I don't know if I am too young or too old when I was browsing around Anthropologie. Maybe I am really out of it! But gee I don't really find anything that I want to try on remotely... and I did not even look at their prices. Personally I find that the clothings looks much better on their website in the photos than when I actually see the real thing! The housewares sections are interesting as they have nice things for the kitchen maybe some of my friends would have like some of those for house warming gift. read more

Exciting news for fans of floaty, feminine fashion! As of April 22nd, 2009, there is an Anthropologie in Canada! My friends and I have been waiting a long, long time for this. We have pored over every Anthro catalogue and studied the website with the sad knowledge that only rare cross-border voyages make shopping there possible. Admittedly, Anthropologie does ship to Canada but the costs are stunningly high. None of that matters now because at last we have an Anthropologie to call our very own! On my first visit to the brand new store, I was very happy to see that it was just as beautiful as the American stores (merchandise and shop front both). I did overhear some loud person proclaim, "Everything in here is waaay too Kate Hudson-y." I know what they mean - lots of gentle hippie florals and soft fabrics. I spent about half an hour just browsing the hooks and knobs section. Then I made the tour of the rest of the very spacious store and loaded myself up with clothes to try on in the well designed change rooms. It was agonizing to narrow my rack full of possibilities down to two perfect, classic, comfortable dresses that I am very excited to wear. For me, shopping at Anthropologie is a special treat. The clothing is always quite pricey but the treasures I find there are unusual and unforgettable. PS: A downtown shop is planned for Yorkville, opening in July. read more

I had no reference point to this store as I had neither seen nor heard of it before. Someone pointed out they are owned by Urban Outfitters which didn't help much either as I don't know much about that store either other than that I have seen their sign here and there. Walking in it felt like a modern countess villa. I mean flowers print galore from head to toe, kitchen to sink..... you get the idea The space is huge but the layout is odd to say the least, just a mish mash of things here and there Music is unexpected on the visit there as it didn't go with the ambiance they are going for here. Its difficult for me to rate this store as either you like this design/feel or don't. The places where dreams are made of...until you look at the prices. Not cheap by any standards for the clothes/accessories however surprisingly the home decor items aren't too bad, especially considering that they are pretty unique. Located in the Shops of Don Mills, this store is well laid out with space to move and well categorized - clothes in the front with a petite section (yes!), home decor in the middle and bedroom/linens in the back. There is a small area way in the back that houses their sale items and you can find some pretty decent things in here. But even at the sale prices it's sometimes still above my budget. The home decor items is the real reason I come in - i love how upscale and classy they look, even when they have fun and whimsical patterns going on. Everything from plates to mugs to glasses to serving utensils to drawer knobs and hooks can be found here. They had a beautiful coloured glass cake platter that i wanted but it was sold out when I checked recently :( Everything is so lovely that you will never want to put them away in cabinets because you want everyone to see you gold edged serving spoon and fork set (swooooooon). They also carry fragrances and makeup and candles and items like journals and pens and jewelry. I actually really love their jewelry and maybe one day I will be able to afford it but I just can't justify the prices for it. If you need a great hostess gift or a lovely present that you know will be unique definitely check out their home decor stuff. The music is too calm and boring, If I worked here Id probably fall asleep. It causes me to walk reallllly slow in here and just want to touch everything! The sales is nice and not pushy, they know the problems and am helpful. The clothing is very cozy, cute and bummy looking, it has this vintage and comfy feel to it. The clothing is not my style, but I love the decor stuff, especially the hand painted cups, it brightens up my house! They have nice house decorations perfect for house warming gifts. read more

Nice Holiday sales! I just bought a coat at 50% off which was the same price I got at a Winners. I like their clothes, but like all clothing that is generally made in China, I would not pay full price. I love the looks, but honestly if I were to spend more than $100 on a dress, I would walk down the street to Melanie Lyne. But I do enjoy their sale items because that really is the only time I would buy something here. read more

$$$$$$ for Boho? No thanks! I've been shopping at Anthropologie in Beverly Hills and NYC since my teens. While it was always a little pricier than I would have preferred, I splurged for pretty, unique and well made garments. Since bringing the chain to Canada, the prices are DOUBLE that of American stores. Not to mention that the American stores have better and more frequent sales. After browsing a few times, I refuse to shop there in Toronto. The store itself is cleverly set up like a nice thrift shop, but the prices are astronomical for ho-hum things made in China. I have honestly found more beautiful and better crafted Bohemian clothes in the finer thrift shops downtown. That is the style Anthropologie is venturing after; a vintage Boho look. At that price, I'd rather look cookie-cutter. read more

Nice looking store. But the prices for casual clothing are ridiculously expensive. Not too many sizes either. Good for the rich, slim, young ladies. I went there hoping to find some upscale items for officewear since I heard it was a good store from friends & co-workers. But everything was too casual. Disappointed. :-( read more

