Was pregnant and wanted to schedule a checkup. She would only see me at 9-10weeks. Was scheduled for a 1 hour visit. Came in with my husband, as soon as the ultrasound was up we knew something was wrong. She said there was no heartbeat and immediately went into recommending a D&C. Our appointment was 5 Min long. I wanted to take a pill and she strongly rec against that and said it looked like a possible molar pregnancy. I asked her about risks of D&C including scarring and her exact words were "for you? There's no risk of that" We scheduled the D&C and she completed it. At the post op she said everything looked fine and that she herself had had a miscarriage and it's only my first one and it'll be okay. After 6weeks of no period (and regular periods my entire life like clockwork) I reached out to her. She said maybe I have pcos and wanted to put me on progesterone and do additional tests. Everything came back normal and she still wanted to put me on progesterone. After going on that, it did not change anything with my period and she continued to say nothing was wrong with the d&c. Months passed, I kept checking with her and she didn't refer me or recommend anything else. My period continued to not come for 6+ months. I did research myself and went to a specialist Reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist who confirmed that I had scarring from the D&C procedure. She did a procedure to remove scar tissue and my period came back but has been light ever since. The specialist said I have permanent damage from the D&C. I updated Dr Rao about what happened and she never responded even though she had viewed the message. She does not seem to really care about her patients. She also does not seem knowledgeable and is not thorough in her diagnoses, findings, or recommendations. Would not recommend her to anyone read more

Dr. Rao is a caring, professional, intelligent and extremely capable OBGYN. I've gone through 2 miscarriages for which she performed both D&Cs. Due to miscommunication from my insurance, I almost had to use a different doctor for the second one, which made me really anxious - fortunately, the 2nd insurance rep I spoke with cleared things up so I was able to go back to Dr. Rao... I went into the surgery without any concern and came out 100% fine thanks, again, to Dr. Rao! read more

I've had a really great experience with Dr. Rao overall. I've felt very supported by her. She has shared good referrals and suggestions with me. I recently had surgery, was a bit nervous about it and she took time to talk through everything and was very available to me afterwards. I had a small concern and she made time to see me that afternoon. I'm still healing and really appreciate going through this experience with someone who seems to be very knowledgeable and cares to make sure the patient is comfortable with what is going on. read more

Dr. Rao was knowledgeable and conducted all of the necessary tests required for my wife's pregnancy (almost a year ago now). Three stars for that. However, over the course of the pregnancy she slowly became more impatient and easily irked. My wife was anxious, as this was our first child and the baby was in the 11th or 12th percentile in weight. At one point, when my wife asked her to go over a few things again, she responded, "I just went over them with you." That is not how you respond. You go over what you said, however many times it takes to make the patient feel at ease. During the hospital stay, it was quite evident none of the nurses liked Dr. Rao. Her reputation preceded her apparently. When we told the nurses who our doctor was, they literally asked us why we chose her, with a puzzled look. It was clear when she arrived for the delivery that none of them were fond of her. I feel we disturbed a previous engagement she had for that day because she actively tried to persuade us a few weeks earlier to choose another day to come in and in fact pushed our day anyways a few days prior. There was also no follow up scheduled for post delivery a month or so after, when there normally would have been. We had no issues with that during the pregnancy, but immediately afterward I suppose we weren't all that important anymore. She pretty much washed her hands of us and didn't even receive a call from her to see why an appointment wasn't made. Overall, she's very impersonal and comes off as arrogant sometimes. We had better experiences with other doctors we saw through the course of the pregnancy. read more

She was incredibly patient with me while I hemmed and hawed over dates of my c-section. At the end of my journey I was sad not to see her every few weeks. Dr. Rao is the OB for my second baby. I visited her starting from the very early pregnancy till my labor. She is professional and she listens to what I want. My labor started at 1am in the night. She arrived at sequoia hospital 5 minutes after my nurse called her. I didn't expect she can deliver the baby for me in the middle of night. But she did it. I met Dr Rao today and I feel like I have known her all my life :) Back in India, doctors are usually an extended arm of your family. They can be contacted anytime you want,and can be even invited home for events and festivals. They don't treat you, they pamper you.You can talk to them for hours and they won't charge you an extra penny. So from a land of pampering when I came here and was clueless about finding the right doctors it feels good to have met Dr Rao. Her credentials took me to her. I was a few minutes late, but the office staff and the nurses were friendly and got me going quickly for my annual.She treated me sensitively and sincerely making sure I understood everything she was doing. She ran me through multiple options regarding my concerns. I really appreciate her patience, commitment,professionalism tempered with her friendly and cheerful personality. I originally was set up to see Dr. Elaine Chien for my annual exam but she ended up leaving early for her maternity leave. I was rescheduled to see Dr. Rao and she is a sweetheart. She's young and I believe Stanford trained since she was very familiar with the Stanford doctors I mentioned. I've heard nothing but good things about all the doctors in this clinic. read more

