Thee is limited parking here - I was able to briefly park across the road and no one said anything. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "This was Ah-Yeh-Li A-Lo-Hee, the Center of the World, to the Cherokee Indians. To this assembly ground, from which trails radiate in many directions, they came to hold their councils, to dance and worship which were to them related functions, and to barter their hides, furs and blankets for the trade goods of the white men from Augusta and other settlements. At one time there was a move to establish here the Hart County seat. This site was also a noted roost in the days when the now extinct passenger pigeons migrated here in the autumn in such numbers that "their weight broke the tree limbs."" Set on the grounds of the Oconee County Courthouse, this historical marker confronts a grim chapter…read morefrom our past - one that unfolded less than a century ago. The front of the marker reads, "In 1930, over 100 white men and boys broke into Oconee County Jail to lynch Allen Green, a prominent local African American. Born in 1879, Green lived a few blocks east of here with his wife, Corrie Green. On April 20, he was arrested on likely false charges of raping a white woman. He was then brought to the jail which stood near this site. For several nights, groups met at the mill baseball field planning his lynching." The reverse, "On April 23, the mob came to the jail, attacked the sheriff, and forced Green from his cell. They took him to a location outside West Union, tied him to a tree and shot him repeatedly. One S.C. newspaper described it as 'among the most barbarous crimes ever committed' in the state. Seventeen people, including the mayor of Walhalla, were indicted for murder and other charges. None were convicted. Green is buried outside of town." This marker does more than recount a tragedy - it demands remembrance, reflection, and reckoning. It belongs here on the courthouse grounds as a reminder. It is marker number 37-26 and it was sponsored by Oconee County Arts and Historical Commission. It was erected in 2022. The first courthouse for Anderson County was completed in 1828. In 1850, a grand edifice was added…read moreand the building's brick walls were plastered over and painted white. Four large Grecian columns were erected on a portico at each end. On the buildings western end, a belfry tower was added with a large bell that could be rung to signify the time, or to notify citizens of special events such as weddings or funerals or to sound a civil defense alert or fire alarm. By the 1890's, the county had outgrown the courthouse and in 1898, a mid-Victorian style courthouse was built on the site of the old one. This new building is today the "historic" courthouse, which was renovated to include an addition on the east side of the building in 1939 and an annex added in 1940. The "new" courthouse was built in 1991 though the "historic" courthouse was updated with new electrical and plumbing. Today, the historic courthouse of Anderson County contains administrative offices and hosts County Council meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The area that is now Hart County was part of the Cherokee Nation up to the mid 1700s. A number of…read moretreaties with the natives in 1773 and 1783 provided the lands that formed Franklin County in 1784 and Elbert County in 1790. Portions of those counties were used to create Hart County in 1843. Settlers, primarily from Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina of English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh descent, moved into the area, obtained title to the land and began clearing the land for homesites and cultivation, in many instances with the help of their slaves. The first settlements were made adjacent to major waterways, the Savannah and Tugaloo Rivers and smaller creeks, to take advantage of the rich bottomland, the most suitable area for farming. On December 7, 1853, Hart County, named for Revolutionary War heroine, Nancy Hart, was created by Act of the Legislature. It is the only Georgia county named for a woman. The first county courthouse was a two-story frame building located on Lot 1 on the northeastern side of the square in Hartwell. It was the first structure built in the new town. This courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1900 and was replaced in 1901 with a two-story Neoclassical style building designed by Atlanta architect J. W. Golucke. Unfortunately, this courthouse was lost to fire as well in the 1960s and was replaced by the current one-story courthouse. It is a modern and functional design that was secured when I was here. You can still walk the grounds which have a number of monuments and memorials including for the Vietnam War, a combined Korean and World War memorial and of course a Civil War. We were driving from Georgia to NC and stopped by this rest area / welcome center . This spot was…read morereally good , but only the restrooms were open . The main hall wasn't open . Restrooms were clean and easily accessible . Lots of parking outside . No food or drink sold in this service area . It's just for refreshment. There were tables around .. if you get your own food , there are lots of spots to sit and eat . Don't miss a photo opportunity with "welcome to South Carolina" signboard. 4 stars ..

It reads, "Located 1.09 miles northwest, this cemetery marks the original site of Hopewell Baptist Church which was constituted in 1803. The cemetery contains graves of Revolutionary and Confederate veterans. Some graves are marked by field stones with hand-chiseled initials." This is marker number 4-14 and it was erected in 1975 by the Hopewell Baptist Church Congregation. There is room to stop to read the marker while you're waiting at the light. This marker is located in downtown Anderson and points out one of the installation of one of modern…read moretechnology in the city. On the front, "Anderson was dubbed "The Electric City" in 1895 when William C. Whitner, an engineer and native of Anderson, built a hydroelectric power plant which was the first in the South to transmit electricity over long distance lines. The plant, in McFall's Mill at High Shoals on the Rocky River 6 mi. E, supplied power to light the city and also operated several small industries in Anderson. In 1897 Whitner replaced the [...]" And continued on the reverse, "[...] experimental plant with a larger generating station at Portman Shoals 11 miles west on the Seneca River. The extra power from this plant powered Anderson Cotton Mills and a streetcar line which was the forerunner of the Piedmont & Northern RR. Both plants pioneered in transmitting high voltage electricity direct from the station switchboard. This innovation helped spur the modern industrialization of the Southeast."
