I had a wonderful experience and highly recommend if your pet needs to see an eye specialist! Back in April/May my dog Korra scratched her eye while playing, resulting in an ulcer. After a few visits to our regular vet, they were concerned it wasn't healing so they referred us to Animal Eye Care. Dr. Chen and the staff there were all amazing. He diagnosed the issue and made some recommendations for next steps. In addition to the care itself, I really appreciated his consideration around the cost of visits and procedures and rather than advising procedures without regard to costs or true necessity, he was conservative in his recommendations and candid with the cost and time which I truly appreciated. Most of my experiences with vets over the years has been quite the opposite, resulting in large vet bills that I questioned were truly necessary. Our dog Riley had a mass on his eyelid that needed to be removed. He also has inflammatory bowel disease and acid reflux so we were concerned about the possibility of him having reflux and aspirating during surgery. We live on the peninsula and called an opthalmologist near us first. We got a really bad feeling about the place from the initial phone call and reviews, so decided to drive across the bay to see Dr Chen at Animal Eye Care. So very glad that we did! The staff is friendly, welcoming to both pets and pet parents and highly professional. I was able to go in with Riley to his pre surgery appointment and talk with Dr Chen. I found him to be compassionate, caring and knowledgeable. Riley had his surgery this morning and all is well. He's home and resting. They were great on every level. Sadly my dog was attacked and had damage to her eye. We were lucky that there was a cancellation and we called at the right time to get the same day appt. He examined her eye on Tuesday afternoon and was able to do her surgery the next morning. The goal of Animal Eye Care is crystal clear: to make as much money as possible. Animal welfare comes second, and customer service limps in at a distinct third. I came to this conclusion after a visit with long conversations with the vet, vet tech, many receptionists and, finally, the manager. * Did I pay the $330 to make and hold an appointment? Yes. I love my cat and want her to get the help she needs. But follow ups, I was told during my appointment, are $200. Oh, and medication is not included, which wouldn't be such an issue if the price for an appointment wasn't so high. During the visit I was sent a text that reads like a hostage note, along the lines of, "Pay us $187 NOW for medication before we give you your cat back." * When I protested to the vet tech, she attacked me on a personal level. She really laid into me, including calling me out on the disability I've had since birth. * What did I walk away with? An envelope, about 12 pieces of paper, no medication or help for my kitty, and a bad taste in my mouth. All that for the low, low cost of $330. I brought my 15 yo Shihtzu, Bebeto, here for his corneal ulcer to be treated and Dr. Chen and the vet tech was amazing. They did a corneal debridement and we had a 2 week recheck which at that time he didn't heal so Dr. Chen offered to wait an additional 2 weeks to give him more time. His corneal ulcer was still present unfortunately at the time of the recheck. We talked about future options for what to do next. Dr. Chen was so kind and responded to all my questions via email in a timely manner and explained our options with surgery going forward. Fast forward to the day of surgery Dr examined his eye once more and called me saying his eye actually looks good and he doesn't see the need to go forward with the surgery since he is comfortable with no squinting! My Airedale Tesla was treated by Dr. Davis and her staff for many years for eye issues. She was my favorite vet. Before I took Tesla to her I didn't even know that dogs went to eye specialists. She and her staff were amazing-always kind and gentle. After some years of treatment, Tesla eventually needed eye surgery to remove her eye. Just as Dr. Davis predicted, she bounced back and adjusted fine to being a one-eyed dog. When Tesla died recently, all of the staff and Dr. Davis sent me a card. Dr. Davis wrote a personal note about what an honor it was to take care of Tesla. Going to Animal Eye Care was the best choice I could've possibly made for my pet. My three-year-old dog, Mila, went from perfectly healthy to an assumed eye infection to permanently blind within the span of three days. When the normal vets in my area weren't able to help me, Animal Eye Care was able to see me on the very same day. They charged $330 upfront to hold a space for my dog, but that was reasonable considering the speed and efficiency they offered. Dr. Hamilton was Mila's doctor. She was very kind and professional, and the initial eye exam went very well. Dr. Hamilton told me what I already suspected (that my dog's eye would need to be removed), but she was very tactful in her delivery and so reassuring when I worried that Mila's eye loss had somehow been my fault. We scheduled enucleation the very next week. The front desk communicated very well and it was clear when surgery would be, how much it would cost, and what my expectations as a patient should be. Unfortunately, Mila's condition rapidly worsened and I didn't know if she would be able to make it to her original surgery date. I called in the middle of the night, long after hours, and was transferred to Dr. Hamilton's personal phone. Mila's surgery was moved to the very next day. Dr. Hamilton's surgery skills are spectacular. Mila went from suffering so much she could not drink water back to her normal self immediately after surgery. There were no issues; surgery was quick and I was able to pick up Mila right away. Both the doctor and the front desk at Animal Eye Care made sure to communicate with me at pick-up and over the next few weeks regarding aftercare. Suture removal went just as well! Animal Eye Care is also great about prescription refills and general questions about your animal post-surgery. I felt like they really cared. All of this was as California was shutting down due to coronavirus. I can't imagine how well this office operates under normal conditions. The total cost for Mila's surgery (initial visit and medication included) ended up being just over $3k. It was pricey, but absolutely worth it. I wouldn't hesitate to come here again, although I hope in the future it won't be in emergency. read more

