We took a river cruise along the Danube and a 'must stop' is in Passau Germany. In reading through literature, about 500,000 people visit this small city that has about 50,000 full time residents. To say the least, this city is overrun with tourism. There are groups walking around everywhere, listening to their tour guides holding up the plastic 'lollypop' of all shapes and colors. Not far from the main square, we found a reasonably quiet street with a wonderful coffee shop and restaurant. Anton has two entrances, but we learned that they serve the same food. We actually came here twice in our day in Passau. We chose to sit inside for coffee and pastry and later, outside for lunch. The coffee and chai tea that we were able to enjoy along with the absolutely most extraordinary apple strudel were excellent. The staff were very helpful, guiding us to select what's best in the bakery. The atmosphere was comfortable. Clearly, nearly everyone here is a tourist, but it didn't have the feel of a tourist trap. We asked around and several people suggested that we return here for lunch. And so we did just that. Sitting outside we had the chance to watch the many tours and tourists walk by. The main downside was that it's legal to smoke outside in the EU, not inside. And there was a group of smokers several tables away. Not terrible, but could be better. For lunch we enjoyed the soup of the day, spinach dumplings and clams in pasta along with a side salad. Everything was very fresh, well seasoned, and truly delicious. As we had dessert and coffee earlier, we elected not to have them again. There are likely several good restaurants in Passau. This is the one we chose and we were very satisfied. One last suggestion, if you are in the city after about 5 PM, all of the tours and most tourists have left. If you choose to walk at this time of the day, you can really enjoy the beauty without the people walking everywhere around you. read more

My wife and I popped in to try the likor, a latte, and a serving of strudel. Everything was great! What was exceptionally good was the service! We were greeted warmly in German and when the host/waiter detected our American accents, and difficultly speaking German, he immediately transitioned to English. What a pleasant and professional gentleman! He also provided us with English menus. Awesome! The ambiance is amazing. Old world meets new world. This was a great spot to take a quick break before heading back to the boat. read more

Delicious! I got the Natural and every single thing was good. The eggs were cooked perfect, the jelly tasted so fresh and like they just made it in the back, smoked salmon and leek cream cheese were the perfect combo! I asked for a to-go cup for the macchiato I couldn't finish and apparently that's not a thing out here, but one of the waiters ran across the street somewhere just to grab us a cup instead of saying no! Found this cafe in Passau while on a river trip through Germany. Searched on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Once again, Yelp came through - great food and excellent atmosphere. You can sit inside, out front, or in the back on the patio. Not a large place, but not super crowded either. Anton is a delight - really enjoyed watching him work the drinks (coffee and tea concoctions). My husband had the Greek salad (traditional and yummy) and my sister and I split an order of Venison sausage with apple sauerkraut - delish. We also had the home-made lemonade (Scarlett O'Hara) and some of the home made flavored teas. They were good, but not what we were expecting - it was brewed tea mixed with juice over ice. Definitely recommend this place - and make sure you say hello to Anton :) read more

Caution: Review Doesn't Include the Food Itself This place may be great for singles, couples, or groups of adults. It was not family friendly. We went there having heard that the food was very good, but found that they could not accommodate our group of five (including three small children). They had no high chairs or boosters available, the seating was tight such that we couldn't wheel our stroller through and leave the baby in that, and the staff seemed quite frankly relieved that we didn't stay. My advice to families would be that you have other choices with very good food and very family-friendly service and amenities in the area. read more

Charming cafe in a quiet alley. I had the pork schnitzel with potato salad and my wife had the grilled chicken with roasted vegetables. Both were fresh and delicious. The schnitzel had a cranberry sauce that was very nice. Paired with a nice Chardonnay, lunch was slow and relaxing. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food and drink. read more
