It saddens me to see all the one-star reviews. I've had nothing but positive experiences getting through to your representatives; although, the phone tree is exhausting...that's the kind of world we live in. I'm happy I have signed up for the PPO plan, after Blueshield of CA said "Bye Felicia" to the entire Bay Area. I like to stay optimistic, there's always a plan B; therefore, I signed up for a better one with one of the highest premium plans through my job. It's the only way when you have a family, and there are so many things to think about i.e., kids going to college out of State will have the convenience of seeing any doctor, kids in sports are more prone to injuries, kids period! My oldest daughter went on a college trip to Guatemala and got really sick. She was able to use my stellar insurance to be seen by a reputable doctor in a third world country who spoke English well and didn't try to dupe her. My middle child has been using my insurance in New York, where she attends college, and chooses my insurance instead of her college's (which isn't any cheaper). She's more like a hypochondriac and says she's allergic to grass & nickel SMH. I call it middle child syndrome, always wanting attention HA! My son was recently hospitalized, and we're receiving endless medical bills. It was an absolute sticker shock to see some of the significant expenses, but after reviewing some of what the insurance paid/adjusted, I was somewhat relieved to know this insurance company provides some decent coverage. It's really expensive in this country to be sick, especially with kids, thank gawd for good insurance! read more

Stay away from Anthem insurance. They do not take FRAUD seriously. Their dental providers (Image Dental by ha nguyen in San Jose) submitted fraudulent claims that never happened. I opened an appeal and they took her side even when I provided proof of receipt. The state of CA do not take dental and medical fraud serious. I ended my insurance plan immediately. read more

This is the absolute worst insurance I have ever had in my life. I pay $800 a month for the silver plan through covered California. This is with the subsidies offered through the affordable care act. Without the subsidies, I would pay close to $1200 a month. This is supposed to be a midtier plan that covers a lot, but it doesn't really cover much of anything and this company is beyond dysfunctional. On two occasions, I have seen doctors that are listed on their site as being in network only to have the claim denied due to them being out of network. I have literally had to file complaints with the department of insurance in order to get them to pay. I just had a cataract surgery and had a series of appointments where I not only had to pay a co-pay to see the doctor but co-pays for all the tests that were done. Just what is the point of having insurance if they don't cover anything? What is the point of having insurance if nothing on their website is accurate? Is it just so the fat CEOs can get fatter? This company is a disgrace as as the healthcare system in the United States. read more

They have refused to reimburse me for valid claims for months. I have now spent a combined 30 hours trying to troubleshoot their own incompetence for them, and they outsource their tech support to a third party company, Accolade, meaning you can never actually speak to someone with the authority (much less understanding) to really help you. Anthem Blue Cross has to be one of the worst insurances I have ever had! I had a prescription that needed pre authorization on a Friday afternoon, which wasn't going to happen so my insurance company representative told me to pay for the medication and I would be reimbursed for it. It was $120 because the pharmacy had to charge me the out of pocket cost, and I submitted the claim and was DENIED! Why would they tell me to pay for it and then not give me my money back once it was authorized? This insurance is a joke- they only care about the money they get, and don't care about their customers at all. I gave one star because I had to choose but I would honestly give them no stars. read more

