The beauty of Western Mass is summed up in the view of the Connecticut River from the bridge, especially during foliage season. But I digress, back to the Freight House, my favored stop on my tours. It's a worn place, antiques lining its broad porch and spilling over into the neighboring area with cement and stone yard ornaments. Don't be deterred! Inside you'll find rooms stuffed with antique brick-a-brac, but make your way to a stool at the food counter. Service is prompt and personable - well, of course, there's only a handful of stools. The prices are fair, and I love this unassuming oasis and the folks that work here, so I tip generously. I've sampled most of the menu items, and always been satisfied. But the hidden gems are the homemade pies. I love a good pie, and most pies don't measure up. I look for a great crust, flakey on top and bottom. Then I want a good filling, full of authentic flavor, not cloyingly sweet, or runny, or gelatinous. Tough to find? Yup! Found it here, at Freight House, every time. Be sure to look at everything before hand, we bought a bookcase for $75 then when we picked it up noticed that the back was falling apart. I don't believe most of the auctions have a reserve but I can't say for sure, in some cases they have gone down to $1 for a piece of furniture . The speed is pretty quick so you need to pay attention or you may miss the item you want. Some of the people that work here take it upon themselves to describe things to the nth degree when they bring them up but should really just stick to holding things .

The Sturbridge Flea Market is one shop in the larger Sturbridge Marketplace At the Falls building…read more It's on the higher floor, close to the road, so the higher you can park the closer you are (valuable advice when the sun is beating down in the summer). The store seems to be built with the wares of different vendors, but one central register to pay. They are split floors within the shop - a lower level with more modern collectibles, a higher level with clothing, and a main level with larger items. It's one of those places you have no idea what you're going to find and what treasure you'll walk out with.

They have barn sales open to the public on select days, but most other things are arranged for pickup at a mutually agreed upon time and date at the barn.
