Bought an AO Smith 900 water heater from Lowe's in November 2024. In December 2025 it leaked and had to be replaced (unit covered under warranty but not installation $1200). Now three months later the NEW THREE MONTH OLD water heater is leaking and needs to be replaced! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Customer service is just a broken record of they only cover the product not the installation! This company doesn't care about their customers....RIDICIOULUS! read more

I came here to see what people think of this water heater company, and surprised (but not unexpected) others have already given this company 1 star. M We got their water heater from Lowes about 4 years ago for a rental property. It's still under their 6 yr warranty. There's a LED light that flashes which tells you what part needs to be replaced. I called Lowes, who referred me back to the manufacturer. First call to AO Smith: a rep gave me a list of local companies that carry their part, and they would reimburse me for it. None of the companies in the list carry that part. And one # was to their competitor, Rheem. 2nd call: They offered to overnight one to my tenants, since I can't find any. 3rd, 4th 5th calls: Priduct was never received the next 2 days. I called for a tracking number and conveniently, their systems are down. They can do anything except provide a tracking number or know where the product is ( suspicion is kicking in ) 6th to I don't know ... 8th call (?) After being transferred to different departments, someone finally leaked out that after 5 days, the part wasn't even shipped yet. And I got one of the nastiest customer service reps in corporate America. She cut me off on every sentence. Tried to correct me before I can even finish talking. When I asked for the manager, she said they'll say the exact same thing. When I asked her name, she hung up. After 7 days, the part shows up at my tenants. I sent a well qualified repairman there and he spent hours trying to make it fit. Also, he said there's so much rust inside a 4 year old water heater, it's like way over 10 years old. It worked for one night. The next day, it does again. So after over a week of dealing with this sorry company, I ended up buying a new one from Home Depot. I wished there was no warranty so I didn't have to wait so much time on the phone with them. I don't know how they stay in business selling such cheap products and providing the worst service. read more

I purchased a hot water tank from Lowe's here in Augusta, Ga on Feb. 10, 2026. I had the unit installed on Feb. 12, 2026 and the unit didn't give me any hot water. I tried to return the unit back to Lowe's to change it out for another unit and was informed due to policy I needed to contact AO Smith in order for me to get a refund. I called AO Smith and informed the service tech what was going on with the unit and do you know the rude guy told me we probably had the temperature turned up to high and burned out the elements. I said, Sir there is no way those elements burned out like that so quickly especially when the temperature was set at 50 degrees and the temperatures were only turn up to 100 degrees. I ask for a local Plummer to come check the unit out and was given Busy B Pluming. I Called this company here in Augusta, Ga on Feb. 16, 2026 and met with a voice message informing me that they are no longer in service. I called AO Smith back to get another local available Plummer and was put on hold over 45 mins to an hour. I had to call the service guy I used to install my unit back out to my house and when he removed the original elements inside my unit they were both old and corroded as if someone returned the unit got the new elements out and replace the old rusty corroded ones inside. I had to come out of my pocket to purchase brand new elements and pay an additional $150.00 to have them stalled. This company is by far the WORST I have ever dealt with. I don't see how they are still in business and Lowe's need to stop selling their merchandise. I advise anybody looking for appliances to check the policy out before you purchase or buy from a local Plummer or appliance company. AO Smith Co. don't even deserve a 1 star which is how awful this company is. read more

This company is so bad that 1 star is overrating it. They do not stand behind warranty by actually charging for parts that they refer to as a core charge. Trying to contact the company directly has been impossible as they do not reply to e-mails sent through their website or pick up a phone. I have spoken to 3 different plumbing companies and all have stated to stay away from this company due to inferior backing of an already crappy product. I do not expect any support for my 4 year old water heater that we have spent far too much money on along with regular servicing but at least the word is out there about this company. read more

I am disgusted to have to write this review on a company such as AO Smith. I find it necessary because their quality of water heaters has gone way down. The company is resting on their laurels mainly their name and prior reputation. I am a victim of their quality now being substandard. My new water heater was leaking after only sixteen months of installation. One buys based on name and reputation--well no more! I will do what I can to steer people away from products made my this company starting now. read more

We had our water heater tank replaced 2.5 years ago (the brand was AO Smith) and it just busted 2 days ago and after being on hold for over an hour, we're told they're not going to replace it even though it should be UNDER WARRANTY as it was not even 3 years old!! We didn't want to deal with this garbage any more so we told the plumber we called to please install a new one and please make sure it's not an AO SMITH BRAND!! read more

My water heater is maybe 2 months old and is loudly beeping saying there's a temperature error. I've been trying to contact the company for assistance but can't get a ahold of anyone and further review has multiple ppl complaining that theyve spent hours and days unable to make contact. This company is going to end up with a lawsuit. Hot water is necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary home. Their poor business set-up doesnt get to take away my 3 kids rights to a safe sanitary home! read more

This is the first time I have written a bad review on a company and a lot of it has to do with the lack of customer service I received from the representatives over the phone and when reaching out to the email talktous@aosmith.com. Brian Price was the person who responded back in an email and completely disregarded the complaint I made about not getting the help I needed for my electric water tank. My issue was that I purchased a electric water tank that seemed to be having issues and I called to get some help from the technical representatives. I followed their instructions for troubleshooting and nothing was able to resolve my issue. I called the third time asking if there was a possibility it could be the water tank itself and was completely disrespected by the representative. They talked down to me as if I didn't know anything and I explained how I added the thermo expansion tank and the regulators that they suggested and the issue was still at hand. They completely dismissed my issue and said I need to hire a plumber. No empathy or assurance of help with this company whatsoever. I will never buy from this company again and I do not recommend this company to anyone so they don't have to go through a poor experience as I did.
