Walking in it reminds you of a breakfast diner. The service is very friendly and has really really good seafood. Entrees come with 2 hush puppies and coleslaw along with a side of many options. The seafood is fresh tasting and plenty full for the price. There is no liquor or beer. read more

This is our first time eating at anchors away. We were very impressed with the quality of the food. Heaven worked in the fast food industry in the past, I noticed the quality of the oil used to make the fish and shrimp and fries. I could tell that the oil had been recently changed. The food was delivered hot. Our server Whitney was very attentive and very nice. I came in for fish and chips, and although it was not explicitly called out on the menu, I was able to construct it by ordering small cod, hush puppies slaw, and french fries. It was delicious. The ambience was very simplistic with nautical theme as you would expect in a seafood restaurant. The booths were very comfortable. And I would definitely recommend this place to others. read more

I looked prior to our trip and found this gem. It had excellent ratings and we love seafood so had to give it a try! It was a packed house and there were two tables left when we got there so we just sat ourselves down because they were very busy. The wait staff was nice and our server was very sweet and was hopping. We only waited about 15-20 minutes for our food and it was definitely great. I got fried flounder and shrimp and hubs got fried catfish and shrimp. It was very good! So tasty and cooked perfectly! We will definitely eat here next time we are up in the Spruce Pine area! read more

What a southern jewel!! Have been here several times, this time with my family. There was one server but because she recognized and spoke to every table, 15-20 in all, we felt comfortable to simply sit and chat knowing she'd be back soon. It was amazing how that southern hospitality puts everyone at ease and appreciates her dilemma. The drinks came out, she took our order and it was obvious everything was cooked to order and was delicious! By the way, she was also the cashier!! Another server eventually showed up towards the end of our meal and then the service literally doubled and from us, so did the tip!! This is a difficult review to write, because we had some very conflicting experiences when we came for dinner last evening. I have been to this establishment many times (I am local) and I wanted to bring my elderly mother to dinner here. On the plus side, the food was excellent as usual. The portions were plentiful, the food tasted fresh and well seasoned, and the selections were more than ample. Their hush puppies are to die for! However, one of the negative aspects was the staff's behavior. There was a large family group at the restaurant, and apparently the workers were quite familiar with them because they were all clustered around the diners. When a server did come to take our order, she appeared very sullen and disinterested. It was hard to get her attention, and when our food arrived it was basically tossed on the table in front of us. There were children running around the restaurant, and staff were all involved with playing with the kids rather than waiting on customers. In addition, the prices were not written on the check, and when we paid the bill, the cashier did not give us back the correct change. (We did not notice until we were back home). I have always had positive experiences here in the past, and hope that this was just an "off" night. read more

After a day of sightseeing and hiking, we struck out on a place to eat in Little Switzerland. Just down the road in Spruce Pine, we came upon Anchors Away. It's an unassuming little diner, but the food was delicious. Three out of four us had fried seafood and it was awesome: not at all greasy, very flavorful and the sides were great too. One of us had grilled fish and it was grilled perfectly. We would definitely come back again if we're in the area. read more

Went to VA Last week Visiting Family! We went out to Anchors away cafe and it was Great! Fun atmosphere and the food is delicious! Our waitress was so nice and accommodating to our needs! Would definitely recommend Anchors away to anyone visiting the area as you will NOT be disappointed read more

Best seafood within 50 mile radius! Honest hardworking owners and staff that want nothing but to make your dining experience a great one! My husband is picky about seafood and it passed his test. Where else can you get auce shrimp for around ten bucks and they are perfect. I usually get the large combination with shrimp and oysters and it's always perfect. Give this place a shot you won't be disappointed read more

The broiled flounder was dry. You shouldn't need a knife to cut broiled fish, but I did. The hush puppies were nothing but breading. The cole slaw tasted odd. It's hard to mess up a baked potato, but it would've been nice to have real butter rather than vegetable oil spread. Even the water tasted stale. I'm guessing the ice machine needs to be cleaned. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the friendly service. We won't return. read more

This place was fantastic. I got a combination platter which included fish, clams, slaw and hush puppies. I was thrilled. One of the best sea food dinners I have ever had. Visited on recent trip to mountains, was recommended by a campground host 20 miles away. We got carry out due to covid concerns (no outdoor area), had dinner on a BRP overlook w great views, so no hardship ! The fried flounder (2 very large pieces) was very good, not overcooked, and not greasy at all. Wife's broiled baby flounder was good, but she should have gotten the double order- it was a baby flounder, after all. the prices are inexpensive, especially in relation to quality and value. generous portions of slaw, baked potato was good. I prefer the not-sweetened hush puppies, but thats just me. Staff were nice and attentive to this take out ( I do tip pretty generously on take out) This is in a rural county, 37% vax rate- masks were not being worn anywhere, understandable at the table (tables were not especially spread out but not cheek by jowl either) but customers were not wearing in or out. I did sense get some looks when I walked in w a mask, but not being able to read minds I can't speak to their thoughts. nobody said anything abt it, & like I said staff went out of their way to be welcoming. read more
