They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

You have to wrestle with signaling how you want the steak or burger prepared. For steaks the options come up. For the burger you have to add in the "notes" section after all your selections (I was fearful it would come medium and Mrs G only eats well done - so I was nervous as hell until I saw the "notes" option right at the end. It is a joke and pain in the butt Mrs G has never met a pickle she did not like - she did yesterday (presumably old?) after taking one bite and spitting it out Her burger was dry and tasteless. 80% of the meal returned untouched (the staff never asked why) The steak was a 10oz sirloin but tough, chewy and seemed to have fat or gristle in every bite (even after doing the best surgery I could to remove it before putting in my mouth) Another major failing of the "menu" system is that you never get to see or read exactly what you are getting - nor can you ask a waiter any questions. So I ordered chips (fries) as a side (there are only 3-4 sides offered as I recall) to my steak for an additional £2.95 to my £18.95 sirloin steak. When it came I see for the first time that the steak comes with chips - so now I had a sea of chips!! I mentioned this to a server - who said - "oh yes, people complain about that all the time". The car park is in the front of what is a fairly large pub, courtesy of its large dining room extension in 2000. Having negotiated some fairly narrow roads to get there, it was good to get inside the warm cosy surroundings and peruse the menu. The bar area of the Cock Inn was packed with locals and the bar itself had a wide range of drinks on offer, sadly driving, I had to stick to coke. The dining room was large with a variety of seating, tables in the window, to make the most of what I suspect is a tremendous view, large tables in the centre for groups and cosier tables for couples. The beamed ceiling awash with what looked like Christmas tree lights, and even trees that appeared to be coming out of the floor, decked with the same lights and the occasional Robin. Sounds strange, but it really did work, the feeling of a calm relaxing environment was great after a day's work. Menu wise, not huge, just right, we skipped the starters and went straight for the main courses, a good variety around the £10-11 mark, like gammon, various different pies, cod and other slightly more expensive dishes like rump of lamb and steak. I went for the fish pie, clearly homemade, a large portion packed with fish (cod, salmon etc), perfectly cooked in a creamy but not overpowering sauce topped with mash potato and a sprinkle of cheese, comfort food personified! My wife had the steak and ale pie, packed with filling, gravy and a thin pastry top, so good. The accompanying peas, carrots, new potatoes and cabbage were the perfect sides. Probably full enough to stop, we ventured to have a dessert, because we were so enjoying the food and the ambience so much. Classics like a cheese board, sticky toffee pudding were on offer, but I had the chocolate fudge cake, with ice cream, slightly disappointing, could have done with being a little more chocolatey. My wife had the homemade apple, date and ginger crumble; an unbelievably good crumble, arguably the stand out dish of the night, I was lucky enough to be able to finish it off, so often desserts flatter to deceive, its nice when a dessert lives up to its billing. On the completion of our meal, we immediately booked in for Sunday lunch in few weeks time, we were very impressed!

It's probably the only bar and restaurant to also be a maze, its HUGE and other than outdoor seating it surely doesn't feel like you're entering a restaurant. They have 3 sets of two doors but strangely only one is in use and there is no sign for this, once inside you basically go back on yourself into a dark, dingy, horrible corner where they have the lift. After leaving the lift, finding the main restaurant is equally as puzzling and difficult. Admittedly, the decor in the restaurant is unique and innovative and true style of The New World Company restaurants, albeit I preferred the Media City branch, there were many similarities with trees, huts etc. It to me felt like an old bank or barn but refurbished, possibly even a potential wedding venue. I dined here during an ongoing promotion where they offered 40% off the food bill in January and ordered my regular Chicken and Chorizo Hanging Kebab which would usually come to £13.95. I did notice the menu to be slightly stained and sticky however service was reasonable with the waitress (Becca), seems to do a lot, despite not being overly busy she seemed to have a huge workload due to them appearing understaffed and she still worked in a friendly and polite manner which is commendable. They do also offer a set menu all year round however this still at £12.95 for two courses this still ends up costing slightly more than the 40% off promotion, so I have no idea why I was offered it. Also, I found it strange that they labelled dairy-free and vegetarian on both menus but only NG (non-gluten) on the regular menu, meaning if you did order from the set menu, you'd have to cross-check between them. Sadly the slight cleanliness issue which arose with the menus seemed to continue with the cutterly (ready on the table) which also wasn't entirely clean sadly which also is uncommon by usual Botanist standards. I did enjoy the majority of my kebab, while I do feel the garlic seemed to taste more overpowering and heavy than other branches, I did also find the meat on the ends to taste a little chewy and overcooked, while the middle was fine. It still had some good flavours and was rather enjoyable and certainly warranted good value for money, even at 50% off. Certainly not the best branch of The Botanist I've been too, but my food was still pretty good, as was most aspects of my experience. I do feel a lot of small improvements do need to be made, however, only warranting a three-star rating for now.

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.
