I love this Amtrak station. Compared to the downtown STL stop, this is like flying first class. It's been a while since I've taken a train out of here, but we did a while back as a wrap up to a bike ride along the Katy Trail. We hired a shuttle from a St. Charles bike shop (Bike Stop Cafe) and they transported us here. I love the vibe of Kirkwood itself, and it doesn't hurt that there's an ice cream shop right next to the station. The folks were friendly, the station is clean, the train was timely... all in all, a great experience. Again the downtown STL stop feels more like a rough bus station, so if you can choose between the two, I'd opt for this one. read more

During COVID the station interior is open only for passengers--when it's open. Picking up a rider at midday on a Thursday the building was locked and dark. Delivering a rider at mid-afternoon on the weekend the station was open. Masks required inside. It's a cute, comfortable station. For waiting passengers it's more inviting than Amtrak's St. Louis depot. It's also easy to pick up riders here with 2 or 3 hour free parking close to the building. Kirkwood's adjacent downtown provides interesting browsing before or after a train ride. read more

This train station has history and nostalgia built right in. It's a beautiful stone building from the late 1800's. It's no longer staffed by Amtrak, but friendly Kirkwood volunteers help passengers and visitors. You can make a reservation by calling 1-800-872-7245 and when "Julie" is talking say "Agent" and you will be connected to a live person. I absolutely love the idea of taking the train. We have taken it quite a few times when visiting the West Coast and have had great experiences. Such great experiences in fact, that we decided to give it a try here last weekend. We took the train from Kirkwood to Kansas City. Being the big spender my husband is, he even splurged and spent the extra 15.00 to upgrade us to first class. Reeaaal Fannccyy. An hour into the trip, and I was concocting a plan to bring the train system back into popular culture. I mean what was not to love? Great seats that lean into beds. Clean and spacious bathrooms. Fantastic scenery. An amazing glass of wine. A great book. My I POD. A mini vacation if you will. I thought "why doesn't every one take the train?" Six hours and ten minutes later (almost twice the time it takes to drive), when we pulled into the station, I was beginning to get the idea of why they don't. We must have spent an hour in total completely stopped, waiting for all the freight trains to pass. We were an hour late getting into Kansas City. The same story on the way home. Almost an hour and a half late. Would be singing nothing but praises if it didn't take soooo long. Final Verdict: Plan on being late. Bring your pillow. Order the wine. Who writes a Yelp review for an Amtrak station? This lady. Took the Missouri River Line from Kansas City to STL. I have been avoiding this method of transportation since the fourth grade, when a seat pinched my leg on a field trip to Jefferson City - I was a fickle kid. That being said, the conductors on this particular trip were not only funny, but extremely welcoming, which was refreshing. I upgraded to business class for a quieter space to do big girl stuff (aka work on my laptop) - I did this right from the train through the app and it was a breeze. I'm definitely bumping Amtrak to the top of the list when I travel between these two cities. When you compare the sheer cost differential between flying / driving (gas) / Amtrak, the train is no contest to your other options as far as both value and efficiency go. By the time you schedule in your bathroom breaks driving, your trip time is comparable to that of Amtrak. Not to mention you can completely avoid the I-70 corridor altogether. When are we going to be able to write a Yelp review for that lovely stretch of road? Yikes. To conclude, I loved my experience and will definitely ride again. It's cheaper to take this train than the STL downtown option and it's a safer place if you need to leave your car. However, it's not really accessible by public transit, so plan on driving there or getting dropped off. For parking, you need to have a permit that is issued by a volunteer or you may get a ticket. The station is only staffed an hour before a train arrives, which caused an issue for us dropping off a car to have when I took the train back from Jefferson City. It's walking distance to downtown Kirkwood, which has plenty of dining options if you end up being stuck in the area for awhile. Overall, very pleasant experience. read more

Been riding the Amtrak at least twice a mounts round trip from Warrensburg to Kirkwood since August. It's been a great way for me to get from school and home. I live in Kirkwood about 7 minutes from the station which is a big plus. Its only about a 10 minute walk from my place in Warrensburg to the station. I have always been a train fan my whole life and love the Amtrak. The conductors are always friendly and helpful. The snack car is great when your hungry or thirsty although the prices are quite high. I have become a user of Amtrak Business Class which is located in the front of the snack car. I know many of the conductors and snack car attendants. Gary is one of the best snack car guys and is always really friendly and helpful. The conductors always know I am going to Kirkwood and on the way back Warrensburg. Defiantly upgrade to business class it is worth it!!!!!! If you are traveling alone they have a section with just one seat and direct isle access. These seats are much bigger and more comfortable. They are leather and recline much further than your standard coach seat. Two foot rests make for a more pleasant journey. Much quieter and overall just a better ride. Overall the train is the best way to travel across the state of Missouri!!!! read more

I took the Amtrak recently from Kirkwood to Hermann Missouri for a day at the wineries with a bachelorette party. The ride there was perfect, the seats were comfortable. The train, however, was 2.5 hours late picking us up for the ride back. This wasn't a real big deal since there was a bar close by that was still open but, had that bar not been open, we would have had no where to go since the station in Hermann is the size of a candy bar with not much else around. read more

Having a meeting in Independence, MO and not having someone to ride with got me thinking: Why not take Amtrak? I decided to splurge on Business (First) Class. A MUST. Lots of kids and families take the River Runner (St. Louis to KC). So if you want to work or rest quietly - pay the extra. I randomly looked up coupon codes on Google and ended up getting 20% off my fare. SCORE!!!! Made up for the extra I paid. The kiosk is easy to get your tickets in the Kirkwood Station. It's nice - bathrooms, tables, clean. The volunteers are friendly, though one told me to go to the front of the train when I should've been in the back. I made it though. The Amtrak employees were nice and tell you when it's your stop, so you can sleep without worrying that you'll miss it. Decent food and beverage choices and prices, considering. I'm really looking forward to my travel back to St. Louis! Very relaxing. My train was on time and we did wait on the track for about 10 minutes so were 10 minutes late. No big deal - there was a freight train accident, so it clogged things up. It is 90% on time so people who weren't are in the minority. Next time I'm traveling on this route, I DEFINITELY will take the train! read more