I was at Shops on Don Mills for dinner yesterday, and decided to walk off my meal by visiting this store. I used to LOVE Anthropologie prior to its introduction in Canada. I actually have been buying clothes from this brand for years and years in the City Place, Palm Beach location. The clothes were really cute, summery, and fresh...very befitting Palm Beach. Then, Anthro opened up here with its higher prices and our tax. And I didn't feel like paying for relatively the same clothes here. I can't say that I like the style now. It's a weird mix of at-time 1960's clothing, bohemian-like dresses and skirts and shirts with lots of polka-dots. Sometimes I come here and I find nothing at all. Other times, I find really great dresses that I still wear to this day. In other words, I don't come out of my way to shop at Anthro, but when I am here, I do make a stop. Clothing here is not cheap, and I can never find my size in the small and cramped Sale Room. What I really like is that Anthro carries cute wine glasses and kitchenware products that if I had my own home, I would certainly buy. For now though, it's a love-hate with Anthro, although, I really love the layout of this store. Nice, big, and the changerooms are huge! Service has always been very accomodating and I can't complain. There is also an Anthropologie Customer card where you get points and the good thing is that you can use in any location (Canada and US). If you forget your card, they always have no problem checking the system for you. read more

I walked through the store again...and I GOT IT....In many years (less than 3), anthropologists on a dig at the site, will be enlightened, by what they dig up. They will scratch their heads, and wonder how the 'ancients' lived. Now is that a compliment or...? This is an update to my earlier review which does not seem to show up here. It went like this: Ladies.....stop your exuberance. This form of store has been around for years. They have found a different package, and upped the prices. I had visited these in the U.S. and was not impressed. They have very nice eye appeal, and really a limited clothing selection. If you are on a safari for random household goods, they have that too. And cutesy things! Any item there, taken out of context, and placed in let's say IKEA (not the clothing), would not look out of place. It is savantly arranged and very nicely displayed. I has the edgy urban vibe, like all the 'hotel' furniture being sold, but will be "so yesterday" in a few tomorrows. This is a large investment and they will have to generate massive sales, and achieve a high gross margin (read this to be no mark-downs or real sales). I see that Marie got so excited by this store....Marie hold on! I am voting that it will last maximum 2.5 years..and then be gone! By the way, the wife dragged me there...she had been to the one in Chicago, and I also shared my feelings with her. Thank god the credit card did not get a workout that day. read more

I just LOVE this store, ever since it opened, I have been there very frequently. It doesn't help that I live a block from the Don Mills location. Although most things are quite pricey, they have very unique designers. This is where you'll find different things, things that can't be found anywhere else. Although the store doesn't compare to it's US counterparts (at least the ones I've visited), it's still a very nice and pretty store. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the Anthro card. I use it to track my purchases for the returns if any. Anytime I bring in something to return, I give them the card so they can swipe and track it for the return. They always ask if I have the receipt, since it's faster. Well, what is the point of the card then? That's why I don't bring/keep the receipt! Otherwise, I will forever be a fan of this store, so glad it came to Canada, and so close to where I live! Now i'm just waiting for J. Crew!!! *crosses fingers it'll be soon!* read more

What happens when you are a loud, fashionable 20-something who works in the corporate world... Where can you shop that combines the quirks of Urban Outfitters with the classic stylings of Banana Republic? The answer is Anthropologie...and I just about creamed my pants when I heard that they were coming to Canada! For those of you who have not had the pure pleasure of shopping at this store before let me give you the gist: It is owned by Urban Ouutfitters and is marketed as their older more sophisticated female shopper.... this mean two things, no iconic tees with catchy one liners and big pricepoints (consider a dress at UO is about $70 it will be about $150 at Anthro!) Beyond the exuberant pricepoints this store is the bomb and I truly believe that their strength is in the details. From hidden pockets to embellishments and interesting textures Antro has something classy, sexy, and comfortable for everyone! This location is one of two currently open in Canada (the other is at the West Edmonton Mall) however a second Toronto location is scheduled to open next month in Yorkville. The clothing at Anthropologie never fails to impress - they really do sell gorgeous pieces, especially if you like feminine, detailed prints that add modern twists to classic looks. The majority of the clothing is a bit dressy, although they do sell some casual clothes as well. The downside is always the price, unfortunately. The regular priced clothing is really steep, typically around $128 per item. However, I always seem to find great sales at this location. Just recently they had a "take an additional 40% off sale items" offer that resulted in some great deals. My friend who used to work in retail has complained that the staff here are not very friendly and rarely smile - but that doesn't really bother me. I sort of have a get-in-get-out focus when I shop, I don't really look for friendly and outgoing staff. But if that is something you look for, know that you probably won't find it here. read more

