Garlic/cheese flatbread was amazing. My smoked haddock and spinach risotto was delicious. Everyone in our group enjoyed their food.

Had a quick lunch. Good service and nicely prepared food. Great vale at £11.50 for two courses.

Set mid way up Whiteladies Road, the restaurant's name is reflected in the décor, with light flooding through the space and a pale blue theme throughout.

So far so good. This is a new restaurant at the site of an old Italian restaurant called Zio, and…read moreeven though the interior is laid out the same, they've spruced the place up a bit and have made it look a bit trendier. It seems like there are new owners, as none of the original staff are here. We stopped by on an early Sunday evening after a long journey from Cheshire and ordered soft drinks and some pasta and pizza. Both were nice enough, and value for money was great. Even the drinks didn't cost an arm and a leg, so we escaped having paid just a few pennies over £20 for both meals. On arrival, our waiter struggled a little to communicate with us, but we figured out that he was trying to tell us that Sunday roast had finished and that only the main menu was available. We were seated at a clean table and presented with a small basket of bread and butter. The table was too small for the main dishes, so some clearing had to be done before we could get stuck in. He didn't tell us about the specials until after we'd decided what to have, so he was a little rusty, despite being older than your average Bristol waiter. All in all, it was a good value dinner at a swanky new restaurant in which we were the only guests at about 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. It will be nice to return and try the wine list, and see what it's like when there are more people and a bit more atmosphere. Will keep you posted!

Vincenzo's was high on my list of Italian restaurants for a long time. A friend introduced it to…read moreme, describing it as a strange, quirky place that you either really like or dislike. I walked in here, and I most definitely liked. The walls were stuck with hundreds of postcards, and there were what looked like rattan wine canisters almost completely covering the ceiling. The postcards are most fascinating things to look at while you're sitting there waiting for your food. These touches give the place such character. The menu here is so vast - they do pastas, pizzas, fish, chicken, veal, steaks and salads! Something for everyone! Their starter of Calamari Alla Giuliana; squid in a tomato, peppers & chilli sauce was something I liked, but their Calamari Fritti; deep fried squid was rather chewy and not so nice. Their pizzas are good too, they are quite big and you can size them up by ordering any of them as a Familiare, which are 12 to 14 inches! This place continued being my favourite Italian, until one day I ordered the Risotto Vegetariano and was so disappointed when I took my first bite. Weirdly, the rice they used wasn't risotto rice, but just plain rice. I ate my meal in confusion and should have asked them about it but I somehow didn't. Since that day I haven't been back there, because I can't understand why an Italian restaurant would serve me risotto, that wasn't risotto. Still good for pizzas and the rest of the grub though. Just maybe don't order the risotto.

Vincenzos is a great place for a romantic meal as the intimate environment and gentle local music will put you in the mood for love (as well as the wine that your waiter will keep flowing). The pizzas come with all manner of toppings so there's bound to be something to suit everyone. Just make sure you save room for desert - because one look at the menu and you'll know it's not something you want to miss.

This is why our experience at Caffe Fiorentina was so disappointing. You can do a lot better at home! We were hypnotised by the illy signs in the window (it's our favourite coffee), so we made a special trip for a Saturday morning breakfast. It was nice to be greeted with a smile, though it was difficult to place our order; there's a language barrier to overcome, so try not to deviate from pointing at the menu. We ordered at the counter (not sure if there's any table service) and I stuck to something simple, simply because there wasn't a lot to choose from that was actually Italian on the menu. Most of it is English through and through, when it would have been nice to see fennel sausages instead of Cumberland, for instance. How about toasted Ciabatta instead of a cheap, sliced loaf? A bacon butty was ordered, two cappuccinos and some toast and butter. The bacon butty wasn't too bad, but it was ordinary sliced white, while the toast was spectacularly awful. How do you get toast wrong? It had been left to sit in the toaster, so had become French within a few minutes, then was sparsely lubricated with Flora (that's not Italian butter, by the way). Oh well, I left it after one bite, didn't finish the coffee, headed home and made myself a fresh cappuccino and a buttered, toasted cinnamon bagel. Awesome! Of course, I was also a tenner lighter than I was earlier (their credit card machine broke down, too). I want to say nice things for a new business, but teething problems aside, it seems like the core business model is 'British cafe' rather than 'Italian deli delight', and unless that changes, it may not succeed on a road that boasts much better breakfast options.

It looks funky and fresh from the outside and they have some big signs advertising that they sell illy coffee. So we decided to give it a go for breakfast and it was was disappointing. We ordered two cappuccinos, toast and a bacon sandwich. Non of them were great, the bacon buttie being the pick of a bad bunch. If you're looking for an Italian cafe - then you'll be disappointed. Hopefully they will improve, but not sure we'll go back.
