Despite being overhyped, Armando Al Pantheon serves tasty and well made pasta. It's a solid place but not exceptional for how crazy it's to get a reservation. I made the reservation a month in advance and they sold out within 5 minutes. My expectations were high. When we visited for our 7pm dinner, mid June, there was a line of 20-25 people outside without reservations. They let us in instantly; however, those in line were asked to leave as they were fully booked. Such exclusivity was extra promising - there must be a reason for why this place is so popular! Once greeted, we were given a comfortable booth for 4. Music was eerily quiet. Yet, the service was buzzing like a quiet beehive. Great intro and recommendations by the staff. Servers switched and rotated between tables - an odd approach but it worked. The pasta was a bit too al dente for my taste. However, the sauces were delicious! Out of all pasta, cacio e pepe was my favorite. Yet the baba dessert blew me away! Delicious rum-flavored sweetness that paired exceptionally well with their balanced coffee. Bravo! However, 4 stars because I didn't understand how it's any better than nearby restaurants. The food didn't warrant the 1-month waitlist, and the al dente pasta was borderline undercooked. After tasting the alla gricia here at Armando's, I realized that Walter White has risen from his grave and used his chemistry magic in this kitchen. It's not difficult to get addicted to the dishes here. Also, the wine list is wonderful and the service top notch. You should not visit Rome without enjoying the offerings from Armando's. read more

Armando is truly a class by itself. An institution that clearly is proud of what they do and they do it with love and honesty . The food was amazing , we finally had a carbonara and alla gricia that was not too salty and truly appreciated what these dishes are meant to taste like. The tripe pasta and the lamb were delicious as well. Service is top notch and the prices are better than some ordinary places right meters away ! After four days in Rome, we are still talking about our excellent meal here. I would typically stay away from restaurants so near a major tourist destination, but on Stanley Tucci's recommendation, we went. We did not book a table, so we were delighted to wait for only 30 or so minutes on a Wednesday night and to be seated. We ordered the buffalo mozzarella and two mista salads for our party of four. The tomatoes on the bruschetta served with the cheese were absolutely delicious. I could eat a bowl full of them alone. We also each had pasta; a la gricia, a l'amatriciana, carbonara & cacio e pepe. All exceptionally good. The guanciale melts in your mouth and each pasta was cooked to perfection. I think my favorite was the amatriciana, but I may need to go back and eat them again just to be sure. A lovely, and reasonably priced bottle of local white wine went well with all of our meals and was served and described by the sommelier. We saved ourself for gelato on the plaza and left happy, full, and marveling at how reasonable the bill was. Highly recommended. read more

