Aesthetically a few notches up from your standard dark and dingy newsagents these shops are bright, airy and full to the brim with mags, papers, stationary and confectionery. The fellas in this shop (Aleef's is run as a franchise) always had time for a friendly chat and could serve faster than I think I've ever seen anyone serve before. One or two items seem a little pricey but then again most shops seem to bump there prices up in central Manchester these days. I read recently of some rather spurious actions amongst the higher echelons of the business which I won't go into here, although I'm surprised the business is still running (and as busy as ever). They seem to be as dominant in the city as the likes of Nero and Subway, but at the very least these are home grown guys.

Well stocked with sweets and chocolate for all ages including a traditional penny sweet stand and jars of sweets. You can buy two ounces or a quarter of these sweets including old favourites like Pontefract Cakes, Treacle Toffee, Murray Mints, Midget Gems, Eclairs and many, many more! Excellent selection of magazines and the staff are very helpful, they can order magazines on request and even save them for you if you want it regularly. They also deliver papers and magazines to you door (requires setting up an account) They sell stationery items pens, rulers, notebooks, pads of paper, envelopes (including large and padded). Also, at the reaar of the shop is an area dedicated to cards and gift wrap. Photocopies are black and white only, for A4 (8p per sheet) and A3 (16p per sheet). Easy parking right outside the shop. I used to live in a tenement flat in the west end and all the crappy weekly papers were dumped at the bottom of the stairs except this one. Weird. Owned by Trinity Mirror who are also in charge of The Daily Record and the Sunday Mail, you would presume the fact The Glaswegian is free would encourage the journalists who write for it to slack. However, it is actually a very smart publication covering news and events in Glasgow. The website is better than some national newspapers, particularly the sports coverage which features weekly video interviews with athletes. Handy when you can't find a copy of the newspaper itself.

It is a slightly more classy read than its tabloid rivals The News of the World. Although, that isn't saying much. My favourite bit of the Sunday Mail is the magazine supplement which lists all the just announced gigs. Frank Pilkington's horoscopes are also eerily accurate.

The Sunday Mail is the kind of newspaper I would never buy, yet if I saw someone had left it on a…read moretrain seat I'd be more than happy to flick through. Like most tabloids, it excels with its sports coverage, particularly in terms of slightly leftfield football features. The Seven Days supplement is also a good read, particularly as it is the first to announce all the latest gigs. I'm not sure if I would agree with the "slightly more classy" assertion of the previous Yelper. This paper still includes its fair share of sleaze and often I wonder how many of the news journalists can sleep at night. Nevertheless, it serves a purpose and remains one of Scotland's most popular Sunday papers.

The Echo is remarkable. It can take anybody involved in either a global news story or historical…read moreevent and before you can say 'but, hang on...' they've found a link that connects them to Liverpool. Obviously the exceptions are people who have stated they aren't that fussed on the city/the north. Then all connections are hurled out the window and the bastard becomes about as linked to Liverpool as Pocahontas was to Robert Mugabe. You've got to love the Echo though. It's a proper paper and everything but it always feels one hurried deadline away from publishing a story about your next door neighbour, Brenda (yes yours specifically) who can't find the remote control or wants to know the answer to five across. It's the most mainstream, provincial paper in Britain. Also on some days, for reasons seemingly governed by the heavens, you'll find stories and photos involving people known to you personally. I like those days. Makes me feel popular. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to check for my surname in the obituaries. It's a hobby of mine.

The Echo is the local paper serving the Liverpool area. There are other smaller local papers but…read morethis is the best of them. The Echo is available to buy 5 days a week and there are 3 editions each day. Every day has a different special focus for example a jobs section on Thursday and Monday. There are also editions focusing on entertainment, sports and cars. The echo has various sections which appear in each edition such as classified ads, letters, crosswords, sports, horoscopes, health, announcements and many more. The news is focused on the local area rather than national news, unless it is something very important. It is a good paper to find out about issues in your local area which may impact on you. The Echo is available in every newsagents you go into in the Liverpool area. The only time you would not be able to buy it is if they run out which can sometimes happen. There are also a few street vendors left who sell the echo, shouting eck-oooooooooooooo periodically. The Echo is a great paper but can be a little lacking in reporting national news stories.
