Anasazi Trading Post - Lakeside, Arizona

If you go here you will be amazed. The owner used to teach anthropology and has a vast amount of knowledge. The shop caters mostly to local Native Americans and the owner speaks their language. In fact he knows several native languages including some African languages. The place is like a mini museum. Each item has a history and purpose. Many items are to make traditional costumes and dresses. The local medicine men direct the natives to visit this shop for cures and specific hard to get items. If you want a taste of local lore and information, this is the place. You will leave with a wealth of information that you would have to pay tuition for at a university, but you don't have to take an exam. The only drawback is he doesn't sell many rugs and sand paintings... we were kind of looking for them, but had a great talk in the car about all we learned. read more

We stumbled upon this shop today while killing time in Show Low. WE WERE SO LUCKY! Alan, the owner, has a wealth of knowledge about Native American history, culture, and religion. He patiently answered about 500 of my son's questions about tribal customs and artifacts. His shop is like a wonderful museum and he is THE BEST tour guide we've ever had.