Since 1961 Armando Al Pantheon has been serving traditional Roman fare in the shadow of a timeless landmark, and although tourists have started to catch on, the tiny wood-paneled room is still largely populated by locals who desire a taste of Chef Claudio Gargioli's hearty and historic Food. Family owned for nearly sixty years, sons Claudio and Fabrizio as well as and granddaughter Fabiana now operating front and back of house, it is immediately upon entry that guests will note just fourteen tables, servers regularly turning away potential patrons who have unfortunately failed to make the requisite reservation. Rooted in history, and closed Saturday after lunch service through to Monday, it is once seated that guests are offered Bread and Beverage, plus a menu full of dishes that date-back centuries and a few daily specials. Still finding Chef Claudio involved, on this day touching tables and signing copies of his cookbook, it was after some debate that lunch was ordered in four courses, a starter of "Anchovy Cake" finding briny bits countered by Pine Nuts and Tomatoes while textural diversity was dialed up by Bread Crumbs and Cracklings. Following Roman tradition in offering plenty of Offal, housemade Fettuccine achieving excellence despite using anything but the parts typically considered "desirable," Armando Al Pantheon's Tripe is tender and flawless, Mint coming in mid-palate and quickly dissipating while Black Pepper and Tomato linger at the finish. We had the mozzarella and artichoke appetizer (as an American, and not well-travelled, this sounded odd to me--if you're like me, go for it!!), rigatoni, a beef and arugula dish, and roast potatoes. Absolutely delicious, with excellent and friendly service! Remember to book a reservation for 20%, making this place an absolute steal and SO much better!! It was our first meal in Rome, and we were completely blown away. We were seated with a smile, and the waitress understood immediately when we ordered three plates of pasta that we would share. Without any comment or judgement, she provided four sets of plates with sharing forks for each dish. I was grateful for this, having received so many judgemental looks in Paris... (my family has an awfully small appetite, so we tend to share). We ordered their lamb ragu with fettuccine, their ravioli with cheese and mushrooms, and their pesto farfalle. The lamb ragu came with not much colour at all - in fact, there was no signature red. However, the taste was AMAZING. It was so rich and gamey, and every piece of fettuccine was coated in lamb goodness. Our waitress (I suspect she's the owner) came and asked which dish was our favourite, and I couldn't help but point to this enthusiastically. She explained their process of making it, how they add some tomatoes but not too much to the point of being overpowering, and cook the lamb with carrots, onions, etc. Essentially, the meat is infused with all those different aromatics even though you can't see them! The ravioli with cheese and funghi porcini was full of earthy goodness, and so fragrant from the funghi porcini. The pesto farfalle was excellent, but did pale in comparison to the rest. It was slightly heavier, and very rich on the garlic flavour. All pasta were cooked al dente. We inhaled the dishes in record time, and soon desired more. We then ordered an extra pasta dish, choosing to get their swordfish spaghetti with tomatoes. This dish was also delicious, but more subtler in flavour. Stuffed and very pleased with the meal, we then chose to share a tiramisu. Their tiramisu is very creamy, and rich in cream and espresso. There were fewer ladyfingers than expected, so it was very much a light pudding. We left licking our lips, and rubbing our bellies. The bill, unbelievably, totalled up to be a mere 33 euros! I found out about Armando al Pantheon through Houston Foodie Friends where the restaurant came highly recommended. Since there are only 14 tables and about 40 seats, I decided to call ahead for a reservation. Since I was a party of one, the gentleman said he could get me a table at 7:30 pm. I took a day trip from somewhere and I ended up being late. They were very accommodating and fit me in at 9 pm. They have a very nice menu and I wish I had know more about it before going. I'm lactose intolerant so I don't eat too much food with cheese or butter. I was trying to get a recommendation from the server telling him that I like meats and seafood but I also wanted vegetables and was interested in having fresh homemade pasta. The server seemed irritated. I wasn't sure if it was because I didn't want to order one of the specials or because I asked him to repeat them (he was talking so softly) or because I was taking so long to order. I decided to order an insalata mixta, homemade pasta with chicken (he said it was liver), and, for dessert, dark chocolate mousse. I also had a nice glass of white wine. The salad was fine - it was a salad and nothing special. The pasta was way too heavy and when I couldn't finish it (which I'm part of 'the clean plate club' so for me not to finish it says a lot!), the waiter came over and said I only had 1 or 2 bites left and told me I could finish it. I wanted to save room for dessert and / or not to get sick. The waiter actually picked up the fork and tried to stick the pasta in my mouth! No thank you! I'm glad I saved room for dessert. The dark chocolate mousse was the best part of the meal. I savored every bite of it (and walked the 1.5 miles back to my B&B to work off 3 of those bites :)). Overall I'd say the meal was okay excluding the mousse which was outstanding. Would I go back there? Probably not. Recommend it to others? Probably not. Great classic lunch spot right next door to the Pantheon. This place has been around since 1961 and is the place to go to for no frills traditional Roman food. Don't believe the hype. I am not sure if it has changed owners since it was featured in several tv shows in the US, but our experience was extremely disappointing. The pasta was just ok and the appetizer which was mozzarella and Roman artichoke was terrible, the mozzarella tasted like a wet washcloth, service was very slow (not with just the food but like a 15 minute wait just to order wine). Just overall a bad experience which was surprising because every other place we have had recommended in Rome has been wonderful. read more

When I was looking up good restaurants that served great food without being a tourist trap - but was also tourist friendly, Armando al Pantheon came up. They're a really old, well-known restaurant in the area by the Pantheon. I had made reservations online on their website prior to my trip, which my mom didn't think was necessary. Cut to the day of our visit and every single table had a "Reserved" tag on it! A couple that had arrived as a walk-in before us was given a table, but they had to finish within 1.5 hour. Definitely make a reservation if you plan on eating here! My sister and I opted to split two appetizers and one pasta dish while my mom had a side salad and their soup of the day. This worked out really well because we were all super full by the time we left - I don't think I could've had my own pasta, as delicious as it was. We split the Assorted Cured Meats dish as well as the Mozzarella Caprese, which is one of my all-time favorite Italian appetizers. The buffalo mozzarella was very fresh and bouncy - it was great to be able to have one of my favorite dishes in Rome! The cured meats were also very flavorful and distinct. We decided on the fresh raviolis with ricotta cheese and spinach on the inside, cooked in a white mushroom sauce. The raviolis were very soft and cooked to a perfect al dente. The white sauce, however, was the highlight of the dish. Very light and refreshing! Service was attentive and steady throughout the meal, which was a nice change from all the other restaurants we've been eating in where service is lackluster (as is the norm in Italy, or so I've heard). read more