Nothing but great things to say about this place. Dr. Davis and Dr. Chen have been amazing to work with when our corgi had a sudden onset glaucoma/uveitis/and a detached retina. They saw us within 2 days (which was rare considering I called 6 other places in the area and everyone else was booked 2 weeks out). We live in Stockton and it was worth driving 2+ hours every few weeks to get the quality care they have provided for us. Their staff is friendly, prompt, and super helpful. Amy has been our main person of reference for 6 months and the entire staff has always gone above and beyond to respond and be helpful for anything we've ever needed like med refills, appointment accommodations, etc. The Center did not do the eye removal surgery that we eventually needed to have done, but they explained our biopsy results thoroughly and what to expect in the future for our follow up appointments. Thank you so much for going above and beyond for our sweet boy! ***The Center does require a prepayment to hold your appointment spot, and it is not cheap. This may seem silly and annoying but it saves your appointment and gives clients who really need services (like we did) an open spot. Like all animal medicine and care facilities, it can be expensive but you get what you pay for. This place is all about quality and unfortunately it does cost a bit. But it's no more expensive than other animal eye places from what I've researched. We were lucky and incredibly thankful to have pet insurance to pay the bulk of what we went through, but I would do it all over again if it meant my our corgi being happy and health. read more

If your pet has an eye emergency, please save yourself time and money and bring your dog here rather than going to other vets. It's expensive but your pet will get the best treatment. I had to bring in my English bulldog for a corneal ulcer which later ended up rupturing. It was the worst time for a pet owner seeing my dog suffer, but Dr. Chen saved his eye with surgery, and his staff really took care of him. Dr. Chen was quick to get back to me with questions through email or by phone, and really cared for my dog. If I know something is up with my dogs eyes, I will bring him here instead of going somewhere else. read more

Extremely hard to get appointments. I had to reschedule due to my work schedule and they weren't accommodating about moving it. I called 3 days in advance. The next available was 3 months out!!!! The doctors at this practice have chose the wrong field, they should've been attorneys/lawyers (con artist, salesman type) taking advantage of their position, due to lack of competition in the area. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, shame on you. I advise anyone who needs an eye specialist for their pet to look elsewhere and take a longer drive, all the other initial visits with eye specialists were about half the price, if not less. read more

