Recently reopened after a three-year closure for renovations (and the pandemic), the Alexandria…read moreBlack History Museum is a small, yet powerful museum that's open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. After visiting on a Friday afternoon, here's my experience. 1) Admission: It's free for Alexandria residents, Blue Star families and Key to the City holders and $3 for everyone else. No need to reserve tickets ahead of time. Just walk in. I had the museum to myself. 2) Exhibits: The museum has two small rooms with exhibits. The first one is mainly reading with some artifacts about the history of Black Alexandria. There's a small area for kids with a scavenger hunt and a craft. The second room talks about Alexandria's response to the murder of George Floyd. The museum has a small bookstore worth exploring, especially if you like reading books. 3) Space: It's housed in a library for Black residents during segregation that was built after a sit-in at another library. 4) Neighborhood: There are many other historical sites nearby as well as cafes and restaurants. 5) Parking: There's no parking lot, but free street parking is usually easy to find nearby.

The Frary Gallery is a small art gallery inside the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center. It's…read morereally very small, but we stopped in yesterday to see their current exhibit, "Strong, Bright, Useful & True: Recent Acquisitions and Contemporary Art from Baltimore." Since we live in Baltimore, I loved that JHU put on a show of works by artists from our home/their hometown. The gallery really is tiny; I can't imagine anyone spending more than 15-30 minutes tops inside. But I thought the exhibit was really incredible for such a small gallery! I knew of several of the artist with pieces in the exhibit: Derrick Adams, Erin Fostel, Jerrell Gibbs, Joyce J. Scott. Their pieces were great, but I was thrilled to learn about other Baltimore artists I wasn't familiar with before visiting the gallery, too. When you arrive at the building (the old Newseum, only really spruced up - I hadn't been inside since it was the Newseum), you take a right - you'll see the gallery just to the right of the security desk. A staff member sits at a desk outside the gallery to welcome you in (you can make an appointment on their website, but I can't imagine you need one - no one else was at the gallery when we visited in the afternoon on a Saturday). There's not a public bathroom for people visiting the gallery, but the gallery is so tiny, you shouldn't be inside too long (you can pop across the street to a museum to use the restroom there if you need). All in all, I really enjoyed their exhibit, and I'd be happy to visit again for an exhibit in the future.

Opened for the first time in October 2024, its inaugural exhibit is "Art and Graphic Design of the European Avant-Gardes" through February 2025. Dozens of art and design pieces decorate the space with clear explainer cards. The gallery is free to enter, but there aren't restrooms. The security staff were kind enough to swipe me through to use the university's restrooms.

Inside a former community laundromat is an art gallery of local artists. The inaugural exhibit featured hand-crafted jute sculptures from an almost 70-year-old woman who's a fifth-generation Washingtonian. She took up her craft during the pandemic and now creates work that's unique and breathtaking. There's also a small exhibit of murals by Brian Bailey. Entrance is free and visitors can purchase the art from the exhibit. Street parking is easy to find nearby.

There was an event going on with the featured artist next door in the church building, but we were unable to stop by yet still enjoyed his artwork in the first room.
