I made sure to set him up for success with all the training I could give him since he was already 2 years old approx. I want to bring awareness to give dogs time to adjust, my dog took about a full year to show his true personality and even then he has improved over the years. I adopted him 3 years ago and he has kept on growing in trusting people more and becoming more confident. Give dogs a chance only if you are willing to give them time, they are 10000% worth the investment of time and effort. Also, donate to your animal shelters when you can! Their facility is bright, clean, open, and welcoming. Founded in 1965, Animal Humane is New Mexico's oldest animal welfare organization, and it shows in the care and dedication they provide.When I adopted her, the process was simple, efficient, and fairly priced. Lately, I've been thinking about how I can give back to my community, and the first place that came to mind was Animal Humane. I signed up to volunteer through their website, and they responded quickly--I was able to attend an orientation within two weeks. The orientation was incredibly informative, not just about the organization's mission, but also about the many ways volunteers can get involved. Since then, I've been volunteering in their on-site low-income pet food distribution center, and it's been amazing to see their mission in action. I had a very tasteless experience this would of been my 3 time SAVING A LIFE here 1 dog 1 cat looking for another cat unfortunately my time here was cutt very short due to the inappropriate behavior from staff I brought a friend of mine to help me pick a cat well I know they do background checks to background check a friend just coming along I never heard of . I believe my friend was racial profiled cause of his tattoo and singled out , I seen the employee check his background on her computer facing us then proceeded to call more employees over to gossip and laugh and look thru all th details of the background check nothing had to deal with animals . We were there to save a life but to belittled , gossiped about me , having his background looked into every detail for 30 minutes and call more people to laugh and look into also is so invasive and disrespectful. I'm very disappointed in th actions of the staff I believe cause he had tattoo he was racial profiled and looked into when he wasn't even apart of the adoption and doesn't live with me.the background had nothing to do with animals every one has a past dont mean they should of mistreated, gossiped about , and belittled due to it . Especially when they're not the ones adopting but helping choose a life to save , do better staff ur actions are very disgusting and next time we'll be confronted right then and there read more

I absolutely love Animal Humane and how they help animals along with some of their events like the annual race. I had adopted a dog back in July for my son who was wonderful, however and unfortunately, I have had very severe medical issues from October through currently that left me unable and unsure if I could care for him. I contacted Animal Humane and they were wonderful offering services and help if I could use it. Unfortunately, due to my current condition, I felt that it was cruel to keep a young wonderful puppy that I am unable to provide for in the way that he needs like taking walks, playing etc. without worrying of being knocked over, getting hurt, not being able to walk, or having more hospital stays or unresponsive bouts without being able to be woken up even in a medical facility. They were wonderful in helping get him rehomed and I hope that if I do get better and in a few years to perhaps get another dog with my son that would be smaller and more manageable. I truly appreciate their assistance during this time and even though I felt absolutely awful and was in tears during the process. They were not shameful or judgemental which helped me so much during this process. I wish that Luca could have stayed in our home and that his new home is wonderful and able to give him the life he deserves. read more

My first visit to Animal Humane New Mexico (AHNM) was the day they had a special event for Cats. "Caturday" - a Cat Cafe and Cat Craft Market all for the benefit of the kitties in their care. The front desk seemed to be a little uninformed about this special event, even though crafters were setting up on the patio. I toured the cat condos and the group rooms for multiple cats & kittens. I was totally surprised at how few cats & kittens they had. Where are all the stray cats that other cities have in their Humane Shelters? Just seemed very strange. The few kittens and 1/2 a dozen grown cats all seemed well taken care of - well fed and clean. Was I missing something? Were there cats that were being nursed back to health that were in seclusion and not available for adoption? Adoption fees were reduced to $10 for grown cats and $25 for kittens. A good introduction to Animal Humane New Mexico, but just an intro. I will go back and see the puppies and dogs before I make a final judgement. read more