Dr. Rao is not your regular doctor that zooms in and out of the room like you are just another number on her patient list. I switched OB when I was 4 months pregnant because I don't like the "group practice" in my previous OB office (they have 7 dr/mid-wife rotation and you don't know who you get when you deliver...). I came across Dr. Rao and I'm so glad I did. She's very caring and easy going. Offer us advices without giving pressure on making a decision one way or another. She's also very thorough during our checkups and spends time to address any questions or concerns we have about the pregnancy. Never rush us out of the room even though we've got a million silly questions. She's also very knowledgeable and honest about everything. So you don't get sugar-coated answers! The postpartum checkups were also great (during our stay in the hospital as well as the 2 & 6 weeks checkup). We discussed issues and concerns about my post-pregnancy health as well as baby stuff. :) Overall, I would definitely recommend Dr. Rao to anyone looking for an OB! read more

I had Dr. Rao as my OB during my labor in the Sequoia Hospital. It was my first labor, so things are often going slowly. I wanted to give birth naturally but ended up with an (unnecessary) C-Section. When I came to the hospital, my cervix was open 6 cm. I was able to handle the pain during contractions very well. After a couple of hours, Dr. Rao mentioned that now would be a good time for the epidural. I asked for other options regarding pain drugs. She said, that a pain medicament would make the baby tired. I asked for the side effects of the epidural. She said that there could be some headaches during the next 2 days. She did not tell me any other side effects of the epidural but there are many of them!!! I got the epidural, but than, everything slowed down, what was probably the result of the epidural. That was an issue she did not tell me honestly before. To speed up things, she broke my water and gave us pitocin to speed up labor. I got the impression that everything has to go fast, even though there was no need for it. The baby did not like the pitocin, so I was given a strong medicament to stop contractions. With the epidural and the medicament to stop contraction, the labor was not processing that fast Dr. Rao would like. The heartbeat of the baby was very good so I felt no need to speed up things. It is very common during natural births, that there is a N.A.P. time after the cervix is open. That is like a rest time for woman and baby. During that time, laboring woman often sleep. That was exactly what I felt would happen now and would be best for baby and me but Dr. Rao was not OK with that. An other doctor was called. They did ultrasound and saw that baby was lying in the right position. The other OB mentioned if they should try to turn babies head. Unfortunately that was not done. Dr. Rao told my I should press for two hours, even though I was not yet in second stage of labor (pressing stage). If the baby would not come down, she would do the C-section. Imagine, you would like to deliver your baby naturally, your are lying on your back, the epidural is so strong that you can not feel your contractions any more and than you are set under such a time pressure fearing the c-section. You can not walk around what often does support progress of labor. It was horrible!!! In such a stress situation, you can't give birth! So after 2 hours I ended up with the C-Section. I was asking Dr. Rao if we could not wait longer but she did not agree. Felt like she was very impatient and I felt pushed into the C-section. She said that it is not an emergency - C-Section, so why was it done? During the C-Section, a cervix rupture happened. I am not happy about that since I have now a T-Scare. Choose your OB or your midwife very carefully! Do a lot of research about unnecessary C-Sections if you want a natural birth. There are lot of (hidden) reasons why C-Sections are done even though there is no medical reason for them. Consider to give birth at home with a very skilled midwife!!! They have often very low transfer rates to hospital. read more

