I would say the trail has some uses but is still mostly about potential. The river is cleaner than it used to be but still a work in progress. The trail itself has useful sections for commuters, and some pretty dead areas, along with major and useful sections yet to be built. It is important green space, but it doesn't yet get you to the gardens or the big downtown sights quite easily enough.

Bottom Line: At least 15 of 20+ miles of this paved path are complete and ready for walking, biking and strolling. Lucky for me, I stumbled across the peaceful Anacostia Riverwalk Trail but I am hoping that this Yelp review will make it easier for others to learn about the trail that borders DC's waterfront on the Anacostia River and Washington Channel. I'm also hoping many others will add reviews to provide greater detail than I can. This trail has been in process for several years and I believe it will be completed this year and be close to 28 miles long. The final trail will consist of 19 sections with most of them being along the banks of the Anacostia River but some of the path meanders along the Washington Channel close to the Tidal Basin. The northern most portion of the trail is slated to go through the National Arboretum which has some awesome sights like bald eagles and columns from the original Capitol building. The trail is obviously a great place for recreation but it was also designed to help commuters. When stumbling across this trail, I only did a short section along the waterfront which was very peaceful. Next time, I hope to rent a bike from Capital Bikeshare and ride the many miles of trails. The trail seems to be very quiet and safe and offers some great views of the Washington Monument. Also, the trail borders other popular sites like the Nat's Stadium. I believe some protions of this trail have actually been around for a long time, so the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail project is really about connecting existing disparate trails to make a continuous loop.

Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is a local gem in DC. It runs from H Street down by the RFK Stadium to Navy Yard with much to experience along the way. It's by the river and with it comes some cool wildlife. Stop by Kingsman Park to see the best wildlife. The trail feels safe and you'll see bikers and runners. If you go before sunrise, you may catch the sunrise over the river, which is beautiful!

A great day for a hike on the A.T. This one is just o/s Fauquier County on Mt Weather. I took the…read moreSOBO trail a couple years ago. This time I went North to the waterfall. Let me give some mad respect to whomever dug out the spot to put in a rather large parking area for us! For years we've been on side of this narrow dirt road. * Thank. (Virtual fist pump). This was 3 miles out and 3 miles back. The waterfall is around 1 mile mark. It's off to the right. *please understand, ricks are slippery whether they're wet ot not. How someone brings three toddlers here with no backpack, water or first aid is beyond me. I had to leave the area. But it was really nice. Very relaxing and you did have to hand/foot climb to get up there. Be careful please. I double backed and got on the A.T. Couple more miles to the secret cliff I saw in another Yelp post. :) . Lots of people walked by, no one knew I was there. I had it all to myself. Its better than the actual lookout. Anyway. I scanned the rocks for danger, shot some pics and sat down for water and dry crackers. I look over and there are 2 snakes curled up by a small tree about 6 feet from me. I spoke to them. "Thought you'd hide from me. I got you!" It was funny. I took a couple pics and kept my eyes on them. Only takes a second to lose track and they end up right at me saying, "HA got you back!" I sat a while then headed back down. I enjoyed it! I'd like to section hike and have a car waiting to take me back to my own car where I started. They should have an Uber Hikes App available for that. ;) This way I can hike for as far as I want without turning around to come straight back.