Anthem Blue Cross is terrible. I tried to find out what my copay was on a generic medicine from their web site. After two hours of chat with 3 different agents. No one has the answer. I later found out that Anthem Blue Cross does not have live person answering questions via chat; only useless robots with the names like Angelica, Katherine etc. I pay $1600 a month of premium. I was given faulty information regarding my medical group only to find out my doctors are no longer associated with ABC beginning in 2024. Then, I was issued a new doctor who wasn't even accepting new patients! I've done countless hours of research when $1300 comes out of my pocket monthly. I had Anthem through work for a few years. We tried using Sydney app to find doctors, most doctors on there are not in network, or it is a number to the hospital. One of the numbers was to a doctor in county jail....why would you put...that means I have to get locked up...come on guys. Even the doctor addresses was to a hospital rather than private practice. Now, UCSF is no longer working with Anthem..who cares right? My doctor of 4 years dropped me and said its due to insurance. This doctor was for pediatrics, for my kids. My daughter turned 4 months and needed vaccines.. We tried calling around to find out she needs to do the intake process all over again before vaccines, so physical and all that.... then find an appointment booked out? for PPO! It should be illegal for insurance companies and doctors to spat like that..it affected our family, we had to change insurances within enrollment period, we were without help and critical vaccines needed for patients under 1 years of age.. There should be new law, where it states a mandatory cut or percentages each must agree to. Bogus. We changed insurances, we would never recommend this insurance company. not just our family was affected...millions? how do you recover from that. What does this show to all the patients who needed critical care, to find out you are refused. Absolutely terrible insurance company. Good luck getting non contradicting answers on what's covered or what's in-network. Get a bill that you shouldn't have? They say whoopsie its fixed now, good thing you didn't simply pay it or you would have gotten ripped off. The catch? You have to spend an hour on the phone with them to prevent them from billing you for their mistake. I will be avoiding doing business with them wherever possible. In the last three years, three of my primary providers quit or stopped taking this plan. I am without a provider. I tried to contact and make arrangements for another primary care provider No one replied. After one week of trying I am unable to renew my thyroid medication. They did a welfare check. I revealed many type of support I need from them: severe depression, dizziness...months later no one got back to me. It may not be perfect, but, I am sure Kaiser would not leave its subscribers without a provider. Today I was on the phone with one of the reps and she didn't even know they switched from Aim to Carelon as a 3rd party authorizer so they had to cancel one of my much needed surgerys. the whole process felt sketchy and unprofessional. Yes, I agree with the 1 star rating at this point. I have been waiting on the phone to talk with a supervisor--for 40 minutes now. I called to make sure my HR extended my benefits. Even though I am officially employed until July 31, 2024, I was told that I had to pay out of pocket to have my benefits extended. Yesterday was apparently the "deadline." Therefore, a friend suggested I call to make sure this extension was made, and I have been patiently waiting for a supervisor for 40 minutes now. The person I spoke with informed me that they had "no way to verify whether my benefits had actually been extended," which sounds unusual to me. After about 25 minutes she said that the usual procedure is to "have someone call you back in 48 hours". I explained that this was urgent, as yesterday was given as a "deadline." At least person # 1 has come on twice, telling me that "the supervisor is assisting other members," and I told her that I would continue to hold. At this point I am still waiting, so I have no idea whether I will actually get a supervisor, but they obviously need to improve customer service. I have finally given up and hope that they will eventually call me back. read more

Only took me 10 minutes to get to a person. She said she'd have to put me on hold for 2 or 3 minutes to look up my balance. I guess I shouldn't have asked her if her system was running slow or if they were still on paper. Been on hold 30 minutes since then. Okay - I've got you on speaker phone, I'll listen to low quality grating music and wait you out. Words can't describe how much I hate Anthem. Not just for this experience - it's been bad on so many other items. Decent doctors, but everything else is minimal quality. (Actually everything else is GARBAGE.) I've called several times for claims related issues. Many times you are on hold for over an hour while the rep is apparently juggling many calls. Additionally, their support call center has dropped my calls at least five times. I would not recommend them based on their extremely poor support. Various plans offered state "0% owed after deductible", but they don't tell you that those plans will pay almost nothing until you hit the deductible. So, if you have a $3-5k yearly deductible, expect to hit that... or never see a doctor. read more

Amazingly bad experience. Their "Find Care" service always gives obsolete results - the list of providers it gives is deprecated so when you call or come to a health provider then they just say "nope, we do not work with Anthem Blue Cross" despite on the Anthem website this provider still appears as "in network". So you're just wasting your time, unable to get health care and continue to pay for the insurance. If you need to speak with a representative then you would have to spend hours waiting on the phone line (or probably days - as in my case). read more

