It's hard to write a review of a school that had its inaugural year smack dab in the middle of a…read morepandemic, which is why I'm giving it three stars instead of the two that I would be inclined to give it under less extraordinary circumstances. I'll start with some positives, the staff, teachers, and parent community at the school are lovely and kind, and the student body makeup seems to have a good mix of race and socioeconomic backgrounds. The school is lottery-based, so their student body's diversity depends on who they target via marketing efforts. The first red flag I had with the school was attending a parent education night, and the person leading the meeting mentioned that the 3rd-grade class spends the year studying stories from the Old Testament, starting with the "myth" of Cain and Able. Another mother and I did a triple take, we asked, "How is this possible in a public school?" The reply was that they teach these stories a "myths" and not as biblical stories. Around the same time, there was a rumble amongst the parents because some of the children in the older grades were told not to use black and brown crayons because they "weren't as pretty" as the other colors of crayons. In the midst of all that was happening in the world, this felt extremely inappropriate and off-base. That was my second red flag. This prompted me to do some deeper research into the origins of Waldorf because I had come into this school thinking this was a play-based, child-centered approach that didn't stress hard academics in Kindergarten and taught reading when it was developmentally appropriate, etc. The origins of Waldorf are laden with "spiritual", religious and racist undertones and the founder of Waldorf Rudolf Steiner was simply put a religious kook and a racist. I recently had my child assessed by an independent tutor for first-grade readiness as we are transferring to another school and he had only been exposed to 15-20% of the materials he needed to learn to be ready for 1st grade. Obviously, this was an upsetting revelation. At the end of the day, Waldorf was not for us and I would encourage everyone to research it deeply before committing to having their child attend any Waldorf-based school.

That is of course, until it was time to enroll my child in school. Growing up in a beautiful area and attending great schools meant that I wanted nothing less for my child. As I searched for private and charter schools I was very unenthused about the service and curriculum they offered. A part of me wondered if I had made the proper choice by moving to the Los Angeles area. Finally, I looked into public schools but was skeptical. With all the negative publicity, safety concerns, and lack of funding for the public school system I was mortified but attended a small orientation anyway. Upon entering the campus I was guided by smiling staff to a library for the children and then seated. Waiting for the orientation to start I couldn't help but notice how organized and thoughtful the staff was. They offered headsets to Spanish speakers and a translator to answer their questions along with those of the parents of English speaking children. Once started the principle wasted no time in outlining goals, expectations, and benchmarks the school had for children and their parents. I was impressed by the PowerPoint and overall direction the school administrators were trying to take. As I continually drilled the principal with questions and concerns he did not budge. His enthusiasm and commitment assured me I was at the right place and that my princess would be obtaining the education she deserved and I expected. Overall, I'm so blessed to have stumbled on to such a rare gem. The campus and staff easily make this the right choice for parents in the Los Angeles area.

When questioned about it and told she would be recorded, she retaliated against the student. She uses tactics such as retaliation and frames her actions as compliance with school policy. For example: "The student will have to continue his work in the office for one week, not in class, for 'his safety.' If the student refuses and stays home, the absence will not be excused." Safety does not appear to be the genuine concern here; it is being used as a pretext to punish the student for the parent and student raising the issue. Other students involved were not subjected to the same measures and instead continued attending class as usual. Roybal High School has an incredible view of downtown Los Angeles and a lot of potential, but if the community continues to tolerate this kind of oppression and abuse of authority--especially when it is disguised as "school policy"--our children will continue to be harmed.

The teacher to student ratio can be a little better (when can it not), but I can definitely tell that the teachers really care about their students and go above and beyond for them - my little ones can vouch! It's not often you find such motivated teachers that go the extra mile. Not only are the teachers awesome, but also the various clubs (specifically the robotics club)! It gives my babies something to look forward to outside of the classroom. The administration is also very accommodating to all the needs that our family has.