Sooo bitterly disappointed with this place that used to be an amazingly friendly and great second hand store. Lets run through what the exact problems are: 1. They slowly stopped having access to a public restroom. This is a common problem lately and store managers are blaming theft and homelessness; but the reality is a lot of older folk who are on fixed incomes and may need to use a bathroom more frequently, won't shop there anymore in case they need to go! 2. Special Deals: They used to have at least two tag colors on sale every week, one fifty percent off, the other a dollar. Now they have a dollar rack of pretty useless clothes and 25% off one section or tag color. 3. Shop times: It was understandable that they wanted to close up shop a little earlier during the winter. Closing time went from 6.00pm to 5.00pm. But this is now all year round. Staff justify this by saying it's a safety and security issue because of their location, security and homelessness. Those of us who finish work at 4.30pm or 5.00pm can't stop by there on our way home anymore, theres too little or no time. 4. Products on sale: Prices for everything appear to have doubled, in some cases tripled. I know prices went up accross the country this last year, but isn't inflation supposed to be coming down now? China/porcelain is still on display, however...even valuable antique collectable china is covered in plastic tape that damages the china by removing any gold leaf decor, and making the china more vulnerable to cracks and breaking. Several of us have suggested they use rubber bands or cling film or place such items behind the glass counter, but they still cover stuff in plastic tape and place items on regular display. Nope, staff are sadly still ruining valuable pieces by using sticky tape... 5. clothes: T.shirts that once cost aproximately $3.00 are now $6.00 and blouses that used to be $4.00 or $5.00 are now $8.00. Sweaters, night-dresses, pants and jeans used to be $4.00 or $5.00 and are now typically $8.00. Just hope someone at the top cares enough to bring the old environment back so they don't lose more customers... they may not be willing to lower prices, but at least bring back the special offers, and stop ruining valuables that have been donated in good faith. Oh, and maybe talk to the City about safety and homelessness... and have the city help with providing a working and accessible restroom?!! Unlike the doggies we love, and you claim to support...the public can't and shouldn't have to lift a leg at a lampost to go! read more

So I cannot speak to the adoption center or process, as I have not adopted an animal here. However their training staff has been excellent. We just enrolled Roxie Lasagna in puppy classes and she is having a blast and we cannot wait till the next class. Unlike some other training centers in the city Animal Humane actually encourages bringing the kids and whole family and having them all participate. This is a welcome change as it feels like more training the people not the doggos. I highly recommend signing up for a class (like the Perfect Pub Pet at Boxing Bear or Tractor) read more