I was very impressed with Dr. Rao from the first appointment I had with her, midway through my (fourth) pregnancy. We had recently moved to the Bay Area and I basically picked this practice at random from Google. The office is well organized; the staff are helpful and friendly. Dr. Rao herself is sweet, attentive, and laid back. I felt very at ease with her right from the start. She listened carefully to my concerns related to my previous pregnancies and complications I'd had. She was very open to all of my requests as related to my birth preferences. She was very supportive of my intention to have a third VBAC, was fine with my desire for an unmedicated labor and birth, and had no problem with my request to possibly deliver in a "nontraditional" position, possibly squatting. I never felt like she was talking down to me, and I came out of every appointment confident that I'd been heard and that my opinions were respected. I ended up having a very quick delivery in the middle of the night on a Sunday night/Monday morning, and she got there just in time. I was very pleased that she personally attended the birth, and that she knew what I needed and wanted and made sure we stuck to my preferences as much as possible. I did end up delivering in a very nontraditional position - even to my own surprise! - and she was very flexible in working with what my body needed me to do to get that baby out. Please do not go to this doctor when you are pregnant if you want to have healthy baby. I had no risk during my pregnancy. She did 3 ultrasounds during my first trimester for no reason. At that time, I was not aware of the risks involved. I have never heard anyone getting so many ultrasounds in the first trimester. She is really inexperienced and can put you in danger because of her unnecessary tests. I do not recommend her. read more

This is one of the best gynecologist I've ever seen and I'm so glad she's back. I had some polyps about 2 years ago and I was getting abnormal bleeding. She knew what was going on and we talked about my options and she put it all out on the table. We talked about using going to sleep for the procedure, she said it was easier to stay awake but I was really really scared. So she made sure I was comfortable and was very much my advocate. She is what a doctor should be! I was sad when she took a break (I think to have her son) but I'm so glad she's back!!!! read more

My husband and I will highly recommend Dr. Rao to anybody looking for an OB. We came to Women's Care Clinic to see Dr. Gandhi, but since she was leaving the practice we chose Dr. Rao as my OB. She was extremely patient from our first visit through the delivery and answered my gazillion questions. She followed through with all my test results and always called me to keep me informed irrespective of the outcome of the tests. We experienced a very unique situation in my 5th month. She did a wonderful job coordinating with a doctor from a different practice and suggesting solutions that we were comfortable with. This was a rare situation, so she did adequate research from her end and provided us all the details and allowed us to make decisions on the choice of our medication while still guiding us on the consequences. I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and Dr. Rao made us understand the diagnosis as well as life style changes that would help me have a healthy rest of the pregnancy (which, I did). Most importantly, she convinced me that GD was not caused due to something I did (or did not do) and I needed to know this to move on. When I was in labor, she followed through every step of the way and was at the hospital late in the night while I was close to delivering. She was amazing with the way she handled a few complications that arose during labor and was very deft with delivering our baby. In addition to all this, she understood that I wanted to deliver my baby naturally and encouraged / motivated me to make that possible, while still keeping me informed on when I might need to consider C-section. Dr. Rao was very patient, honest and diligent in the way she handled every single one of my prenatal visits. Without any hesitation I would go back to her if I choose to have a second baby! I needed to choose a gynecologist and I was given Dr. Rao as an option. I liked her educational background and health reviews that were found online. I met with her this week. Just to add onto this great experience -- my baby decided to turn breech in the last week of my pregnancy. Dr. Rao rearranged her Saturday to do a c-section right away so that I wouldn't go into labor. The baby was too big to turn and a c-section was my only option. She did a great job and I had very little pain afterwards. It was uncomfortable, but nothing I couldn't deal with by taking some motrin. Dr. Rao kept me calm beforehand and delivered a healthy baby boy. It was great! read more

I can't say enough about how amazing Dr Rao is. She took care of me during my pregnancy and delivered my son. From the get go I loved her straight forward style. She was knowledgable and patient when I'd have 10000 questions on my phone each time I saw her. She never once talked down to me and always listened to my concerns and took her time explaining everything to me. There were a few small concerns during the pregnancy and she supported me through each with compassion and professionalism. She was like my cheerleader, counselor and ob all in one. When it came time for my delivery i trusted her 110% and she delivered my baby personally in the middle of the night on a holiday. She also continued to check on me in the hospital afterwards. I highly recommend Dr. Rao to anyone! (as a matter of fact, I just recommended her a couple of weeks ago to a friend looking for an OB) She is fantastic. When I was pregnant I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This combined with my thyroid issues made for a challenging pregnancy. Dr. Rao very carefully monitored my progress during and after my pregnancy, making the necessary adjustments to my medication and watching my blood glucose numbers. As a new mother-to-be who had just recently experienced three miscarriages (with other OBs), these complications should have made me anxious. However, Dr. Rao is completely competent, professional, knowledgeable, and caring - I knew that I was in excellent hands! And in October 2009, Dr. Rao delivered my healthy baby girl!! I hope Dr. Rao never leaves this area because I want to keep her as my OB for as long as possible - I look forward to my appointments with her! read more

