This is such a beautiful parish. The pews are designed in a half oval layout so you and they have a…read morelarge baptismal font in the back facing the main altar. My favorite place is the adoration chapel. It is so serene and cozy, you can really feel Jesus as you look at the blessed sacrament exposed. This church is so special to me as I used to be a part of their choir. I also like the courtyard where they have a few saint statues displayed. It was nice to see St. Therese and St. Anthony along with a rare statue I haven't seen anywhere else St. Anne and her daughter Mary (I have this prayer card but have never seen a statue of it in real life!). I didn't quite notice them here until I came the other day to pray. If you are in Merced, whether you are Catholic or not, come by and see this church and walk around their courtyard. It's a great place to take a break from our busy schedules. :-)

However the arrogance of the priest the last time I attended regarding it being the 'only' true church was pretty off putting, there are a lot of churches saving souls. Also, the pews were at least half empty. There are reasons why some churches are not full, we have somehow failed our children and are at least partly responsible for societal change regarding God. What I will add is that there is not a friendliness at Sacred Heart, you do not feel warm and welcomed, by the priest or the people. This was the church I grew up in the times I lived in Turlock as a child, I want to want to be there. Maybe it was being with my Grandma that made it special, maybe the priests are just tired. I attended 'Journey in Christianity' retreat which I believe is put on by Catholic laypeople. That retreat could teach the church a lot regarding humans.

The priest did not contact my grandpa week before hand and they gave us a replacement priest . Sounds like they took advantage of Grandpas $$$$ letting them do construction durning the service ..... throw a celebration of life instead of have a funeral service here !!!!!

I don't think I ever visited a new church on vacation and wished that church could be relocated to…read more where I lived. I felt that way about St. Patrick's during the two Masses I attended over the Christmas holidays. The homilies of both were memorable, the priests warm, personable, and welcoming. On Christmas Day our priest started the Mass late because he was chatting and didn't realize how late it was. To watch him you could tell he was obviously a good friend to many of the parishioners, and seemed to know everyone by name. My gay-dar pinged when he started Mass which might have been why I immediately liked him. (I love me some gays.) In fact, during the homily when he said "swaddling clothes... whatever THOSE are," I couldn't help but hope he'd slip a sing-song "fabu-lous!" next, although the only gays who do that are in movies. His homily was easily the best I've heard all year - fun and interesting to listen to and inclusive and welcoming. It reminded me of the joy of having a class with a really good professor you could listen to talk all day. The next Mass had a different officiant. He had a really interesting homily about the "Twelve Days of Christmas" song, and you could tell everyone was really listening. My family even talked about the homily in the car on the way home after Mass. The only minor quibble I had was that the priests stand right in front of the back doors of the church when Mass is over so you can't avoid shaking hands with them. I figure priests shake as many hands as politicians so I couldn't wait to get home and sanitize. Also, the front steps are really steep. I note this because my dad walks with a cane and they were a bit much for him. The choir, and in particular the main cantor, had a really impressive soprano range. The guy on piano who resembled Clarence Thomas had a really nice deep voice as well. Except for Clarence Thomas and a smattering of Mexicans, this church was full of honkeys. And lots and lots of old people. And those old people might not know a friend of Dorothy even if he preached right in front of them.

This church is a 2nd version of the original in downtown Modesto. The priests and staff are always friendly and helpful. The masses are acceptable lasting a little over an hour and the gospel interpretation applies to today and educational. They even have a 25 min. education for the young kids in the middle of mass! This reduces fatigue and restlessness for children. I knocked 1 star because it's often difficult to hear the main person talk. They tried to reduce this by adding carpets but the echo is prevalent and distracting. Apparently the architecture thought of mostly everything else other than how sound travels. Additional stain glass windows would have also been better.

Half the people still trying to catch up with the caravan. Other than that, this is a nice church.
