Member discount, hurrah. Also a nice little cafe area (only drawback the Lavazza) with healthy, not so healthy, and kid friendly selections. It's half an hour walk from my house and I still love it. What I have tried on numerous occasions are their squash courts. There are 10 international standard squash courts including a four walled glass show court. The courts are the best that we play on in our league (on a par with Moorabbin). They are quicker than most around the circuit but I'm a fan. If I lived next door to MSAC, I would play a hell of a lot more sports here. A great venue for all sports.

There are also no burly muscle guys being weirdos in the corner which is great as that is what usually deters me from joining a unisex gym. Opening hours are also good - until 10pm! The class is different each time (definitely not Bikram!), and both the sanskrit and common names for poses are used. The instructor moves between students and helps with poses, uses fun - though low-energy - tunes, and offers multiple options for different skill levels (as an arm-balance newbie, I really appreciate an atmosphere that encourages development while doesn't judge newer or less-strong students). During my time there, I was working fully remote from home due to my mental health and only leaving the house to swim at the centre and do grocery shopping once a week. I also drove everywhere. Although I am a little overweight, I am generally physically healthy and don't get sick easily. Since swimming at Eltham Leisure Centre, I have experienced various ailments each week, including a dry patch on my left eyelid which my GP thinks is a fungal infection (I have never experienced such a thing in my life), conjunctivitis, tonsilitis, and a ten-day cold, including a horrendous sore throat, headaches and fatigue. A couple of weeks into my use of the swimming pool and I noticed it was visibly extremely dirty. There were debris floating around everywhere including a used plaster, white bodily tissue and loads of sand at the bottom of the pool. I complained to the duty manager (red-haired young man) who informed me the vacuum had been broken for a week! I couldn't believe it. Surely this was a safety issue? The swimming pool should not have been open during that time. I waited four days before returning to the swimming pool (I had a target I needed to meet for mental and physical health) and apparently the vacuum was working again but the pool was still visibly dirty, only a little less than the week before. On another occasion, there was an awful smell as soon as I walked through the barriers. The air felt thick and unclean, and it was difficult to breathe. It seemed like there was a lack of ventilation/clean air. During week six when I was suffering from the cold (mentioned above), I cancelled my membership in anger. I had joined the Better Gym so I could get fit and healthy but instead, I've just become sick in many different ways. I emailed a complaint via the website and the Operations Service Manager responded to say they were doing the regular checks and the water is clean enough but clearly it isn't. I also posted on the Nextdoor app and a lot of people have agreed with me that Eltham Leisure Centre is filthy and they have left. Since then, I have contacted Better Gym and asked for a refund as the service they have provided has been extremely poor - to the point of dangerous as I was getting physically sick and this was aggravating my depression and anxiety - and they said they MAY offer a refund if I got a note from my GP. Getting a note from the doctor for a refund costs £30 so I sent them copies of medication receipts which confirms that I at least had to buy several medications (eye drop from my conjunctivitis and steroid creams for the fungal infection). They then offered a refund of £33 which I declined and insisted on a full refund of around £70. I received a one-liner to say I needed my GP to confirm I got sick from using the pool, however, while the doctor can confirm my symptoms, I'm not sure they can say for definite it is from using the swimming pool. You can only confirm this by doing a thorough investigation, which is not feasible and also, impossible now as the time/situation has passed. Better Gym has failed spectacularly and should refund the whole amount - not only for my physical issues but for the mental distress it caused me. I was relying on swimming frequently to lose weight, get fit and manage my mental health. I had just come off antidepressants and needed a simple routine - work from home and swim - and this worked for a couple of weeks until I noticed that I was getting a new ailment every week due to using the dirty swimming pool and facilities. Better Gym offered me hope but only made it harder for me to manage my life. As a result, I left Better Gym and searched for other swimming pools in the area but this was another challenge that I did not need to take on when trying to manage my mental health by living a simple life. Considering Better Gym is a successful chain gym and it is shameful that they are unwilling to refund the small amount of around £70 for failing to provide the service they have promised and putting my (and others) health at risk. People join leisure centres to get fit and healthy, not sick and this is what you can expect by joining Eltham Leisure Centre and other Better Gym facilities.

Personally speaking I've experience some first class health club action and these guys don't measure up and they are also all overseas. In my past life I have worked across many Fitness Firsts such as Victoria Gardens, Richmond, Chadstone QV Platinum and now frequently alternate between Richmond, Melbourne Central, Doncaster Platinum, Collins St & Bourke Street as a paid member. To be honest it's not the 'friendly' receptionist service or its convenient locations, yes they all part and parcel of an average health club but its instructors like Brandon and his dedication to the cause. Brandon offers that 'no bullshit' approach to group fitness classes and it works, the guy pulls up to 90 members consistently every Sunday for one specific Body Attack Class at the Richmond Club location. It's like a scene from Glee, minus the wheel chair. His massive numbers are a true testament to his work style enthusiasm and member rapport. No customer care manager aided in building his profile, this guy knows how to instruct and always gives it 100% so you may get 100% out of your work out. Brandon conducts about 20 classes a week that includes classes at other well-known gyms & his repertoire doesn't focus solely on Body Attack. Despite how run down or tired he may get you can always expect consistent results from Brandon every time.

This club is an example of why I am a Fitness First member. Friendly greeting from reception every morning. Big spaceous area and heaps of equipment to choose from. There is a gymnastics area, weights, stretch, group fitness, hot yoga, cardio machines, spin class. In my eyes if it also have a pole for me to practice pole dancing, then it is the perfect but other than that, it's pretty close. Oh the steam room is also really good.

South Pacific Health Club have personal training available as well as group fitness classes. The great thing is they also offer a free trial voucher on their website where you can visit the gym, speak to the trainers and get a feel for the environment. There is a good variety of group fitness classes, with some modern ones like body barre and kettlebell. Occasionally there are meditation classes on a Friday night for a gold coin donation. There are plenty of family activities at this YMCA. Karate and gymnastics classes for kids, and gym and group fitness classes for the adults. All the personal trainers and staff are very friendly and learn all the customers names, a good community feel. Memberships here aren't the cheapest you will find, but I guess that's because there's not much competition around this area.

Compared to other gyms out there it's a no frills operation, elevated by the dedication and enthusiasm of the trainers. They infect the club with the energy. It's best for weights and weight machines, everything being clean and well maintained and quickly attended to if something is broken. The only thing missing from my selfish perspective is a stair master. They don't run classes (such as pump, combat ect) but the trainers run their own version, with kettle bells and boxing on regular offer. Talk to the trainers - they know their stuff. The Jetts price model is absolutely reasonable and I think some of the best value out there. They also have reciprocal rights between all Jetts gyms, join one, join them all. With 24 hour access, it's pretty good value for money. Head down and see Jesse and his crew, they are always friendly and willing to show you the best way to do things.