By far one of greatest meals of my 45 years of life . I heard about this place by watching Searching for Italy the show with Stanley Tucci, we happen to watch it a few weeks before are planned trip to Rome, I knew then I needed to try this place. As soon as we walk up you can see the line of people waiting outside . As I walk up notice a sign on door there all booked up . I ask the people in line and there say there waiting for cancellations . So I ask the host/waiter if there any chance on a table,he told me no tables and had already a list of people waiting, I pleaded with him I'm was on vacation and it's my last night in Rome if there any possible way please . He told me hold on I'll see what I can do he said be patience. And I'm grateful i was . Took around 45 minutes but totally worth it . We get seated and I knew what I wanted so did my wife as my daughters . They are known for the all"Amatriciana with guanciale, and there pasta al carbonara, and caicio e pepe, we order all three and a bottle of wine there wine sommelier recommend base on dishes we where eating . One word (pure bliss) in every bite . A true and traditional trattoria the serves Roman cuisine to the finest quality . Good food with some flaws. We started with the eggplant parmesan app. This was excellent. The eggplant was perfectly soft. The cheese was so savory and fresh. The tomato sauce was deeply savoury and made from very good tomatoes. The whole table agreed this was an excellent plate. I went on to order the Pasta Carbonara. The pasta was a bright yellow and was underexecuted. The bite was too firm and this distracted from the sauce, which fought to penetrate the pasta, to no avail. A bit pricier than the usual places but the meal portions were generous. We forgot to order main dish at half portion (70% price). Cheese cake (ricotta) in attachment was wow. Chicory was okay. Bread is from Roscioli - great. Buffalo Mozzarella was juicy but tougher than at Osteria da Fortunata (our favorite during our stay). Roasted potatoes were great. This was our first meal in Rome and a great start to our trip. Small, cozy restaurant that, despite being located in a tourist saturated area, did not feel like a tourist trap. Our server was definitely not the warmest person we met during our travels but the sommelier was a delight. He introduced us to our new favorite wine and was fantastically patient along the way. Food was exactly as it should be. Fresh, simple and delicious. I had the cacio de Pepe and my boyfriend had the carbonara. Both were tasty down to the last noodle. Our favorite thing on their menu though.....the mozzarella. I have never tasted cheese so heavenly and it was the best we had whilst traveling throughout Rome. We finished off with tiramisu which i ate nearly two times a day for the entire trip and while it tasted great, wasn't the best we had. I literally NEVER write negative Yelp reviews. This will be my first and that says a lot. This is my second time to this restaurant. This time I was with my just ten year old son and mother ( 81 yrs old) who has taken me to Italy my entire life- a special trip I would say as I was celebrating turning 50. I have traveled and eaten in fine restaurants all over the world. We are kind, well traveled and had a reservation as it was the first I made for this trip. I raved about it's food and history. Last summer was sweltering around 100 degrees and more every day. I was extremely hot in this tiny, un air conditioned restaurant. I was using the paper menu to fan myself as not to pass out. The waiter not only grabbed it abruptly from my hand but did not offer an alternative. He then was nasty when he realized I was ordering only a glass of wine, not a bottle. Well my son is ten and my mom is elderly. We then noticed the two tables down the gentleman was given a fan by the restaurant to use when I had no idea they even had one. I have never in my life been treated so poorly. I burst into tears and ran outside to then have my son console me. I then ripped this waiter apart in front of the entire restaurant. It has taken me an entire year to write this. I just saw this resturant on yet another list and it made me nauseous. Do not patronize this place. I don't care how "good it is" it is a tiny, unkempt, hot little hole in the wall with the worst attitude I have ever experienced. No food is great enough for that and trust me it is not that great. read more

A relief to see this place disappointed many others. Armando al Pantheon has the dubious honor of being the only mediocre meal we ate in Italy. A bland crostini with zucchini puree as a starter, followed by uninspiring pasta amatriciana, and an almost curdled carbonara sauce (although the pork was delectable). We wanted to order saltimbocca but our very bossy waiter told us to order a veal shank. It was fine. We ordered chicory as a contorno - we got broad beans instead. We arrived before opening & were accommodated sans reservation on a Saturday night. loved that you were able to order half portions for all of the Roman classic dishes. Pasta was perfectly Al dente and came off right from the stove. The carbonara sauce was over portioned to the amount of noodles and eggs slightly scrambled. I came to Armando al Pantheon towards the end of lunch service without a reservation and was very lucky to get a table. 2-3 people that came in after me were not so lucky. Service was very warm and we received a great wine recommendation that was reasonable in price. For starters I had the truffle toast, which was good but not amazing. If I ate here again I would order the mozzarella and artichoke appetizer. For my main I had cacio e pepe and it blew my socks off. I have ordered this dish several times at home and always feel like a chump for ordering in a restaurant what I make at home when I run out of groceries. Now i finally can understand why people order this, because Armando's cacio e pepe is fantastic. The pasta was so fresh, perfectly chewy and all of the ingredients came together perfectly.