Their after service is terrible. My dog needs refill his medicines, so I called one week before it runs out and paid right the way. After one week waiting I didn't receive anything so I called again, they told me somehow our email went to trash so they didn't know I already paid, but they will send it right the way. 5 days later, I received the medicines, but missing one.... I double check my order, it is very clear three items, however one shows quantity 0. I guess they may just missed that one... So I called them again, and told the girl what happened for my orders. She kept telling me, I didn't order the missed medicine for THREE TIMES, so I asked her if so why my receipt shows that item but quantity 0? She told me she doesn't know... Excuse me??? After that I nicely asked she if she can reorder one for me ASAP?coz my dog needs his medicine. She said yes. Guest what.... Two days passed I still didn't receive any e-mail or message about my order... I do like the doctor, she is nice, and it is ok that they missed my payment email at first place. However when it is very obviously it is their mistake, just admit it! How hard it is??? She took a comprehensive history and when we met Dr. Chen (who was also amazing), he was well briefed and I didn't have to repeat anything. I was thrilled they had an opening (last minute cancellation) and my baby was treated well. Dr. Hamilton perform surgery on my dog to remove a small mass on the surface of my dog's eyelid. What was a simple surgery turned disastrous when after the surgery I noticed his eye was foggy and glazed. She was so slow response to my to my questions. It took 5 days for her to tell me that I should rush him to the emergency. He became blind from an infection and almost lost his eye. Not once did she call or even care to be present at our many follow up visits. Dr smith had to pick up her slack and be there for the 5-10 follow up visits. The least she could've done was to call or stop and take some form of ownership in the work that she did. You don't just do surgery and be done with it when a client calls concerned that something is not right Three months later my other dog had the same issue. . Dr. Kim in San Francisco perform the surgery without the fancy contact lens to supposedly protect the eye and that was a complete success. There are a lot of other vet out there who care about the work they do. Dr. Hamilton did the operation But had no concerned at all about the outcome of it. When my dog's right eye was not responding to light, his vet made a referral to an animal ophthalmologist located a few minutes from where I live. However, I decided instead to do my own research and took him to Animal Eye Care despite the 40 minute drive away. It turns out my poor doggy has iris atrophy in his right eye, a condition that should not get any worse but makes it difficult to keep his eye open in bright light. Dr. Friedman recommended I get him a pair of dog sunglasses (no joke)! So I ordered a pair online even though I was about 99% sure he would not wear it on his face for more than 5 seconds. Of course he didn't. But at least we got some cute pictures out of it. read more

Dr. Friedman and her wonderful staff saved Buster's right eye!!! I was referred here when Dr. Anderson (greatest vet in the world) discovered Buster had an eye trauma almost to the point of him losing his eye. They told me to come over immediately, evaluated, and performed surgery on Buster in the same morning/day. The staff was so kind and made Buster comfortable. They inquired about his special needs (such as a sensitivity to anesthetic) and called me as soon as he awoke. They provided me with two f/u appointments, plenty of antibiotics, and a very stylish cone that Buster is now wearing. For such a scary morning, I feel so good about Dr. Friedman and her clinic. Right before Christmas, I took my dog Mimi to her regular vet because I noticed her eyes were a little cloudy. Her vet said she might have cataracts and that we should take her to a specialist. She recommended Dr. Friedman at Animal Eye Care in Fremont. We took Mimi to Dr. Friedman and she confirmed that Mimi has cataracts in both eyes. Mimi is only about 2 1/2 years old, so it was something that she inherited. Being a rescue dog, we know little about her life before we adopted her. I was devastated but also willing to do whatever it takes to restore her vision. After a series of appointments and tests, Mimi got the green light for surgery. Her surgery was successful and she's recovering as expected. Dr. Friedman and her staff were top notch and very helpful. As far as prices go, it wasn't cheap. But I will not put a price on my dogs health. Thankfully, Animal Eye Care accepts Care Credit, a type of credit card specifically for health and veterinary care. I took my 16 year old cat here because his bad eye developed some new symptoms and my vet suggested it was time to see a specialist. When I first called they said they couldn't get me an appointment for 6 days. But the receptionist sounded worried about what I described and promised to call me if there were any cancellations sooner. So instead of charging me the $75 emergency care fee, I got a phone call 3 hours later saying they could squeeze me in the very next day at 10:30AM! I was extremely grateful. My cat has been "red flagged" at two previous vets because he bites and thrashes. But at Animal Eye Care, they wrapped him up in a "cat burrito" of fleece, and performed a series of tests in quick succession. I was very impressed! In the end, I couldn't afford to have the eye removed even though they said they could fit me in that very day. I was very anxious about NOT having the procedure, but they insisted it would probably be fine if he kept it. They also gave me a list of things to look for so it wouldn't become urgent and some ointment to treat it for pain. It was all very low-pressure and reassuring. read more

