Carnival in San Francisco is coming up this Memorial Day weekend and many countries are represented through entertainment and food. One street which Carnival parade passes by is 16th street. Walking on 16th street you will find many different types of cafes and restaurants. There are some restaurants which have been there for decades and some there for years. You will find cuisines from China, Philippines, Thailand , El Salvador , Vietnam, Spain, Italy , Mexico ,Pakistan, and some Americana bites like the Pittsburgh sandwich( from Pennsylvania not California). There is one place which is named after a South American dish where you can enjoy food from Venezuela and it is called Arepas. Walking down memory lane by strolling down 16th street where the young Don Juan grew up in San Francisco I landed at Arepas. Inside there are lots of tables and a full bar along with a wine bar which serves Rosé , Malbec from Argentina , Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile , and Pinot Noir from California ( like Don Juan Pinot Noir). On the menu you will find chicharron ceviche with plantain chips. You will also find Venezuelan empanadas with cheese , beef, and plantain Maduro ( not talking about Maduro the ex-President of Venezuela). They also have hella arepas. The arepas are often compared to tacos and pupusas. I find them a bit different since they are gluten free but they both have lots of similarities. I got the Arepas Santa Barbara with steak and shredded cheese and on a grilled corn pocket. It was a bit cheesy and a bit corny like some in SF. The Arepa Catira had chicken and shredded cheese and crispy lettuce . It was savory and tasty. Come to Arepas to get some Arepas. Come take a stroll to the old neighborhood of "Don Juan Pinot Noir" to Arepas a Venezuelan restaurant with live music and a "wine bar "and pair it with an Arepa Camaron that has some "char" with some Maduro the plaintain not the ex-President of Venezuela or the "Maduro Cigar" Go to Arepas and get food from "Venezuela" historically known for one of the most Ms. Universe winners and also for their "telenovela " when it comes to Arepas they have "hella" they have some in SF that are so corny and cheesy filled with shredded "mozzarella" read more

Excellent food, but terrible customer service! I accidentally placed my order 15 minutes early, called, and a very angry woman answered. I asked if I could wait while they prepared my order, and she said yes, but a few seconds later they canceled it. Even though I order every day, they clearly don't care about making sales! Hire more staff because these people, including another guy today with the same awful attitude, will bankrupt the business! The flavor was actually pretty good, I'll give them that. The arepas tasted fresh and well seasoned. But the portion size for the price? That part was kind of shocking. slow and quite poor service. longgggg LONG wait times. finally, small (& mediocre tasting) portions being overpriced. i'll just only speak on my most recent visit (november 2025). it was a sunday and it was basically empty at around 5pm. everything from taking the order, getting the food, getting the bill, JUST TOOK FOREVER. i've never felt so embarrassed as i took my friends here for this experience. to keep my review short, so much lost time. we sat and waited to order for about 10 minutes. another 20-25 minutes for our first dish to come out, then another 10 for the next two to finally come. took 2 to 3 people and another 10 minutes to get the bill and another 5 to finally leave. there were at least three staff around, yet no one wanted to walk up to our table to engage, even if we tried getting their attention multiple times. frustrating. food wise, it was fine, truly fine. i don't find anything particularly positively memorable unfortunately. negatively? well, even with the sauces they give us, i find the meat dry and needing even more sauce that they give us, but i'd dare not to order more because im afraid it'll take too long. plus the menu really lacks vegetables, i find myself wanting a salad after my meal because the only greens i saw and had were in the arepas. i agree that portions are on the smaller side for such a steep price tag, and with all these negative factors stacked up, im disappointed. i unfortunately will not be returning. read more

Really good Arepas freshly made and prepared. So hot from the kitchen, so be careful not to pig in right away or you might burn your tongue. The slider sampler is my recommendation if you want to try first before ordering the full size Arepa. My personal favorite was the chicken. The aioli is a good complement but not so sure about the pico de gallo. They probably added that because there are more Mexicans in the area than Venezuelans. I came here wanting to support fellow Venezuelans and introducing my friends to some new dishes. The flavor of the food was fine although the arepas were ridiculously small for the price. The pictures on Yelp must be old because none of our arepas were overstuffed (like they should be). It reminded me of eating at someone's house, except you would eat two arepas if they were served that small. I wasn't even able to take any pictures because we were too starving by the time the food came! The real issue here is the service. Our waitress was kind about giving suggestions, and I loved the live music that they have here! got the Catira Arepa, which is chicken. It was really good! We were among the first customers to arrive and were seated promptly, but we watched as other guests who arrived after us were greeted, had their orders taken, and were served before us. Service - 4/5 we came here an hour before closing and it was popping! The waiters were definitely busy but still got us to a table and helped us out. We had to catch their attention a few times but we were always greeted with a smile.
