My…read moreoldest played several years ago and had an "ok" experience with the team/coaching/competition, etc. Back then they had no keeper program, except for Friday's where they just had 2 classed every Friday where they divided all the club keepers into 1 of 2 classes. The classes were way too crowded for much if any 1 on 1 coaching. We paid for private lessons as a result. We moved her over to NCFC at U13 where they provide 2 Keeper trainings a week with just 3-4 girls the same age group, so she got much better keeper coaching. Her team coach also played professionally on an international team. Our youngest daughter came out of "retirement" to play for a Wake FC classic U12 team for 2019-2020 season. Even given past experience with Wake we figured we would give them another shot as their practices were more convenient to see if our daughter was going to be committed to competitive soccer this time around after retiring at age 7 after 1 season. Our team coaching was OK, but often completely incorrect techniques taught about keeper position specifically which is not necessary unusual with coaches that played other positions. However this is why other clubs provide classic teams with 2 keeper specific trainings a week. While Wake FC does have a keeper coach now, they also assign him teams to coach so he cannot focus all his energy on keeper coaching, so most kids got left out of any real keeper training. Halfway through the fall season Wake FC brought in another keeper coach to run a couple trainings a week. Those trainings were a complete waste of time as the classes were again too large to provide technique correction so kids just out there practicing bad habits. It was quite painful to watch. We paid extra to attend weekly trainings with the largest club in the area, NCFC where coach to kid ratio was like 3-4 kids per coach, so kids got individual instruction. One of the main disappointments was Wake FC allowed an unqualified parent with no coaching credentials to help coach the team and run practices while the main coach was often not there. I know several parents complained, and nothing happened. So it was not surprising that the team played kick and chase soccer like a rec team and some basic fundamentals of soccer were not taught. I think we won the possession battle maybe twice in the whole season. I think some of the girls that moved to the another club with our daughter got more position/possession coaching in first day of team camp than they did all last season at Wake FC. Which makes sense, as there were two coaches on the field with maybe 12 girls and those coaches had played professionally and coached at NCAA level. I can't speak directly to boys program at Wake FC, but I can say that while the main keeper coach at Wake FC is good, he just can't provide the quality I think you would expect for classic fees as just one guy with teams to coach as well. So I would recommend other clubs in the area if your kid is serious about being a keeper and you don't want to supplement club fees with personal training fees. Team coaching is hit or miss with any club, but a club that would allow an unqualified parent who didn't even play in school much less have a professional career after, is a bit suspect for me on what they might be willing to get away with for quality of coach. There are other clubs in the area where coaches are required to get additional trainings to keep up coaching licenses and also have pretty deep professional playing and coaching experience here in the US as well as in Europe, so kids can learn to play the right way early. Though if you live in Holly Springs area Wake FC is super convenient, and could be a good way to dip the toe into competitive soccer, and allow kids to build relationships with local kids. This is why 2 stars instead of 1. Ting and Womble fields are convenient and good for Holly Springs. The Middle School and High school fields can be rough at times, but that is good practice too.

The management is also a major issue -- unresponsive and clearly playing favorites, which creates a tense and unprofessional environment. I've spoken to several staff members who seem overworked and miserable, which definitely trickles down into the member experience. Overall, it feels like the club is riding on its location and name, not on the quality of service or management. Very disappointing.

From the very beginning, the process was incredibly easy. When I reached out for information, they responded quickly, and once I picked the date and time, they had us signed up almost immediately. Everything was simple and stress-free! The party room was very spacious with plenty of room for a big group of kids. There was a table for all the food, another table for gifts, and even a ping pong table, which ended up being a HUGE hit with all the little ones who definitely weren't interested in sitting still for long! The biggest shoutout goes to Max, who absolutely ran the show and was AMAZING with the kids! He kept them engaged, made everything fun, and somehow even remembered most of their names so he could personally cheer them on during the activities. But then we played ball! (Is that slogan only used with baseball?) It was a vs Miami game and I was pretty impressed by the speed and skill demonstrated by both teams. With a dad who still plays the sport at age 54 and a brother who left the womb in cleats, I've seen my fair share of games. Though I ended up leaving at halftime (I'd spent 4 hours at the field!), I would have no trouble watching a full game here and not getting bored. I might leave a separate review for the facility; but for those reading this one, note that parking is $5; beers (mostly bud and miller) are $4. There are individual seats on the bleachers that cradle your bum. And there's a grill offering cheesy nachos and basic ballpark food.

However, watching the Carolina Rollergirls was an all new adventure. Must admit that seeing "Whip It" got us to investigate local roller girl teams. We did our research, became fans on facebook, and headed to the arena. The following was impressive. We waited in line for our tickets and headed inside the arena. People passing out books were friendly and helpful in giving you pointers on where to sit etc. Definitely come early and sit ringside, right on the concrete floor right beside the track. Yeah, you might get a skate to the face, but it is totally worth it. These ladies are fierce competitors. The battle we watched was amazingly intense and ended with everyone on their feet cheering on the 1 point deciding victory. It was unbelievable. Next time the Rollergirls are rolling out, make sure you get your a** to the arena and cheer these women on! You will not regret it!

It TOTALLY didn't disappoint, and it was really like old times again. We ate some junk food, browsed the names and bios of the new skaters who've joined the ranks over the years, geeked out over the evolution of the game and new strategies they were employing, and (per the usual), I started fantasizing about my future as a roller girl. Seriously, though, this is some of the best, most wholesome entertainment I can imagine. The Carolina Rollergirls have always done a great job at making roller derby an event for an entire family and for an entire range of ages. They've got plenty of great half-time events, mascots, and crowd interaction, and then on top of that, they're just awesome athletes competing at a really high level. These women are flat-out amazing. The best part about the Rollergirls, though, is how congenial they seem to be. Despite the high level of competition and the bruising nature of the sport, I've always gotten the impression that off the rink the teams hang out and really support each other. Derby-girls stick together. It's encouraging to see a group of women who a) kick ass at their sport and b) have each other's backs. Maybe the word I'm looking for is sportsmanship. And if I had a daughter (or a son, for that matter), I'd take them to see the Rollergirls set a great example.
