After years of extremely poor delivery service, ADN has now dropped to 2 days a week delivery: Wednesdays and Sundays, forcing probably thousands of subscribers to go online while paying the same subscription price. Reading online is not for everyone, regardless of the rave reviews, and this fact is not going to change. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the change creates a drop in profits. Time will tell. Very disappointing to live in the largest city in Alaska and not have a decent paper to have in hand. For example, one cannot drink their coffee and play the crossword/word puzzles anymore. ADN suggests printing it out from online. Excuse me? What's the point in that? Bottom line: A discount should be provided to those who are forced to settle for the 2 day delivery, especially since the online option could really use some revamping. read more

The junk mail needs to stop. This "Community Xtra, An Edition of Anchorage Daily News" advertising paper is filling up my tiny PO box to the point that there is no room left for regular mail and packages. I do a fair amount of travel so there are weeks long periods where I don't use my PO box and I can't always be there to empty this stuff into the garbage. I never requested to receive this publication. I have never been an ADN subscriber and do not ever intend to be, and I do not wish to receive any publications from them. I have contacted their customer service office twice, on June 4 and July 30, 2021, given my address and explained the situation, and both times they falsely told me it would stop. I have had no issues stopping junk mail on the first request from the likes of RedPlum and the massive junk mail lobby DMA. It's rude and disrespectful. It needs to stop now, for me and for anyone else who has told you they do not want to receive this. read more

Articles days or weeks old. Mediocre editorials. Letters that prove the general population's lack of critical reasoning and propensity toward ignorance. Content continues to decline. They now charge for wedding announcements (tacky) and obituaries (tackier). The articles they reprint from America are already weeks old and are mostly irrelevant to the Anchorage community. One often leaves with the impression that the editors are neither from Anchorage nor very interested in understanding life in Anchorage from the perspective of locals. After the Times closed, the lack of competition allowed ADN to offer an inferior product with impunity. It's 15 years later and we are still without a reputable community forum. Our loss. read more

My parents get the paper every day and it's left at the bottom of our driveway every morning. I've watched the delivery driver walk it up to the door for all 4 of the nearby houses who get it. Twice in one week it was left in a puddle (the only puddle around). So disappointing service. The other reason is I was trying to place an anniversary announcement for my parents 40th anniversary and it was advertised as free. However when I went to place the announcement it kept asking for payment. I emailed for help and was told it was 2008 pricing and there was nothing they could do. Now good customer service would thank me for bringing it to their attention and place the ad for me for free as advertised. But no, was told to pay $65 (for a small announcement and additional lines cost more). I will not pay $65 now out of principle even though I still want the announcement. I will also talk to my family about cancelling their longtime subscription. read more

However, Joy Guest and/or ADN failed to respond to the donor, ultimately affecting community children. - Coordinator mistreatment of community members intending to help with, give advice on spelling bees, including a 2-time former ADN Alaska State Spelling Bee Champion - Coordinator hanging up on individuals interested in discussing and helping improve the spelling bee - Coordinator not willing to entertain phone calls from individuals about spelling bees due to "her real job and deadlines" - Coordinator fabrication of resume, claiming she is a "Licensed Realtor" (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/joy-guest/8/928/b31) when in fact, she is a "Licensed Realtor's Assistant and Buyer Specialist" (http://kathyjfernandez.com/our_stories) - Coordinator and her selected volunteers having 0 knowledge of material used for the State Spelling Bee (Spell It) or its 1,150+ words - Little to no knowledge of Scripps rules and guidelines - Breaking Scripps rules and guidelines - Refusing to give students the "language of origin" - Pronouncing incorrectly and imprecisely - Pronouncer unknowledgeable about diacritical marks and pronunciation keys - Coordinator and pronouncer skipping words compiled and ordered by Scripps too liberally - Difficultly inconsistent within rounds, due to excessive skipping around by pronouncer (each word and page increases in difficulty, hence why there should not be such liberal skipping) - Running out of Scripps Spell It words by just the 2nd round due to liberal skipping, lack of knowledge about Spell It! and Spell It! words - Lack of utilization of "difficult" words studied BY students IN the Spell It guide, due to coordinator and pronouncer ignorance towards Spell It and Spell It! words. Coordinator and pronouncer incorrectly assess what is difficult. - By the third round, progression into "Additional Words," which are intended by Scripps to be "end-of-bee" challenge words IF/WHEN all Spell It words are utilized via competition - Coordinator "tries to stay away from spelling bee stuff as much as possible"; unwilling to learn about Spell It booklet and learn Spell It words ----- INTRODUCTORY NOTE ON SCRIPPS FORMAT OF STATE/DISTRICT BEE AND CORRESPONDING MATERIAL: Spell It is "the official list of study words for 2014 district, county, city, regional and state spelling bees" (myspellit.com by Merriam-Webster). It is the official word book written and distributed by Scripps. As the official Spelling Bee Spell It website (myspellit.com) states, the "purpose [of the spelling bee] is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives." Scripps states that "local spelling bee officials use word lists generated by the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It would be much more difficult to prepare for a spelling bee without a word source. I would expect Spell It to be used in a bee at the district or regional level. Using a standard word source eliminates many complaints about fairness of word difficulty. Every word is fair game when the words are known beforehand." T Mahoney represented Wisconsin and placed 15th in the National Spelling Bee. He then proceeded to work for numerous school and regional spelling bees from 2007-2010, and in 2007, 2008, and 2010, he worked for National Spelling Bee. Mahoney also stated that he "would expect a regional/district-level bee coordinator and those involved to be aware of the Spell It booklet and its words," particularly because it is a) created by Scripps for distribution and use at the regional/district level and b) made publicly available to coordinators, parents, and spellers online and through their schools. Good and accurate reporting, with a lot of neutrality - I have enjoyed this paper for over 20 years, with its ability to provide details fairly, and both sides of the issues. Being able to read the headlines / most of the paper online or on the app is extremely convenient - especially Mike Ds political points of view. The advertising options offered are not quality. I'd recommend going a different route if you're looking for print advertising. We spent over $5000 on ads within 1 week and it generated maybe 3-4 calls and a few visits to our site. We specialize in marketing so our ads looked very professional and the information was clear. If you're looking for a paper to advertise in I'd suggest looking for cheaper options. read more

My review is on the customer service at ADN. When I first ordered the paper I received it for 1 Sunday and then it skipped the next 2-3 Sundays. I had to call, then I received the paper the following weekend and then it skipped again and had to call AGAIN. Once it got on schedule for delivery then I was on their "schedule" for telephone marketing! Reading from a script they thanked for being a loyal customer and then wanted me to purchase more days or extend my subscription. I would then just hang up on then. That bit me in the bootie as I guess one of those calls was to extend my subscription. When I didn't talk to them, they took it upon themselves to extend my subscription and send me a bill! Ridiculous! So now I just paid an $11.90 invoice for a paper that just frustrated me to either receive or bother be during the day. Not the way to do business! read more

I have subscribed for many years and the rate seems to be increasing a lot. I checked online and the new subscription rate is much less than what I pay now. Thinking of canceling and then signing up again. Other then the monthly $$ going up, my only grief would be the turn over of delivery people. I used to give a tip to the paper delivery person but they change so often lately it doesn't seem right. I think the higher price for the paper should be reallocated to wages. I have never had a issue with customer service and the few problems of getting the paper delivered to my porch ( because of the high turn over ) has been resolved to my satisfaction. read more