UPDATE: a few days ago, I posted a "1-star" review based on a negative interaction with the Admissions Manager. Yesterday, she called me (at my request), she responded with a 2nd email which was ever-so-much better, giving me the REAL reason she couldn't accept my surrender puppy, and giving me some alternative shelters to try. She also apologized profusely for HER mistake in the first response, promised to revise her practice (slow down, answer thoughtfully) --and to review the situation with her team. Our search began here! We loved spending time with #Quincy the cat! Meow! He is adorable and loving! Our animal tech was awesome! It was a busy day at the Animal Humane Society but she she still had time to give us a rundown of Quincy's loving attributes! While we spent time in the bonding room we were able to ask questions about the cats and the process of adoption! We also toured the canine area and about saw 15+dogs. All adorable! The facility is neat and clean and it has a retail store that sells items for newly adopted pets. Items such as collars and toys for your pet. When you first walk into the canine Department there's a sign in sheet. Once you sign in your basic info the person at the desk will explain to you where the areas are for the dogs and cats. Was overcharged by over $100. for little abused dog. Was charged "purebred" price when dog is obviously a mix and website description clearly stated "mixed breed". (charged for Papillon, which is predominantly white; this dog has NO white). Was told dog is 5 yrs or younger..ha! she is graying around muzzle & eyes. AFTER I paid the fee, was told that dog has dental disease & teeth could not be cleaned; upon examination, my vet says this is not true & he can do the cleaning (big $$). Dog was not healed from spay & not all shots had been given. I had to pay my vet for the vaccinations. She was clearly not ready for adoption. Also denied veteran discount. The Older Lady with short Brown hair is VERY RUDE! It's not worth the trip for food, don't waste your time. I feel VERY INTIMIDATED! I FEEL LIKE SHES A RASIST! I know I've been part of the problem, but I'm also part of the solution. We have some issues with our best friends here in New Mexico. I honestly believe that parenting should require an application and licensing process, something mandatory for every prospective parent-to-be, to certify the basics: clean home, decent food, caring people. The same should be mandated for animal ownership. So many pets, and dogs in particular, wander the streets of this town neglected by people who never cared a lick for their welfare, it's such a shame. We have a lot of strays in ABQ. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to parent. That said, I'm responsible for two of our strays. Over the years two of my cats have disappeared; one just ran away and the other was likely coyote food in my north valley 'hood. Another was hit by a car, shame on me for living near Lead avenue. But when I've needed a new best friend I've always turned to Animal Humane and obviously I've enjoyed my picks of the litter because I keep going back. My last cat, Benny, was chosen by one of the employees and she was right, he grew up to be fantastic. Animal Humane is the best for pet adoption in the state, hands down. The new facility on Virginia is marvelous, featuring little pet condos surrounding the waiting area where, with just a couple minutes to spare, you'll likely fall in love with a new furry friend. They also have plenty of vaccination and spay/neutering programs throughout the year which make pet ownership affordable to anyone - and this includes people who shouldn't own pets in the first place. But what are you going to do? Make them apply for licensing, or something? How inhumane. read more

I give the animals five stars! The man at the front desk gets no stars however. His tone was snide. We saw some really cute furry friends, but thought it best to go elsewhere. I am so impressed with what has been done with this facility. Everyone was super friendly and our friends left with the perfect pup. What more can you ask for. Going to the shelter can be one of the most depressing experiences but all the dogs seemed to be in good spirits, well taken care of and loved. The people who worked there seemed to really know all the animals well and helped us find the perfect match. While waiting for our friend to get there we had a chance to see lots of dogs coming and going on their walks while sitting outside on one of their lovely benches. It was very nice to see that the dogs get lots of attention. When we went through and looked at the dogs it took no time for someone to bring out the dog and let them have some one on one time with us. While we would get to know the dog the workers would give us some background on the dog as well as fill us in on what kind of personality they have and what would be good for them. I loved that they sold lots of items that you can use to set yourself up for your new family member. The prices on all of the things seemed a little lower than what you would pay at the local pet stores. Even though my husband and I were only there to help a friend pick out a new dog we left with some new harnesses for our dogs to help them on our walks. When we got home we weren't too sure on how they were supposed to fit so out of frustration we took them and our dogs down to the shelter to ask for some assistance fitting them. I wasn't sure how they would respond to this but they were so lovely. We had help properly fitting them and the workers were all loving on our dogs. Very good customer service! Overall it was such a wonderful experience and I recommend anyone who is thinking of adopting to go to this shelter. My wife and I went to Animal Humane to adopt a dog and spent a couple of hours with the dog and workers at the shelter including introducing our elderly Tibetan Terrier. We liked the dog, felt we could work with the dog's PTSD and made arrangements to come back for the dog the next day in the afternoon. When we arrived,we were told the dog was no longer available because he had snapped at one of the handlers. The manager was both rude and abrupt and i noticed that none of the workers that we had spent time with the previous day would speak with us or even look at us or the Manager. We were told that we could not adopt because we had arrived after noon. On the whole, I got the feeling that the manager was overbearing and intimidating to both staff and customers. read more

We came in to see the dogs and my husband politely said we'd come by to see what puppies (he calls all dogs puppies) were available and the red head at the front snapped at him that they don't have puppies. At one point I asked my 2 children to sit in the lobby chairs so I could look at the available dogs on their computer and the same red head sat and glared at my kids like they had no right to be in the lobby. She made my husband and I so uncomfortable that we decided to leave. I have heard so many great things about this place so I was appalled at how unwelcoming the staff is. read more

