This place is magical, it's the perfect barn for any discipline and or any type of rider. You walk in and instantly get hit with a different micro climate which is usually beautiful. The views and trails are amazing and horses well taken care of. If you decide to take lessons here, they are not pushy on you showing or buying a horse that's 100k. You don't have to be in a training program to board your horse here. Anthony and Vijoa are very sweet and tolerant of boarders, students and staff. I can't say enough about how amazing Kheystone Management is. My daughter has been volunteering and receiving lessons for the last year. Vijoa, Anthony, and all of their employees have been amazing to work with. They offer amazing equestrian training with an emphasis on safety for both the rider and the horses. Unfortunately, managers (one is also the main instructor who makes sure they don't allow other instructors to come in ) are turning this great equestrian facility into their private backyard. They are unreasonable, autocratic, they are not competent to work with the public and boarders, being very defensive when it comes to ideas that are meant to improve the experience of those who turn into Chabot, hoping to get the right support for riders and horses. The fees are high, even though this is a state park. Managers are mainly interested in their own pockets and slowly but steadily, are turning this beautiful public space into their private territory. They persecute those they don't like, they are extremely defensive when failing management of the facility and its horses is mentioned, they are disorganized and not interested in supporting riders and wont give them the chance to excell in their chosen disciplines (they wont allow other trainers to be part of the staff) . You basically have not much of a choice, but paying an exorbitant amount of money for mediocre services. Stay away. If you are interested in exploring the trails, park somewhere close by and have a fun time with your horse without dealing with them or paying them 200 dollars( !!) for a short trail ride. My child is going to have lessons somewhere else. Good luck! read more

I live in the area on Skyline and Skyline Circle. I used to take my 9 year old boy here to look at the horses and look at the beautiful scenery. A weekend ago, my son wanted check the horses since its been awhile. I remember that when his little, the people who worked there were sometimes friendly. When we there recently the people were so unhappy, unfriendly, and just look so unhappy to be there. My son and I are so friendly and would say hi. I used to go horseback riding as a kid, loved it. If my kids were interested I would be excited. But, observing what we experienced a weekend ago, I would never sign them up here. It's a real shame since we live so close. read more

I rarely if ever write negative reviews but the behavior of this stable's management is irrational, irresponsible and unethical. They told me I'd been accepted for lessons, required me to take a prepaid "meet and greet" for $145, then informed me two days later that they wouldn't give me lessons after all. Stunned, I wrote a polite response and requested a refund. They didn't respond. So then I called to talk to someone who gave me excuses that made no sense and who clearly didn't care. I just read some of the other 1-star reviews and it's clear this management is irresponsible and has no idea how to treat its customers. When I read the other one-star reviews, they reflected the same problems as I encountered. There's clearly a pattern of problems with these people. Maybe that's why there was almost no one there the day I went. I'm so sorry I did business with them without paying attention to the reviews. read more

My kids took lessons there within the last year. The facility looks amazing. Great trails, good care for the horses. Nice arena. If I owned a horse this might be the place. And lessons are probably good if you have your own horse. But lessons on their horses, no. They made some very bad choices in their lesson horses. They are too young, too inexperienced, and seriously I believe they are thinking that the riders are there to train their lesson horses. Its a sad situation. Its not safe. And they will outright lie about the fitness of their horses to keep it going. They have wasted this amazing opportunity to run a beautiful facility in an area where demand outstrips supply many times over. It is a terrible waste of such an amazing public resource. read more

I have been at this East Bay Regional Park equestrian facility for many years. I have loved my time there and the people there and it saddens me to write this. In April new management came in. Was looking forward to see how they would rise to the challenge of managing a 70 horse barn. Shortly after they took over, they brought in their own horse from another facility which was experiencing an infectious bacterial outbreak that can easily pass from horse to horse. The stall that they put their horse in had direct contact with a handful of other horses. They did not think that it might be a good idea to quarantine this horse as a precaution, and the infection spread to multiple horses on the property. Management has shown to be reactive to what's going on instead of proactive to stop the spread of the bacteria. This is a public facility within the East Bay Regional Park, which has many visitors who like to come and see the horses. Horse owners have been asked to remain in the buildings where their horse's stall is located and to disinfect their feet if they have to go to another building. Management did not post any signage regarding the quarantine and the public would freely coming through walking through multiple buildings sometimes petting horses, potentially spreading the bacteria. After many requests to management to put up signs and/or some type of barricade, a group of horse owners completed this task to protect the horses. It has only been thanks to a group of boarders who have donated their times for multiple weekends to help out our local vet test horses in order to isolate positive horses to stop the spread. Management has not help with any of the testing. When owners have gone to management for help management's response has been that it is not their responsibility. Management has shown to be rude, confrontational, and argumentative to boarders who approach them with concerns regarding the health and safety of their horses. read more

