This was actually a pretty good pub. A hidden gem if you will. Yeah, it's not that easy to get to, being hidden in the backstreets of Annandale, but I guess that is what I liked about it - it was out of the way, quiet, and rather relaxed. The Dale. The 90's soundtrack of my early 20's. It's undergone a complete transformation. Where the stage once proudly stood the wall has been knocked down for an expanded dining area, the dingy lighting replaced with hipster bulbs... but it's not all bad, they have a pool table and $4 happy hour! Another bonus is there's no little kids running rampant like at The Empire, well at least not any of the times I've been there anyway. I live 2 streets away from the Annandale so I guess you could say it's my local. We've eaten there quite a few times since the revamp and have to admit the quality of the food has gotten a hell of a lot better compared to when they first re-opened. Last Friday while waiting for the Mrs to finish work I took advantage of the $4 beers. $4 Happy Hour is only between 5pm - 7pm so be prepared to pay an extra $1.50 on your basic schooner after that, which is still pretty decent for Sydney. She ended up joining me for some dinner, I had the Country Chicken Burger while she had the Fun Guy Toastie. Pretty tasty stuff. I also highly recommend the Shnitty, all pubs do a Chicken Schnitzel but the Annandale does it especially well. As if we weren't stuffed enough we also indulged in dessert. Mrs must of been in a fun mood 'cause she ordered the "Fun Day" chocolate waffle sundae while I ordered "The Cookie Monster". If you haven't tried the desserts here yet, do yourself a favour... Go for the free live music and skip the food. A fun local spot to hear some great music in a low-key atmosphere. We met a friend last night and really enjoyed hearing The Tarantinos perform covers from the oeuvre of Quentin Tarantino flicks, complete with sound bites. They were a hoot and really enjoyed themselves on stage despite the small crowd. We ate dinner first and nothing was really great, but I am not going to knock a gift horse in the mouth. Since when do you get to hear good live music with no cover charge? That is definitely worth a pass on the food. I am knocking them down to three stars (from four) because they did not update their Facebook page with any information about the band and the event. It would have been nice to have a few more people there enjoying the music, I am sure the band would have enjoyed that as well. read more

Once the home of Australian Rock n Roll now a typical eclectic blend of inner west families, beards and tattoos. Still has a fantastic local music scene. Front bar has mainstream lagers, pilsners and ales. The back bar has a constantly changing selection of craft beers. The bistro has a wide selection of pub food. Lamb shoulder is my favourite however the Schnitzel is also great and the kids menu comes with a dink and ice cream. Staff are very friendly. Courtyard and back area is great for kids. They have colouring books and games. Front area is great for watching a band, a game of football or playing pool. They do breakfast now too, but I haven't tried that yet. read more

Will The Annandale still be a live music venue? Having already lost a dear venue in The Hopeton (Surry Hills), the loss of the Annandale, or even the wrong kind of refurbishment, would be devastating to Sydney's live gig enthusiasts. The Annandale Hotel is a great venue that rocks the underground music scene. It's not pretentious, just rock solid music in a simple no fuss venue. Bar staff rock along to the music with as much fervour as the crowd, their ears protected by fluro yellow plugs. The modest stage hosts a range of rock and indie bands (my most recent: Jim Ward and Jebediah) that often include the bar in their perimeters of the stage, reaching every member within the intimate space. Whilst the future of the venue is yet to be written, in the meantime I will continue to attend as many Annandale gigs as possible, making the most of the dirty, scummy dive pub where bands earn their stripes. read more

The name Annandale Hotel, not to be confused with the North Annandale Hotel unless you want to be half an hour late to a friends gig, is synonymous with pub rock. Oh noes! Why is The Annandale Hotel sporting a for sale sign?! Let this not be the end of another beloved music venue? The last time I visited was such a sublime evening. I met up with a friend for a delicious and sizeable Wok n' Roll feast before the gig - it had been a long day so a fresh and tasty stir fry was just what the doctor ordered. So much better than hitting up McDonalds across the road! The beer garden/Wok n Roll area is quite lovely. It was filled with happy campers and had a nice fresh ambience - with nary a hint of the loud Parramatta Road that roars by just around the corner. Inside things start to look a little worn - well, perhaps 'pre-loved' is a better description. The couches lining the reception room have definitely seen better days, but after standing up for the rest of the night, they do come in handy! The Annandale is too well located and too well loved to go the way of the dodo. Fingers crossed someone stages a rescue! read more