I really don't have much to say about the medical care for my dog; it was adequate as far as I could tell. I took my dog in the first time on the recommendation of my regular vet. I was told over the phone while making the appointment that it would be about $250 max. After waiting a half an hour past my appointment time they saw my dog, seemed to do well with him and gave me some print-outs explaining his condition (that was helpful). When I went to pay the total was $376. $125 for the exam, $28 for fluorescent stain, $38 for tonometry, $138 for eye culture and $47 for meds. Then I was told to come back in 3 weeks to see how the medication was working. At that time they said that they normally charge $125 for a follow-up exam but if you go within a certain amount of time it's $48. But they also wanted to do another culture for $138. So I show up for the exam at the appointed time and wait and wait and wait. Half hour out in the lobby with all the other people waiting. Then another half an hour in the exam room where no one popped in to tell me when I might expect someone. So after an hour goes by I walk out telling them to cancel my appointment. I can understand if emergency cases come in and occupy the doctor, but at the half hour mark they should tell the client that they don't know when the doctor can get to you and offer to let you wait or reschedule the appointment. Not expect you to wait there indefinately. That shows a lack of consideration for your clients time. Anyway, I left and called my regular vet and said that the ointment seemed to work on my dogs eye infection. If I see him scratching at it again I'll take him back to my regular vet and if he still thinks a specialist needs to be seen I'll ask him to recommend a facility other than Animal Eye Care. read more

Dr Smith and all staff there have treated me and my pet Lily so well. It was hard finding out my kitty has feline Agenesis but they put me at ease and gave me a good understanding of her hereditary issue. Dr Smith explained to me all the options Lily has to live the best life possible with her eye issue . We went forward with a skin graft surgery. I was very nervous but the staff kept me well informed of her well being and Dr Smith also got a chance to talk to me over the phone to give me updates . She prepared me very well for her after care, she also let me know in advance it might be a big 'scary' the way she looks after surgery. Wich I'm glad she took a picture before hand so I can be prepared and not freak out. She was in no pain, and I can tell they treated her well. We did follow up appointments and she has had a great recovery. Although her condition can never be perfected I continue to bring her in to get her follow ups and care for her eyes here . The from desk is always professional and seem to remember me and Lily every time we come in to check in . Dr. Friedman was not overly chatty, but knew what she was doing and removed a mass from my employers' dogs' eye with expert precision. The entire staff rolled around the office in a comforting choreographed manner that made me feel completely secure that everything was being handled correctly, efficiently, and with compassion. The only drawback is that the time frame of the eye appointments before you can vary from 10 minutes to 45 minutes and above, so you may have to wait awhile. It was nice to chat with the other dog owners there, and the receptionist could not have been more helpful, pleasant, or efficient. I hope to NOT have to take any other animals here, because it is usually for some dire or crisis situation...but if I do, I know it will be a great experience. Dr. Friedman was great!! My chinchilla had been to her regular vet for 5 times, and her eyes didn't get any better, but Dr. Friedman cured her eye very quickly. Dr. Friedman is very knowledge in her field (consider a chinchilla is a really rare patient for her). My only concern is the price, they are pretty expensive, and she wanted us to recheck and recheck a few times. And she is usually overbooked, so the wait time gets very long even with an appointment. I presented my pup here after trying the usual treatment for an ulcer and it's unwillingness to go away. The staff were super helpful with getting an appointment and very professional. Dr. Davis did her exam on Max and thoroughly explained why the ulcer was not healing and suggested treatment options. Only giving two stars because the vet did diagnose my dog who is almost 13 properly. With that being said their treatment recommendation was wrong. My dog had an ulcer in her eye and I was told that I would need to have a 700 dollar procedure done for the type of ulcer and she would also need a two week follow up which would be another 200 dollars. They said that the type of ulcer she had hardly ever heals on it's own. After receiving this information they also informed me that some dogs need the procedure twice (1800 dollars). When I stressed that I didn't have that kind of money they were quick to offer me an application for care credit. They made me feel terrible that I didn't schedule an appt that day and that I wanted to give her a chance to heal in her own. Long story short I am glad that I gave her a couple weeks to heal on her own because when I followed up at our regular vet her eye was completely healed. Not only was this irritating enough they neglected to mention Studies show that cotton swab debridement alone heals an average of 50% of indolent corneal ulcers. This could have been a much more cost effective and less invasive procedure than what they were offering. I did some research myself when I got home. Luckily we didn't have to do anything but antibiotics. Lastly, our appt was over an hour late which isn't a huge deal but what seemed weird was how they keep Starbucks gift cards on hand which tells me that is a common occurrence. read more
