I absolutely adore her artwork. The embroidery is so intricate and very beautiful. All the pieces i love are over 30K so out of my price range but she does have some pieces in the low thousands. One day i hope to own one! When you are walking along Royal St this is a must stop if you appreciate art.

The art scene in New Orleans is so different from the one in NYC. I never really got that into art. I think we need it, it's important, but it's not something that I ever really went out of my way to embrace. In NOLA art is more accessible, less elitist, and I chatted with one of the gallery organizers about that when I stumbled in here. The pieces here just floored me. I was lured in my James Browns Legs out front, and went straight to the quilt depicting the story. I had no idea any of that had happened, and Chris's work conveyed such an entertaining sense of humor and sarcasm, not to mention it was lovely work to look at. A lot of those tones come through in her pieces.

Loved this gallery do much that I went every day that we were in New Orleans. You could find something you missed in every picture with each visit. The story about James Brown's legs and art work to go along with it was fabulous. Each time I went there were different people working. They were all extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the artist and her artwork. Loved it. My only question would be about the taxidermy of the protected and endangered animals. How did you swing that?

This was such a memorable gallery that I had the luck to stumble upon during my short visit to New Orleans! The work is extremely well-crafted and visually complex, whimsical, and macabre all at once. There were a lot of pieces in this gallery space and the employee there was friendly. Wish I had some extra bucks to buy a piece or two!

So glad to have found this gallery while wandering the French Quarter. Simply put, this place makes me happy. Such wonderful fabric artwork with a touch of humor & an understanding of human nature. The gallery staff seemed to enjoy being there to share our experience. The whole space was filled with the quirky vibe of the artist, and it rubbed off on us. From the giant Christmas bell light fixtures and the waves up above, to the cool shadow box and James Brown's legs. Thought we were just going to duck in, and ended up spending quite a good while in this great place.

I always visit here when I come to NOLA. Amazing outsider art every time. It's free. Check it out.

Artists have their own booth, so you can view the transition in genre as you walk from one booth to the next. When I first walked in, I noticed the paintings on the walls, but there's everything from that to jewelry and hats. The majority of the jewelry is located centrally, in front of the counter, where they are less likely to walk away without being noticed. My favorites were the mixed media scenes and whimsical cat paintings by G. Lee, whose artwork I noticed in other parts of the city. Adorable cats looking straight at you, holding a beloved item in their paws. As I was visiting, there was an artist setting up shelves to present his artwork. He had someone assisting. The artwork is also sold at affordable prices. The woman at the counter was friendly and welcoming.

We visited during his cow phase and many of his canvases were of cows. He is renowned for his paintings of regional architecture and famous musicians and for designing numerous NOLA Jazz Fest posters and artwork. Many of his architectural pieces seem to defy gravity, as he departs from traditional renderings by painting the structures in arches for example. He utilizes exaggerated viewpoints and skewed perspectives so beautifully! His approach is whimsical, fun, and very engaging! For his paintings, he uses palette knives primarily, and this method results in such a dense, tactile quality to the paint, it is almost as if the paint is ice cream-like, and the viewer could just take a spoon to get the paint off the canvas and take a bite! This is my favorite approach to painting, and it takes quite the commitment by the artist to achieve this result! This lovely, accurate description from his bio sums it up: "His portraits of shotgun houses and Creole cottages, captured in layer upon layer of thick impasto paint, brimmed with color and energy and captured the essence of his subject." Quite the visionary and entrepreneur, Michalopoulos owns a house in the Burgundy region, started and stewards a foundation devoted to providing affordable spaces in NOLA in which artists can create, and live. In the 90s he opened a rum distillery, Celebration Distillation, the first craft rum distillery in the nation in over a century. Celebration features the "Old Orleans" label, and sadly, it suffered a fire, and is closed until further notice. Amazingly, he is primarily self-taught artistically, although he took a couple of art classes in NOLA. This gallery is spacious, it's 3 stories, and not pretentious at all. The staff are friendly, and you may engage with the art as long as you would like during their business hours.

Next week.... bookalopoulos shows up with a massive signature. Please check out the photo below. Damn ... another reason why I love this town!