Pokemon No! I was "lured" here by a group of friends who disguised their addiction to this thumb arthritis culprit by announcing their want for a delicious juicy burger. But whatever!!!!! Located inside the Annandale Hotel they do specials on a weekly basis. This week? Black Bun - Angus beef with short ribs, onion rings and deep fried macaroni and cheese. Topped with sloppy special sauce you needed a kilo of napkins to clean your face. I, for fear of turning my mouth black and the knowledge that there was no Joshing way I would finish the monstrosity..... got the good ole cheeseburger cheeseburger. Still sloppy. I came for Burgers by Josh but was pleasantly suprised in the makeover that the pub has had. The menu is small but good. I had the J burger which was good. The beef patty was cooked well and the buttermilk bun is meant to be the softest in Sydney. They have a secret menu which can be found on instagram or if you ask the great bar staff they can help you out too. I had a side of fries which were like any other shoe string fries you can get from a fast food chain. Overall the burger was tasty but next time I would try another fry option with toppings. read more

Huge place with 4 sections each with a different feel. Loud DJ music in the front which is also a darker room and enough space to create a dance floor. Can make it hard to hear in the 2nd "in between" white-tiled room with cushioned booth seating. Plenty of booze options, 2 bars, food is average, large portions. The grilled cheese toasties sound small but they are definitely enough for a meal. Pork bun was not worth it, should've known since it was such a random offering on their pub menu. read more

You won't find a better pub in Sydney that serves up better food than "Wok n' Roll" at the Annandale Hotel. The perfect mid-week or pre-show feed, the menu caters for almost all diets, with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options, the staff are always happy to accommodate. While the weekend pub cha menu isn't quite as vast or versatile, I've never had a bad meal here. Everything is fresh and tasty with the right amount of spice. read more

If you're after a really grungey gig venue where you're more about the atmosphere than the gig itself, then you'll love the Annandale. That's not to say the bands that play here aren't any good, it's just you can come here and enjoy any gig. If you're into your big, soulless, echoey arenas, watching overly manicured bands, then this will not suit your needs. However, if you can appreciate the romanticism of breathing in the "sweet" smell of stale beer among other things, then you'll enjoy this. The narrow main floor with the bar on one side and the stage at the end has played host to a number of awesome bands over the years (my favourite being Dead Letter Circus a couple of years back), with the added bonus being you're not paying through your nose to come watch them as seems to be the case with going to a lot of other concert venues in this country. If a shows a sell out, be prepared to sweat as it can get pretty warm in the main room, but again, that's the charm of it! read more

The Annandale Hotel is well known for housing great live music. It's one of the few great places left that does it in a pub environment. There's been some massive names here and it's stooped in history. It's been close to having their doors shut a few times because of noise complaints but lets hope that never eventuates! Although there are other things to do if there aren't any bands. It has quite a nice beer garden and bistro out back. It's nice to get some light as I'm not sure when the last time The Annandale Hotel saw natural light indoors. The bistro is a great addition and does some really nice Thai food and also does some fantastic pub cha which is basically yum cha in a pub. If you've had a big night there watching a pub what better place to head back the next day and recap the night over some pub cha. Love it! read more

Terible experience, rude bar staff and duty manger was the worst manager i have ever encountered. The food was so under cooked i had to ask for refund. The refund was agreed by the bar staff, then refused by the duty manager as i had two bites from it. Just a terrible expeirence. Not sure how this manager has a job, no customer statisfaction just no regard to customer. Plenty of other nice places to eat. Advoid this place at all costs. Not worth the worry. read more

Ever since the Annandale "re-opened" it's been a shell of the great live music venue that it used to be. There is no ambience, the beer selection is OK with the only thing saving it (and earning all 3 stars in this review) are the great Burgers by Josh. You definitely have to try some of his special inventions and I'm a repeat customer for the food, but I move on to another bar once I've eaten. read more

The Annandale is one of those venues I forget how much I like, seeing a good band here is pretty special. It's steeped in sydney music history and in the little area just to the left of the doors as you go in there is a display of photos celebrating that. It's such a small space that even if its packed out and you're all the way at the back you can see everyone on stage and really feel connected to them. They also have a raised platform at the back for short people like me. The food at Wok n Roll their bistro isn't bad at all either and they do specials for patrons with tickets to shows. read more

I went in for lunch today and had just a $20 bill on me which was stapled cuz it was torn in half(it was part of the change I got from Annandale Hotel when I went there on Monday to have a chicken schnitzel lunch). The guy at the counter gave me grief about it and I asked him to go his manager and ask, and he went in to aks, and of course the manger said it was ok cuz it is ok! So he comes back, and begrudgingly takes my order. Half an hour go by and my lunch break is almost over, and he comes and tells me, he forgot to put my order through the register, and he just put it through, so it will be another while till I get my lunch. Talk about bad service and vengeful staff. Do you think I wanted eat my lunch there any more(maybe they'll spit in there too). I just got my money back and went to McDonald next door, which I should have done in the first place. Had a VERY bad experience with a possibly racist waiter. I saw other reiveiws later in google where other customers has wished they could give it a zero star review. read more