This place feels low key RACIST. Do not recommend to visit if you are NOT WHITE. Staff comments reek of bias and made me uncomfortable. Chose to adopt at Animal Welfare (the city shelter) instead. City shelter adoption fees are only $25 for dogs, as opposed to Animal Humane $100+. I asked about the price discrepancy and was informed that Animal Humane is private. Also be aware that Animal Humane charges more for dogs they deem to be more desirable/possibly purebred instead of having a flat adoption rate. I have been calling all week to get my cat seen and there has not even been a call back. I feel especially frustrated because I shop at their thrift store at least once a week and thought this was a good place to contribute my dollars to. However, when I asked in the thrift store if they would communicate my feedback to the Vet clinic, I was told no. The retail manager, Janis, (according to her tag) was training another girl and neither of them had skills of listening or empathy for my situation. I was really turned off by their level of disconnection. I was also surprised since the staff has usually been kind and helpful. I called to check about the availability of a dog online. I was advised to come in bring my dog to do a meet-and-greet and the dog was available for adoption. I drive an hour to get there and when I come in they tell me that the dog has been adopted to a volunteer and that they're sorry that I should call First next time. I did call First. So i look at the website again for a different dog while I'm there and I see another one I'm possibly interested in and I asked to see it and they quote me a 45 minute wait time to see the dog. This is like the worst run animal shelter I've ever been to or experience I definitely recommend staying away from this place if you value your time. read more

We went to Animal Humane to adopt a dog that was on the site He was there We spent the day with the dog and staff and after that we spent a lot of time with the Behavioural Specialist Paul Staff is wonderful They are dedicated and really care about the animals and the humans who are adopting This puppy was abused and it was obvious This puppy suffered and suffers PTSD We understood this and were comfortable with adopting him I give the facility one (1) star because of management On reading other reviews problems with the manager were expressed by many people adopting My experience was very upsetting and to this date (our) dog is still at the facility Historically for some reason we had to return the next day in order to take him home He was placed on a hold for us We told Paul and Delila that we could not return until the afternoon and they said that was fine The next day while on our way I called to say that we would be at the facility soonjjj Staff seened confused. It was time..... Time to get that addition to our family. So, I took my girlfriend and son to look at dogs. I had been looking on their website for months and finally found one that I wanted to look at. We told them which furry pup that we wanted to look at and they lead us to the meeting area while they went to get the guy. So, here he comes and boy is he a hyper dog, knocked my boy down a couple times and was just full of energy. But just a little too much for us. So another dog was suggested. Enter Mojo..... This guy is full of energy too, jumping running and all of that stuff that dogs should do. Then after a moment, he settled down and just wanted love. He won our heart. I only had to check that my daughter liked him too. So they put a "hold" on him for us. We immediately ran and picked up my daughter from school to bring her back to meet Mojo. So, back to the same area and the wait again. He ran in and went straight to my daughter to meet the new person..... SOLD! This was back in January. I waited this long, just to see how things would go. Mojo is a very friendly and popular dog around town now and such a joy. read more

I adopted Luke because I lost my Standard Poodle Peaches on 7/12/18. I am a 100% disabled veteran and have always had a 4 legged friend in my home when ever possible. Luke is a Black Lab mix and was given up by his owner so I got some additional information about him from the surrender documents. Luke has been a great dog so far. He is very friendly and loving. He has adapted to my environment and seems happy to be here with me. I cannot say enough nice things about this organization and the staff I worked with during the adoption process. We have a rescue dog with behavior problems. We scheduled an appointment t with a behavior specialist. After two sessions we are very happy with the consultation and how the trainer treats us and our pup with respect. The suggestions for dealing with his behavior are working ! read more

I have taken my puppy to puppy playtime on Saturday mornings and she is learning sooo much! I also have her enrolled in puppy preschool with Alana and she is so good. What I am learning really works and the training is done in such a way as it makes it easy to learn and ask questions!
