I mean just to deviate a moment a young Guy mid 20's was being interviewed on telly and asked about face masks etc he said 'I don't believe in Covid' as his rationale for not using a mask or sterilisation. So next time he gets a cold what will he believe it to be. Maybe if like Covid the virus was 10,000 times larger than, rather than smaller than, a grain of salt he might believe. That's the kinda stupid no one can legislate for. Rant over. This place has a Costa, a Dealz (unimpressed by this place) Elverys Sports - a local independent and a Penny's. Now it also has a TK Maxx - a store that I will occasionally amble around as it can throw up some foodie surprises. Last time I got poached pears in an amaretto syrup, and weirdly coloured yellow, pink and black Italian pasta. They can produce some of the more weird and wonderful coffee beans too. Now just remember TK don't do food bargains even though the price labels show a discounted and higher prices so you'll see 227 g of coffee at £6 was £12 - £6 is more than enough for this weight. They had a kilo of illy coffee and their discount price was near twice a local supermarket price. So go here for the foodie off beat, the different stuff you usually don't find locally. You might be glad you did. But I did something right out of character I bought socks. They didn't come out right - I do wear socks but it's M&S for a lifetime. Socks from bamboo who'd a thought. What next. What would be really even more weird would be the re election of Mr Trump. There's an old saying here. Fool me once you're the fool. Fool me twice and I'm the fool. Watch this space.

I bought some organic French green lentils (€3.60 for 500 g), organic basmati rice (€5.85 for 1 kg) and a bag of Ricola (who doesn't love Ricola?). Dee and Co. are friendly and helpful and ready to listen to recommendations for stuff to keep in stock. (So let them know if there's something you'd like!) Prices are competitive with other health food stores and the selection was good... and expanding. I'm also giving them 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact based on what they keep in stock. A health food store is a haven for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone who wants to eat "mostly plants." The rice and lentils may seem pricey, but they are good quality organic products from a reliable supplier (Rainbow organic) and with just these two and a few onions, I could make enough Mujaddara to feed a small army! (Look up the recipe - it's delicious ;) Getting your protein from legumes (which fix their own nitrogen and so don't need much fertilizer) is so much better for the planet than getting it from meat. And they have lots of dried legumes - lentils, beans, etc. For other household items they stock more eco-friendly versions of what you might find in Tesco or Lidl (e.g., Ecover laundry detergent). Lots of toiletries (I think I saw some bamboo toothbrushes) and other essentials - will have to go back and take photos of their shelves!

A great longstanding resource (5/5 Green Stars) As mentioned…read morein my review of M&S: most of my Drogheda shopping breaks down as follows: * Fruit and veg in various places (wherever I can find organic and packaging-free food) * Bits and pieces from Only Natural * Goodies and a few staples from Marks & Spencer I often come in to Only Natural for specific things. Sometime it's a vegetable-based soap - an alternative to the ubiquitous Dove soap (made from palm oil, sketchily sourced by Unilever). Sometimes it's Arborio rice or a good vegetable stock to make risotto. I sometimes crave the Bombay mix that's sold there, or the vegetarian pâté (so good on toast!). Often, once I'm there, I'll find something else that looks attractive. The main downside for me is that, depending on who's behind the counter, service can be icy for some reason that I haven't quite figured out... I'm giving Only Natural 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact for the following reasons: * I would say that virtually everything in the shop is plant-based. In case y'all don't know by now, switching to a plant-based diet is the best shot that we have of saving this planet from climate catastrophe. * Almost all of the brands that I've come across in the store are pretty ethical (fair trade, sustainably farmed, socially responsible companies, etc.) * It's not easy to keep a business going when the prices of ethical items are so much higher than the cheapo alternatives in Aldi and Lidl, etc. Props to Only Natural for managing to supply Drogheda with alternatives for so long. * The owners are pretty well informed on social and environmental issues & can advise customers on purchases. * Some "bulk" items (grains, dried beans, snacks, etc.) are packaged in minimal plastic bags. Would be great if, someday, customers could bring their own bags or containers.

I do also like some of the prepared food from M&S, but I generally prefer to cook. Which goodies? Well, beyond the mince pies, crackers and chocolate biscuits, I like the potato farls from M&S and think they serve as a good example of why I choose food from there. Tesco, Lidl, etc., all sell potato farls, but they generally contain palm oil of dubious origin. Similarly, there are lots of tempting-looking cookies and cakes at Aldi and Lidl, etc., but I always hesitate to buy them because of ethical concerns over ingredients like palm oil, cacao, eggs, etc. But that brings up another point: the cakes etc., from Aldi and Lidl may be "tempting-looking" but often they disappoint. Bakewell slices from "Holly Lane" are sickly sweet and barely worth eating. Sure, the prices at Aldi and Lidl are low, but M&S sells close-to-expiration items that are around 50% off - shopping here is pretty affordable when you're flexible about what you buy! And it really is a necessary solution to food waste - most of the other stores just trash food at the expiration date. But even at regular prices, I'd much rather buy from M&S - most of the items are more ethical and just taste way better than equivalent items from Lidldi. Several of the items from M&S look boring but actually really good - the almond cookies are a good example. I would never have tried them until a friend recommended them, and now I several items taste much better than the packaging would suggest - they even made tasty rice cakes! But a major reason to support M&S is because the company tries (a lot harder than Aldidl) to do the right thing. Here's more about that..... I'm giving Marks and Spencer 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact for the following reasons: * M&S pledged to double sales of vegetarian and vegan products by 2024. This is really key for dealing with climate change. * A carbon neutral business (in M&S's own operations) since 2012 * 13 M&S stores have a packaging-free refillable grocery concept, Fill Your Own. * M&S aims to have 100% of food packaging being recyclable by next year. * M&S received a good score from the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare. * Ethical Consumer gives M&S its best rating for supply chain management. * Sourcing of cacoa, coffee, and palm oil (when used) is better than most supermarket chains. There is still room for improvement, though... * All workers in the M&S supply chain have the right to join a union and engage in collective bargaining. * Supplier factories are audited at least annually by third party, independent auditors * Back in 2015, M&S was the only major retailer to have committed to implement a process to ensure that clothing suppliers are able to pay workers a fair living wage (e.g., in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka). * As of 2019, M&S sources 100% of its cotton from more sustainable sources (Better Cotton initiative). * M&S sells a lot of food items at around 50% discount when close to expiration, helping to deal with food waste.
