The only things they stock are cards and paper and string and sellotape, the kind of stuff you might need to post something! There are little counters around the edges of the small store for you to write your letter and lick your stamp, nothing fancy just practical. The people behind the counter look like they have been there for years too, not that they look old but more that they treat customers like you think you would have been treated a long time ago and this is a good thing!

The building is quite small which is a minor drawback, but don't be put off if you see a big queue, as I said before the service is fast and reliable. It's probably not the fanciest, cleanest or most comfortable of post offices, but chances are if your going to the post office you are there to do what you need to do and get out, this is the ideal location for that.

I was here however to collect a parcel that couldn't be delivered and for that I had to go around the back. If you need to do the same, then go through the gate to the right as you look at the front of the PO. OUt the back to the left you'll find a door and a small vestibule, here the nice man will give you your parcel. They only issue I would have is the docket doesn't really say that you need to go around the back and there is one A4 sized notice inside the main PO (that I could see) saying that for collections, go around the back. I'd been caught out before whereby I'd queue and get to the counter, only to be told to go out back. I think in general An Post could be more informative about collection points and where to find them.

Might be the unfortunate place beside the long-closed hotel that sucks up most of the block. Or, it could be a result of that lengthy road works program that made most of this street off limits to pedestrians. Could be the tendency for shops along this stretch of the quays to shutter after a few months trade (or at least that's how it feels). But yet here it is, a place for your stamps, billpay and top ups right behind a very active bus stop and actually quite busy throughout the day. That'll teach me to judge a shop by it shutters.

They provide all the postal services and even sell commission free Sterling and US Dollars at, seemingly, a mid-market rate. The staff is friendly and there's a small stand of greeting cards and envelopes you can purchase in a pinch. It is worth noting that you have to get your registered or swift post in by 5:15, so plan for that, but everything else seems to be grand until they close.

In 2008 the post office on busy Shelbourne road finally saw the light and kept their doors open for the working folk in the embassies, shops, agencies and bank headquarters that surround it. Stately, wood trimmed and elegant, the post office blends surreptitiously with the vintage cottages still standing despite Ballsbridge's hurtling makeover of the last ten years. Send and receive large parcels, buy greeting cards and do all those things which can only be done in a post office... and do take your time -you have it now, after all.
