Acton DC is the second micro school I visited, and I was pleasantly surprised when I witnessed a group of mixed-aged children during a Socratic discussion. They were engaged yet relaxed, opinionated yet respectful. You have to see those kids in action. That is the best way to know what the school is all about. You will see a classroom where kids talk and think most. Their guides (they don't call them teachers) support them in their learning journey. Their guides do a fantastic job of helping these kids to be independent thinkers and doers. My kids love their school!

I truly believe any facility dedicated to the education of our future (our children) should be given five stars. I was a little perplexed about the size of the lockers. They look like they belonged in an elementary school. In this day and age where high schoolers are 10 feet tall, I don't think they should have to get on their knees to get in and out of their lockers. Maybe that is their exercise for the day. Who knows. The school was very clean and their trophy case was loaded. I would have taken a picture, however I hate to be in pictures (via reflective glass).

Hands down, this place is amazing under the leadership of Carolyn Burke, combined with the talented & comprehensive staff and active parents. The teachers were all experienced and loving, and the classes are crafted in enriching fun ways. A number of things impress me that make Westminster Weekday Pre-School stand out: (1) the continuing Ed classes for staff were conducted by UVA education department, and included the latest activities & techniques to cultivate early literacy in an age-appropriate play-based environment; (2) they play outside year-round and even had dedicated outdoor ed teachers who did fun nature activities; (3) there are a number of enrichment staff - Mr B music, an OT, etc; (4) they offer Conscious Disciple classes for the parents & community which are AMAZING; I've since done a lot of reading on research-based parenting strategies, and they all underscore what is taught in conscious discipline. It's just so nice to learn it in a systematic group coaching environment as opposed to reading a book or watching a video on your own; (5) they do a lot to foster a sense of community among the families & with service to the broader community. These are extra touches that I haven't seen elsewhere. At least not at this level - there are preschools that charge 3x the price so maybe you get that there. But I think this place is excellent. Having spent a career as a public school teacher, I was leery of Catholic schools (would they be…read morerigorous enough, are the teachers trained well, will they have a good science program, are they tech-savvy...) until my son was so unhappy in his highly-ranked, but larger, public elementary school that I was fearful for his well-being. This school heard my concerns as a parent, welcomed him with open arms, lent us uniforms when we needed them, and gave him access to the amazing science curriculum. The teachers are amazing, warm, intelligent, and thorough. The students there are just so kind. They use state of the art tech, post assignments online, communicate well and LOVE the kids. The smaller setting is amazing. He loves going to mass during school. He is at peace. The other parents went out of their way to invite us over, make sure we were in the loop about school events, emailed us...Like a welcome wagon. One child was out when my kid started school on a family vacation and brought him home a "welcome to school" souvenir. My child is learning a lot, but more importantly, he loves school again. This principal is a great leader. Don't hesitate. Wish I had enrolled my child sooner.

This review is for the TRACK ONLY! My husband & I found ourselves in this particular side of SE DC…read morelooking for somewhere to run sprints. I stopped somewhere and asked someone if they knew where a good track was to run and they pointed me to Ballou. The track here is GREAT! Given the neighborhood, I wasn't too sure if I'd find a decent track, but Ballou's got it! The turf was nice & new, the lanes were freshly painted, the bleachers were clean, etc. There were students & coaches on the football field, as well as a few people walking/running the track gettin their workout in. Everyone there was friendly. It really made for a great work out. We did our sprints, ran a few sets of bleachers & felt great! I would most DEFINITELY recommend Ballou's track if you are in the neighborhood & want to get a track work out in! (Also - The School kinda sits up on a slight hill, so if you want to get a little hill work out in, you can do that there as well!)
