Just overall amazing service and knowledgeable staff. We got our first fish tank (40 gal) and have been really trying our best to start off correctly. We came in and both Austin and Anthony on separate occasions took time to really breakdown what we have in our tank now what goes well and what we need for a successful happy tank. I got crabs! Baby crabs that is. Lol So the day before yesterday, I bought a few fresh water crabs, snails and plants for my aquatic turtle tank. And today when I was arranging some of the rocks, I noticed a bunch of baby crabs crawling around the plants and driftwood. . Talk about surprised! 11/24/2024 - This store has been open for 67 years. I often come here to buy a Turbo Snail to clean my salt water fish tank in order to reduce or eliminate algae (Brown color) off fish tank glass. It is hard to find a place to buy either a Turbo Snail or one gallon of salt fish water in San Fernando Valley or other neighborhood. Store staffs are knowledgeable and friendly. read more

It's impossible to be in a bad mood once you walk in those doors. The store is beautiful! The fish are healthy and well cared for. The staff are knowledgeable about everything from water parameters, compatibility of different types of fish, food, and proper filtration. My husband has been talking about wanting a saltwater tank for quite a while, and I am thinking of perhaps getting him one for the holidays- we used to have a fresh water tank for my kids, so I decided to just set it up, get some goldfish and if he seems to really be into fish, I would surprise him in December with a nice saltwater set up. I filled the tank last week, to let the water sit, and yesterday I pulled some of the water into a glass bowl for testing and transport of a few goldfish. Since Petsmart is close to my house, I went in there-the fish looked bad, had a terrible experience with the people who work in the fish department (I actually felt bullied and belittled by them) and ended up walking out without anything. I was telling a friend of my experience above and he said I should head over to Aquarium City. I headed over there-and was happy to see healthy fish in clean tanks. And super helpful staff that answered my questions without making me feel like an idiot for asking them. As far as they knew I was only getting a couple of goldfish. No idea of my possible plans for anything in the future. All of the floor people and counter folk were friendly and helpful-no pressure, and just -nice. A pleasure to be around. They took time to do what looked like a science experiment to test the water I brought in and said it was perfect. Jason took time to help me get my two little goldfish, bagged them in plenty of water I headed over to the counter, asked some questions-no pressure on any purchases, just suggestions. I was treated the same way as if I was buying an expensive tank and supplies-as a valued customer. I do not know if I will be getting the saltwater tank-time will tell. But I can tell you that if I do, I will be getting it from Aquarium City. And I will tell my friends about them as well read more

Absolutely greatest fish store I've been to in years. I have had a fresh water tank for some time and decided to start a salt water tank with some basic knowledge. From the very start of the process they have helped in tremendous ways. Every single fish I now have is from them and will only be from them. It's bee 4 months and I don't regret my decision of giving them my business. Not only are they very much knowledgeable they are the friendliest people I've given my money to. They also recently set up a sump for me because the tank I got was passed down from a friend and had no built in returns or intakes. I found this place from my brother and I will slowly transition him from a fresh water only tank to owning a salt water as well. So please continue to take my money! read more

This store is a hidden gem! My husband and I got an aquarium and we're looking for some unique fish to add and their selection is endless! We got a cool albino Pleco, really pretty guppies, 2 gold koi for our outdoor pond, and lots of healthy water lettuce for shade outside. The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable , and we appreciate that they take the time to answer our questions about set up and care. I really wanted to buy freshwater puffer fish since they were so cute to add with the guppies and the employee advised me not to due to them potentially eating the guppies so it's great that they are honest rather than just wanting to profit on fish. read more

A bit on the expensive side when it comes to rats I'm not sure the prices for mice or the crickets as I only came here because my usual reptile store was out of stock on medium rats. I got a medium size rat and was charged $12.I usually pay $7 for a medium rat. Other than that this shop is pretty cool they have basically everything you need for both reptiles and fishes. read more

Every time I buy fish here, they die and my other fish get sick and die. They have no proper knowledge of fish or how to take care of the tanks. One person actually admitted they forgot to tell us something to put in the water and then wouldn't replace anything. The customer service is terrible and the lack of knowledge on top of that is frustrating. After telling them he of ladies that worked there that we hadn't added fish in 6 months, everyone was alive and well, as soon as we added the new fish, we had 10 d we fish in a matter of 4 days. She proc was see to tell me the chemistry must be off and in that case they can't help me. How would the chemistry change other than adding their sick fish?! And again, this happens EVERY time we buy fish from this place. The fact that we've had better luck with petsmart is astounding. The lack of accountability and poor customer service is just the cherry on top of the sick fish. I have literally never written a review on yelp, but at some point a business should be held accountable for their poor product and customer service. I wish I could Give a zero. read more

I really like coming here because they carry things you can't just find at Petco or Amazon, like Ich-X and a bigger variety of healthier aquarium plants. I also think they have healthier fish simply because they are strictly a fish and reptile store. I was maybe upsold on some items, like the hang on filter when I could've been sold a sponge filter, but I'm happy with the purchases I made and I don't mind spending a little more money here so I can support a small business. I also appreciate how knowledgeable everyone is and how helpful they are. I often leave tips because the education I get helps me so much. I haven't had any weird experiences or bad plants yet, and I only have my one betta son (planning on getting another soon) so I don't have lots of experience buying tons of fish. But I feel like the fish are better cared for here than at chain stores. read more

I want to start out by saying that my overall experience with Aquarium City has been enjoyable. Most of the staff has been friendly, helpful, and attentive, however this review is based on an unsavory altercation my family had with an employee in the parking lot on the afternoon of June 14th. We had just pulled into a parking spot in the adjacent paid lot and were proceeding to exit our vehicle. My father in law is 74 and has a bad hip, so exiting the backseat can sometimes be a bit of a hassle. Unfortunately while he was getting out, he accidentally hit the car parked next to us a few times, nothing serious, just a few light taps against the bed of the truck next to us. Well, the truck just so happened to be occupied by an employee of Aquarium City, and he proceeded to get out of his vehicle and accuse my father in law of deliberately hitting hit truck. At first we thought he was kidding, but he continued to press the matter. This employee is a fairly large, overweight balding man with an overgrown goatee, who thought he could use his size to intimidate an elderly man for an incredibly insignificant mark on his car, until I chimed in and shut it down. I'm incredibly disappointed in the actions of this employee and I'm very confused why he thought it was appropriate to act like this on the job. Anyway, aside from this unpleasant moment, I highly recommend this store to anyone looking for assistance with their aquarium! read more

There are at least five aquariums between my house and aquarium city, and aquarium city is my go to when the crap hits the fan. I literally drive from Glendale to Canoga Park just to seek Julian's council. I have two established tanks with livestock in them. I added some expired bacteria I purchased from Amazon (ugh) and my tanks cycles crashed! First off, he knows his stuff and is passionate about the hobby that he is a joy to talk to. Listen carefully to what he says and recommends, and you'll be back on your way to stocking healthy fish in no time. His entire staff is knowledgeable, cordial and friendly as well. And this store will never upsell you. His prices are more than fair. If you're just keeping a couple of bettas in a bowl then shop at a petco.