These people take your money and deny your claim. They have a terrible reputation and I made the mistake of hiring them to serve me. I have an mri that shows meniscus tears. I have pain every night. I have a surgeon that opened an appointment for me. I changed my business life around to accommodate the surgery only to have the procedure denied in the last minute. Because of other health issues and business schedules I will endure another month of pain. Don't rely on anthem if you need heath insurance. read more

My father was hospitalized for heart problems. While in the hospital, his cardiologist ordered him a Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (for my dad to wear upon discharge). Anthem Blue Cross refused to authorize this order. Initially the cardiologist refused to release my father from the hospital, knowing my father's life was in danger without this devise. This doctor re-submitted the request to Anthem Blue Cross two more time and both times they were denied by Anthem Blue Cross. Eventually the doctor gave up with trying to deal with Anthem Blue Cross and my father was sent home from the hospital. My father died a week later when his heart stopped while he was sleeping. The Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator would have prevented this. I hold Anthem Blue Cross completely responsible for my father's death. My father was a wonderful person. He worked hard all his life and always paid for health insurance. He expected Anthem Blue Cross to take care of him during his time of need, but Anthem Blue Cross let him and our whole family down. We will never get over this loss or forget the terrible tragedy that Anthem Blue Cross has caused us. My father should be with us today. Avoid Anthem Blue Cross. read more

How is it that their phone service is so poor? It seems that with every iteration, it gets worse. Once upon a time I could have them automatically draw from a credit card, now I have to go through the phone service every single month. once upon a time, even though I had to go through it every single month, at least it kept cc info on file. Now i have to enter it every time. The volume is all over the place. if you make a mistake, it dumps you. If the actual insurance is as bad as the website and phone service, god help me. read more

Warning: stay as far away from Anthem Blue Cross as you can. I'm not talking about how the company processes claims, or the helpfulness of customer service. What I want you to know is that the apparent quality of very many of the doctors associated with this company is subpar. Whereas about 90% of doctors in the U.S. are board certified, my guess is that somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of the primary care doctors available on Anthem's list are NOT board certified. But it doesn't stop there. Even when you eventually find a board certified doctor, the next thing you want to know is whether they went to a respected medical school. For doctors in the U.S., that typically means attending a medical school located in the U.S. Naturally, there are fantastic schools in other countries, but the ones in the Caribbean, for example, are not what you want to see on your doctor's CV. That's not to say a person is a poor choice for your medical care merely because he or she obtained a degree from a school people attend because they weren't accepted into a U.S. school. But you're trying to find a doctor based on background and the medical school is one very important factor. However, Anthem takes a different view of this. From what I saw looking for family practitioners and internists, a large percentage of their doctors have foreign degrees. And, a large majority of these are also not board certified. It's actually appalling that Anthem would team up with so many doctors saddled with the double whammy of foreign degrees and no board certification. I had to look through pages and pages of their doctors just to find a few that were both board certified and from a respected school. If you can choose between Anthem and any other company, choose one of the others. You don't even need to compare the plans. Just choose the other one - Anthem is that bad. read more

We were forced to change from Blue Cross of CA to Anthem thru corporate coverage. It is by far the WORST insurance company I have ever worked with as an employee of a global corporation. Our prescriptions have doubled in cost. Anthem denies anything they deem as 'not necessary' even though it has been prescribed by a doctor or specialist in their network. BEWARE! I have back problems. Doctor took an X-ray of my spine and found the cause of the pain. Anthem Blue Cross CA denied the claim. 3rd screw up this year. I called Anthem Blue Cross but it was hard to speak with the rep because she's working from home with a screaming child too close to the phone. This company sucks. It's like an ad for why you should switch to Kaiser. Horrible, dysfunctional company. Have surgery scheduled in 3 days, and today is Saturday. Doc recommended, and hospital assured me, BC would cover one night stay as I live 2 hours away. BC has known about this for over a month. Got letter TODAY saying the stay is denied. A letter, not a call. On a Saturday. Myriad terrible experiences in he past as well.
