...Her expert lactation training was also a blessing and she made me feel normal that breast feeding isn't necessarily second nature to all new moms... She is an incredible person with a huge heart and anyone who gets to work with her should feel honored! read more

My husband and I were lucky enough to have Amrit as our midwife for the birth of our son last year. I tend to be anxious in conventional medical settings, so decided that a home birth would be right for us. We found Amrit to be wonderful throughout the entire pregnancy, birth and post-partum experience. She was always knowledgeable and supportive, with a strong intuitive sense of what we all needed. Prenatal visits were a joy, and the postpartum visits were very helpful as well. Amrit taught us new nursing positions to try, helped us to introduce a bottle, and was instrumental in supporting a healthy breastfeeding relationship between my son and me. I highly recommend her for both midwifery and lactation assistance! read more

We started with Amrit before our daughter arrived, and thank goodness we did. We had no idea what was in store when breastfeeding! Amrit is easy to talk to and leaves no question unanswered. She comes with abundant knowledge and compassion. As with others, she helped us with EVERYTHING! from the first latch, to bottle feeding options, breast pump activation and has quite a treasure trunk of remedies to help along the way. My favorite thing about working with Amrit is that she passes no judgment, and works with her intuition, and encourages you to work with yours. I am very grateful we had Amrit to teach us and guide us through our now enjoyable breastfeeding journey! read more

Amrit has been a Lactation Counselor and Midwife for over 45 years and her knowledge and compassion is of the highest quality. With my first daughter, my milk supply had decreased due to her tongue tie that I was unaware of. Amrit held my hand and helped me during a very tough time in my life. For my second daughter, I saw Amrit when she was only 2 weeks old, we immediately got the tongue tie rectified on her advice and she helped me with pumping my milk in preparation of going back to work. I highly recommend Amrit to ALL first time moms and to anyone who's having difficulty breastfeeding. Thank you Amrit, We Love You! read more

Amrit was able to help support me with weening my newborn off of the nipple shield during her home visit. As I bumbled with getting the hang of breastfeeding, Amrit was creative and compassionate in her approach . Amrit was our midwife for both our children (in Sept 07 and Feb 12). She was great both times. she was great integrating the older sibling with our last birth. She also very helpful breastfeeding advice, since the 2nd baby had different issues than the 1st, and she was able to diagnose the issues & give good advice. She is very positive and compassionate and funny. She was great to work with and we would hire her again if were going to have a 3rd. read more

My entire extended family now refers to Amrit as the baby whisperer. I thought breast feeding was going to be something that just came naturally. For me, at least, it wasn't.
