The guy working said they were working on a new book about the mascot goat they have meeting the Rougarou that lives here and they become friends. The city of Houma does have an annual Rougarou Festival that is quite thrilling.

The place is worth a stop if you like touring 18th century homes and stepping into a bit of American history. For a few bucks you can take a guided tour for about an hour and stroll along the grounds. It is not as expansive or expensive as some of the tours along the Mississippi, but it does stand out from the growing modern city of Houma and its neighboring strip subdivisions.

I purchased his memoirs and had some very candid conversation with him in regards to the plantation and slave quarters surrounding this delightful old store. I was greeted, asked to sign the guest registry and told they accept donations and told to walk around. They are cash only, which I was reminded of several times while here. I was also informed many times (I stopped counting at 5) that they were having a meeting, but I should sign the guest registry, make a donation and walk around and just pretend they weren't there. It was funny the first few times. After I stopped counting, I shoved $1 in the donation bin and left. Super cute place. Signs all over that it is a museum, don't touch, and items had price tags. Not all items had price tags. There was just so much going on here, item wise and people wise. I walked around some outside and it was all very lovely.

I joined the yearly membership so my sons and grandchildren can come back all year long. I inquired about the person who put this Military Museum together. I also ask if he would be in this day. They told me, "maybe". He did show for a few minutes to take pictures and a meet & greet. What a wealth of knowledge he had! I hope they keep this museum open forever. Located just off the banks of the Atchafalaya River this a place where man has learned to co-exist with Mother Nature the city is about seven below sea level in many areas and flooding has been a part of living next to such a mighty river that is a strategic part of a major flood control network. The four flood-walls in the Morgan City area were constructed of steel sheet pilings driven to an average depth of -70 feet.  The above ground portions were capped with concrete.  Gates in the flood-walls will normally remain open to accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic, but will be closed when floods threaten the area. There aren't many places you can travel in and around the city where these giant walls aren't visible which shows the extent of the flooding risk. But don't let your focus on the flood wall sway you from enjoying everything Morgan City has to offer the culture and food is in abundance around every corner and down every street, one thing to note is how many of the neighborhoods are named and dated on signs as you transition throughout the city which shows how this city was developed, this is still a small town with a population of just over 12,000 residents and is filled with architecture that rivals many cities so doing a driving tour will reveal some surprises that you won't want to miss...