This update is long overdue, but Dr Rao delivered my 2nd son via a successful VBAC 6 months ago- she was extremely supportive, listened to all my concerns and wishes throughout my prenatal care, and was very thorough and informed me of all lab updates as soon as she had the information. It is extremely difficult to find supportive care providers, especially when attempting a VBAC, and i'm pleased to say she was genuinely supportive from the beginning. As always she was very caring, knowledgeable and confident- everything you need in a care provider. Highly recommended! read more

Dr. Rao is my all-time favorite physician I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I became a patient of hers after moving mid-pregnancy. I was anxious about switching doctors at this point in my pregnancy, but after my first appointment my anxiety was put to rest and I felt as if I had known Dr. Rao my whole life. I left that day feeling very confidant and more importantly so fortunate to have wound up in her care. She continued to impress me each and every visit with her unbelievably personable bedside manner, calm & sweet demeanor, competence and her overall wonderful personality. I also LOVED knowing that she would be the one to deliver my baby, which is simply a luxury nowadays as so many OBGYN offices operate with the "group practice" mentality. After having my son and returning for my postpartum visit, I felt as though I was coming in to visit with an old friend. I look forward to baby #2 so I can see Dr. Rao on a frequent basis again! I agree with Christina. I first saw Dr. Rao when she was with Kaiser. I was sad to see her leave Kaiser as my experience with Kaiser has since deteriorated. Beside Dr. Nomura, I won't see anyone else in that OB department due to bad experience of other young and inexperienced OBs. At first glance, you may see Dr. Rao as young and inexperienced, however, she won me over! She was very caring, empathetic and very clear in explaining different types of illnesses and procedures. I'm glad Dr. Rao is continuing to do what she loves. Hopefully I can switch my insurance and continue to see her. read more

Fabulous physician - incredibly competent and extremely approachable. I'm a doctor myself, and I wouldn't hesitate a moment to recommend her to anyone. She was there from when I was thinking about getting pregnant, through the birth of my daughter. She put me at ease with both her bedside manner and medical knowledge. She willingly listened to me gripe, while all the while being an inexhaustible (and patient!) resource for all my questions. I looked forward to every appointment (and I miss them now!) My delivery could not have gone smoother - I never felt pushed to fit any expectation or timeline. I loved that she knew when all of her pregnant patients were due and made sure to plan her vacation during a period that no one was expected to deliver. The practice she joined keeps to the old-fashioned idea that your OB should deliver your baby, not whoever is on call that particular day. My only regret is that I moved to the north bay soon after my daughter was born and won't be able to share my next pregnancy with her. read more

I was pregnant with my second child at 44 and started with a different doctor. Around 8 months into my pregnancy, I could tell that the direction my first doctor was taking was not one I was comfortable with. Needing a new doctor fast, I did some research which brought me to Dr. Rao. We chose Dr. Rao not only for her education and experience but also for her honest approach and willingness to listen and trust our history and experience. We felt that she would partner with us and was willing to take the time to explain some issues that were concerned about from a medical stand point. Her medical integrity is very high and she is willing to come up with out of the box solutions to problems that satisfied her need for medical information while taking care of our concerns. She looked at me as a person not as a statistic. I had a great two month experience with her and enjoyed my appointments instead if dreading them like I did with the last doctor. I delivered a beautiful baby boy in October with a quick labor, naturally, like I wanted. Everything I asked for that she could provide, she did. My only regret was not finding her earlier. I would highly recommend Dr. Rao to anyone, especially older moms, who want to have as natural a birth as they can. She is wonderful at working through the options with you and really listening.