Wow. This store has the worst customer service ever. EVER. I just called the Don Mills location to ask a very simple question about whether a particular item was in stock (the website said it was, but just last week, I checked the website for something, was told it was in stock, but then visited the store and found it was NOT actually in stock). So, to avoid the same issue this time, I called first. The item I wanted was a piece of small furniture that costs around $500. It's not a small thing, but the girl who answered the phone could not have been more curt. "What's the SKEW?" she practically shouted at me? I asked "Is that the same as the product number on the website?" She signed. "I need the skew so I can look it up quickly. Can you get the skew, I need the skew." All of these lines are delivered rapid-fire, as if I'd called in the middle of this woman performing brain surgery and I'd REALLY pissed her off. Give me a break. (And yes, I realize she meant the SKU number, but really ... is it too much to ask that these people don't shout jargon at you? She sounded manic.) I said, "Okay, well, if that's the same as the product number, I can give it to you, just one sec." She says, "I'm putting you on hold. This is taking too long." Really? I have the number in front of me. I literally needed one second. Instead, I wait on hold for several minutes. She returns to the line with her usual bark "Have you got the SKU yet?" I read her the number. She says, "We had one, but I think it sold." So I tell her that the website says it's still available. Would she be able to check for certain? She answers, "I could check in the back for you, but I think it's sold. We only got one." I ask if she knows if they might be getting more in. She SIGHS audibly. "No. I have no idea," she says. I ask her to check the back since the info on the website does not seem to match the info she has. She sighs again, agrees to check the back, puts me on hold, and about a minute later, the call is cut off. It's clear that instead of coming back to the line, she hung up on me. SUPER customer service. Not. It's bad enough that Anthropologie insists on stocking its pretentious stores with oversized hipster folk art stolen from various poor craftspeople of the world, but they hire idiots and jerks as well. I like their boho chic vibe and agree the regular prices are ridiculously expensive. When they do go on sale though, they are ok. The staff at this particular store is totally oblivious of the fact that their first priority is to SELL. So when a customer is waiting in line to shed some money, they should not be folding scarves at leisure... I waited like 20 minutes in front of the checkout while 2 associates were completely ignoring me. When I finally said something one of the looked at me annoyed (hey, she had some much fun with those scarves!!) and told me someone will show up shortly. Needless to say, I don't need to waste my time and money on such service. At the end of the day, I can get all that somewhere else. So I ended up leaving my picks on a rack and was gone. Then called the store manager to share my experience and recommend that perhaps they do the folding when there's no one in a rush to beef up their bottom line and she thank me for the call. No offer to perhaps process the purchase the item over the phone (perhaps with a 10% discount as an appreciation for being a loyal customer with a disappointing experience, etc) or anything like that. Do not order from anthropologie. Their customer service is appalling. I can't print a return label, no info on how to do it. Noone updating the delivered items so can't print return label. Noone is answering their phones for customer service and took one week for someone to return an email. Still no answer on how to return items. I hope they go bankrupt. read more

I am and have been a big fan of Anthropologie for quite some time even before it came to Canada. Their Clothes, although overpriced, are just beautiful and so unique. The Canadian prices are just way too much even for an die-hard fan like me. I wish I could shop here more often but they really need to step up in the game and have better sales and a larger selection like their counterparts south the border. As for service and staff, I visit this location frequently and for some strange reason, the staff seem to be really snooty. They seem to be in a state of disbelief that someone is buying their stuff! Regardless, I love their clothing and would buy the entire the store if I could :) read more

Hmm.. I was all hyped up to go here, and to be honest I felt it was a bit of a let-down. I was surprised to see so many things for the home, books, etc. I had no idea Anthropologie sold anything outside of clothing. Some things were cute, but easy to pass up. As far as clothing, I find the store a bit difficult to browse - I would rather shop online, but rumour is at Anthro you have to try everything on, since it sells different labels which all seem to run differently in sizing. On that note, the change rooms did look really nice. The only thing that really caught my eye was 1 cardigan - which was $140. I didn't see anything special about the fabrics, knit, etc to really make it worth the money - so I would assume the price tag has a lot to do with Anthropologie's popularity. Which, I understand, but won't shell the money out for. I am not completely writing this store off. I will probably check it out again in the fall to see some new pieces. But so far, its just underwhelming. read more

If I were a manager, I would do some quality monitoring of the store, particularly the check out counter and the lack of efficiency of staff. If you wonder why your company is losing money, you need to look no further. I would describe lining up to pay as a demeaning experience if ever there was one. You're standing in line like you're invisible and no one cares how long you wait. Staff may see you lining up but they make no effort to provide efficient service. They look at you and continue chatting and pretend you're not there. HELLOOOOO? Is anyone there? For the price of the items they sell, it's not worth the cost of humiliation as standing in line indefinitely surely is. Surely I can pay $100+ to go to the spa instead and come out feeling good about myself. A good brand name can't save a company from awful customer service! read more

I use to love shopping at Anthro until one day I walked in to find the petite section to filled with mix matched dishes. Is this now a flee market?? It certainly looks like one. The sales women were sympathetic (and short) and echoed my disappointment that the Ontario Stores will no longer carry petite clothes.
