There is local art in the front and bird related items, such as bird baths. Further in are all the bird feeding supplies one could want, from feeders to food, including bulk items. The new owner is enthusiastic and fun to talk to. In wandering through the store I saw an item I had to buy. It was a peanut feeder for jays. When we go on vacation we worry about our two California scrub jays. We feed them peanuts but can't leave the food around unattended because squirrels will eat it. This feeder looks like it will meet our needs, we can hang it on our balcony, out of reach of the squirrels. I need to train the birds now to get their own peanuts from the feeder. They are creatures of habit and this will be something new for them. If in the area, stop by the Raven Tree, you'll be charmed as well.

The interior is a bit small but that seemed to compliment the artsy local feel of it's style. Upon walking in, the loveliest woman invited us to help ourselves out to a selection of fine teas. I took her up on this. I didn't know that I wanted it until this lovely woman put the idea in my mind but it was the perfect thing for that brisk mountain morning. I honestly had not planned on buying anything as I rarely do with gift shops but as I looked around I began to find all sorts of little knick knacks that caught my attention. Sure there are your gift shop norms, the T-shirt and the Coffee Cup. As an Aside the coffee cup I purchased to remember my time in McCloud (I had an awesome time there) was huge, my kind of coffee cup. But then there were the out of the ordinary whimsical items that I just literally had to have. I found the most amazing children's book about so many different kinds of dragonflies with so much pictoral detail, as for my wife we purchased the most beautiful little carved antler key chain of a standing bear. It is a little totem she will cherish (it could easily be put on a necklace (Antlers for that particular local artist are wild-found in wilderness and are not procured through hunting I learned) There are a few great reasons to stay in McCloud when your really visiting Mt. Shasta. I will do that every time now. If you find yourself in McCloud you have to do yourself a favor and step into this lovely little nook of northern California charm. The expectation should be for more of a Feng-Shui local gift shop than one of those say, packed to the hilt with generic teddy bears and waxed based chocolates gift stores. Really loved the place.

No one even whispered a complaint and the make shift line created was confusing so people were spread in line. The family on what she deemed was the proper X spot was the last in line and said so when she started being rude to the other guests. They were perfectly patient it didn't mind waiting since they had gotten in line last. All the guests were very sweet and went up in the order they had been waiting, but she kept making rude comments to me and them. Not a way to treat your customers.

(Park roads were closed but we were welcome to park in their lot and walk in to the trails.) That said, there was a lot less traffic in the area, so understandably, The Elegant Farmer had a limited menu so they don't end up with a lot of wasted food. We enjoyed the food and would have liked to sit outdoors, but the property next door had a huge bonfire going and it was very smoky. At first it was tolerable, but then the wind shifted and blew it towards us, so we ended up sitting indoors. This is not a negative review for the business, more so for our timing. We plan on coming back to Lassen Park to enjoy all the hiking once it opens back up in spring/summer, so we look forward to trying The Elegant Farmer again. It's a darling store/eatery, and the outdoor seating is charming. I recommend you try it out if you're in the area.