This place was the best barn in Oakland but then the new managers brought their personal horse from Applecreek where there is a strangles outbreak. They didn't put him in isolation for 5 days and he turned out positive. Now there is strangles actively spreading through the barn from him, at least 6 horses now. New managers (Kheystone Management) haven't taken any responsibility. They put out the bare minimum of information through their communications person (boarders have to email them directly if they want any more information) and they have been defensive and hostile to questions or concerns from boardes. Now the place is on lockdown weeks after it should have been and the public is walking around while boarders can not leave thier barns. That doesn't make any sense if you are trying to contain illness. If this is the way Kheystone manages then don't bother bringing your horse here for the next 3 years. They do not seem to care about horse safety (now is like putting on a show for the EBRPD when they can't hide thier actions anymore but the illness has already spread) and they are not forthcoming or reassuring they are defensive and hide things. They dodge public questions and putting anything in writing and only respond to questions privately and then often getting hostile. Very sad as this was a great place to be now does not feel safe for me or my older horse. read more

I've boarded here for over 15 yrs and loved it until new management took over in April. The feed is such that many horses won't eat it and the footing in the arenas has gotten worse. They schedule turnouts and their lessons so that most of the arenas/ round pens are unavailable for large parts of the day. I'm so sad to see what they are doing to this once wonderful oasis in Oakland. read more

This is the best barn I have ever boarded at in all my 32 years of being a horse owner. I can see why I was on the waiting list for 5 years. Once you get in you stay forever! There is a new manager there now and the place is really getting cleaned up. The arenas have new footing and are dragged daily, the horses are fed 3 x a day, and they give you very generous helpings of shavings. For a barn that is open to the public the people who come visit the horses are very respectful. The boards are all nice and place has a great vibe. The scenery of being located at a trailhead in the Anthony Chabot Park is breathtaking. My horse and I are happy happy happy. read more

I recommend this wonderful stable as it has always been a good one. I grew up at this stable in the 70's and it was a good stable then. With the current Mgr. Mona, EQUESTRIAN CENTER is the BEST stable there is in the Bay Area. I grew up with her also, she is the most wonderful caring person with over 30 years of equine experience. I have been fortunate to have been a boarder here for almost 12 years. The concessionaire has cleaned up the place and it is looking great. Both horses and humans are cared for very well by the management. This is a horse boarding facility that is located on EBRP land. There are 2 other boarding barns also on park lands and none of them have rental strings or pony rides, though. This is a wonderful place to board, and is made even better since it allows direct access to some of the best trails in the East Bay. read more

This barn is great! It's very large, and spacious. I complete turn around from the previous barn I was at, Skyline. The people are all friendly, for the most part. The new barn manager, Mona, is helpful, kind, and hard-working. I would definitely recommend this for riders of any age or level. There are instructors for all levels. All the instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and sweet. The barn is also great for borders. The stalls are good sized (there are different sizes you can pay for), and management communicates with well with the boarders, assuring that both you and your horse are happy. read more

I use to board my horse at this barn when it was under different management and it was a great place for boarding with the best access to beautiful trails. I have boarded and been involved in many different barns in different states across this country, both public and private. The one big draw back about this barn unfortunately were many of the other boarders and the very negative gossip that I witnessed. I was not bothered much directly. I did my own thing smiled and was "submissive" and stayed out of the way. I even rode my horse in the rain and the dark in the outdoor lower arena even though I risked getting bucked off if a deer popped out down around there because I preferred taking that risk than the risk of dealing with the personalities and the risk of "getting on the wrong side" of someone. I had no problem with the management at the time I was there. I just was surprised by many of the the adults and how they treated each other. But the boarding facility was wonderful. Also if you are interested in lessons and sending your children for lessons I would tell you to make sure the instructors are certified either BHS certification or ARIA Certification. There are a number of talented instructors in the Bay Area so do your research. Remember learning to ride a 1000 lbs animal with a mind of it's own is a big deal would you want to learn to ride a motorcycle from some guy/gal that has a motorcycle or from a certified trained professional? read more
