I went there with my family to rent kayaks for a guided tour of the harbor. Do yourself a favor and show up 30 minutes late. If you had the same guide that we did you will hear 30 minutes worth of the most painful self-promotion pitches, cliches, and/or time sucking stories that you could ever imagine. We didn't actually touch a kayak until 1 hour after the tour was supposed to start. So unless you are mentally challenged and/or have the patience of a saint, skip the intro if at all possible. Once we got out on the water we had a perfect day and a beautiful kayak tour. The gear is all relatively new and, if not, very well maintained. No gripes there. If you have kayaked a lot before or own your own kayaks you will be severely annoyed at the pace of the introduction and tour, but I can't entirely blame them as they are catering to the lowest common denominator as far as experience and athletic ability. And there aren't many other outfitters (if any at all) that leave right from the main dock in the harbor. read more

We went on the half day afternoon kayak trip. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable. He taught us that seals have a different blood type so they can hold their breath for up to 30 min. The kayaking was also incredible. Because this location is farther out, it is much less crowded. We were the only kayakers the entire 4 hours. I highly recommend them! read more

We booked the Porcupine Adventure for a Saturday afternoon, our final of three kayaking trips during our ten day stay in Maine. We were a little nervous that Aquaterra would be more "touristy" than we would want to deal with. But all our fears were calmed once we met our guide, Jeff. We were lucky enough to be the only ones signed up for the tour that afternoon, so our trip turned into a 3.5 hour adventure led by this great guide. The wildlife we saw was excellent - bald eagles, seals, porpoises and a lot of birds. We paddled a total of eight miles through crazy wind and high seas and had the time of our lives! I have no doubt that even if we hadn't been the only ones on our trip, it still would have been a great experience. Beginners should know that Aquaterra did the most thorough safety instruction we've ever had on a tour, including practicing how to get out of the boat if it tips over. Kudos to them and Jeff for a great end to our vacation! read more

Very reasonable and perfect for newbies and skilled kayakers alike. The gear was in good condition. They made newbies and skilled individuals feel right at ease and were excellent at remembering names. Highly suggest bringing or buying a bottle of water. We went on a guided tour of the Porcupine Islands. We did 4 miles RT. We saw an eagle, a seal and some deer. Our tour guide was excellent and they are very concerned about safety here, so that is what makes this perfect for beginners that can catch on quick. Really suggest bringing a waterproof go camera with you. You start the tour by getting your gear and some basic safety info. This is bare bones necessary information. Next, you go outside and they sit you in your boat and show you how to seal up and get out in case of a flip. They also have a brief instruction about how to steer and use your oars. This is very handy and is required. This process took about an hour. Please note that cash tips are suggested at the end of the tour. Had we known this, we would have popped off at an ATM before. Perhaps this is something they could add to their website? This was cheaper and more available than the Kayak tour in SW Harbor. It was about $74 for 2 adults. Rather reasonable. I would do this again and reccomend it. read more

Took a tour with Danny last night from 6:30-8:30.. Guys-this place is a must visit while you are on the island!! The people who work there are so friendly, our guide was very friendly, fun and knowledgable. He told us about the islands, history and everything in between, making the tour not only beautiful but fun. No worries if you are a beginner-you are in great hands at this place. This was such an amazing time! We were on a family vacation in the area and actually stopped here to ask them about something else and ended up signing up because it looked so cool! The double kayaks were perfect as our two boys could then each paddle with a parent or just rest if they got tired... Our guide, Dave, was so fun and so great with stories and local knowledge to include wildlife both in and out of the water. He was so awesome and engaging with our boys as well! And I am so sorry that I can't remember his name :( but the bus driver was super friendly/nice too! Totally recommend this company for a fantastic paddle on the sea! read more

I took the 8am tour. There were 10 of us..a full tour. You spend about 1/2 hour learning how to paddle, about the gear, talking about where you will go, getting in the kayak, what to do if you have problems, etc. etc. All in all, not bad for the comfort level some people might need. Anyway, we were so lucky because the water was like glass that day. We kayaked around the porcupine islands and our guide was just wonderful. A teacher off season at the local high school and a California transplant. He was so pleasant and nice, he made the tour! A great way to start your morning. read more

Did a 2 hour guided tour during our stay in Bar Harbor and had a great experience. We even saw a baby bald eagle. This is the way to do it if you want to Kayak in Frenchman's Bay which is top 10 kayaking spot in the world. Have fun. read more

This was our first sea kayak tour. Our tour guide was Travis. Because the weather wasn't so great all weekend, there were only four of us on the tour. My boyfriend and me and two other girls. Travis walked us through the gear, equipment and other safety measures before we started to paddle. Even tough it was a 3 hour tour, we (boyfriend actually) decided to end it half an hour early because he wasn't feeling so well. We had over 2 straight hours of paddling so that was plenty given the heavy fog around the islands. Despite the weather conditions, it was a great experience. We saw a bald eagle, foxes, some puffin-like animals. To paddle in complete fog/mist is something else. Travis engaged us in conversation throughout the tour and gave us some good background/history when applicable about Bar Harbor. I didn't give the full 5 stars because I think it could have been even better if we had better weather. read more

We're still smiling about our sunset sea kayak tour last night! I went with my husband, 16yo son, and 13yo daughter in two tandem kayaks. My husband and son are the most physically fit, but the tour was completely doable for me and my daughter as well (although I'm a bit sore this morning- it was worth it!). My daughter is not the athletic type, and to see her enjoying herself and doing her best to paddle along was wonderful! Despite the fog, we got a distant glimpse of the eagle's nest and could hear the baby chick squawking. The fog was beautiful and made the trip feel more adventurous. The waves were really fun to paddle through and were our favorite part. By the end of the trip, the fog had lifted and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset through the clouds. We even got to paddle underneath a docked catamaran right before docking at the harbor. Our tour guide was Devon- friendly, knowledgeable, and interacted well with our group of various experience levels (11 total, from beginner to experienced). Don't forget to tip your guide- although not necessary, it is much appreciated, I'm sure! (Special thanks to the guy running the desk- neglected to ask his name, but he was wonderful as well!) read more

As absolute beginner kayakers my wife and I went on a two hour "sunset tour" around two of the Porcupine Islands. Travis, our guide, gave us all the equipment we needed and gave a quick lesson on navigating. After 15 min we were down on the dock and getting in the water. We saw the islands in an intimate way that a lot of people miss out on being on the larger noisier boats. Our group was six people, split into 3 tandem kayaks(I think solos are available also) and Travis did an excellent job showing us scenery, discussing the town and area as a whole, and suggesting restaurants and attractions to do. Our guide was a local and knew of some hikes and attractions that we hadn't read about in a guidebook so it was great to check those out. On our trip we saw eagles, deer on the islands, and a seal decided to check us out as we paddled! The entire staff we dealt with was very friendly, and I was also pleasantly surprised at the price, I was expecting more. read more
