This museum only retains one of its old gates. The rest is newly built over several decades. They even integrated a church in the museum. This makes for tough navigation (just as one of the attendants for directions to specific exhibits), but also contains the different eras to different buildings and atmospheres. Gotta love Germany: the museum offers a family ticket that afforded us acces for about 10 euros. Cool works allround make this museum a pleasant place to check when in Nürnberg.

A slightly surprising find in Nuremberg is this museum of national importance: an expansive…read morecollection of German art, culture and history from the Neolithic to the present. If you want to understand the complex cultural history of Germany prior to its political unification in the 19th Century, this is the place to come. Set aside at least half a day to do it justice. The museum itself has its origins in the growing sense of pan-German identity in the mid 19th Century, around the time the forces of unification were in the ascendent. Some of these elements (such as frescoes and stained glass) were rather Wagnerian in their somewhat romantic appropriation of German history, though much was destroyed in the 1945 bombing. (The curation is very honest in explaining how it differs from modern understanding of German culture.) The building itself is very modern, but incorporates much of a previous convent - an excellent setting for some of the religious works. It's hard to cover the scope of the collection here, but it starts with grave goods, arms and jewellery from the Neolithic to the period up to the Roman invasions in the first century BC. There is then a huge (and I mean huge) collection of devotional Christian art from the Frankish period right up to the 18th Century: this includes sculpture and metalwork, but above all, a vast collection of religious paintings, the highlight of which is a collection of works by Albrecht Dürer. This is all supplemented by galleries on domestic objects, costume, scientific instruments and the secular decorative arts; and world-class collections of musical instruments, early mediaeval tapestry and mediaeval armour. It includes the first ever globe of the world (contemporary with Christopher Columbus - so it misses out the Americas!); and a self-portrait by Rembrandt. The displays are for the most part in English and German, but audio guides are also available. There's a lot of emphasis on level access but it's worth checking access to some of the galleries. The museum has a complex and rather sprawling layout, and we walked just shy of two miles around the exhibits in four hours. Afterwards, there's an excellent cafe to rest your feet (you'll need it) and a very educational gift shop.

Restrooms are free and there's a mini cafe. The Sinwell Tower is 350 meter up, about 100+ steps. "Sinwell" in German means perfectly round so it's up a spiral wooden staircase. We were able to see the courtyard and the view of the city. It gets really windy up here. The deep well tour is every 30 minutes and last for 5 minutes. It's the castle's water supply at 50 meters deep. The water flows horizontally through sandstones and different layers of rocks as a filtration system. Four weeks after the rain, it flows into the deep well and ready for drinking. You'll see a video and a demonstration of the lit candle which proves that there is oxygen in the well.

Cool castle just a few minutes walk uphill from the Hauptmarkt…read more There are tours you can purchase to learn the history of the castle and see more of it, but you can always just wander around the grounds for free. We went that route, and it was a fun way to spend an hour or so. There are fabulous views of the city from the top and different sections to check out on all sides. The castle and grounds are well-preserved and kept. There are restrooms inside and a little cafe to grab a drink and pretzel after the trek up. It's kind of a must-see when in the city. Free castle fun? Why not!

A truly amazing place with tons of history about not only Germany, but the world as well…read more Beautifully preserved and adored by the city it resides in, this tour is surely worth doing. I'm not an art fan AT ALL, but it was still super interesting. If you're in Nürnberg and you don't stop here, you cheated yourself!

Pretty cool little house, museum, and art gallery! It was a nice, indoor escape from walking around…read morethe city, and, although most of the artwork is not original, it was neat to see the artwork in Durer's house. If nothing else, it is a good "window" to Renaissance life and living habits. As one of the few preserved and complete Medieval houses in Bavaria (i.e. not destroyed in WWII), it is a singular building. If you go to Documentation Nuremberg, you can get a combined ticket for a reduced price-well worth it!

Such an interesting museum…read more Visited four floors filled with toys from over 300 years of history . The toy rooms are organized by theme. Trains. Dollhouses. Dolls. Cars. Board games. Toy soldiers. Building sets. Magic tricks. I was very pleasantly surprised how interesting the displays were laid out. Even though the labels were mostly in German, it was nice to see the progression with the years from the 1800s to modern toys. Definitely worth a stop. It is included on the Nuremberg Museum day pass which is only €11.50 per day.

The museums are cheap around Nuremberg and if you add on the 3€ you can go to many in a day. The kids play area was great, lots of wooden toy options and the outside area to play was also awesome. The only downside is it isn't super interesting or interactive for kids

It is educational with great historical significance as it is literally built on grounds where the N@z! party was founded. Great thought was put in to the creation of this museum and after your visit you can walk around the beautiful lake outside or take one of the walking paths which allow you to reflect on the information you obtained from the Documentation Center. They offer storage lockers for coats and bags as well as vending machines with cold beverages you can take on your walk around the lake. If you're in the area I highly recommend you take the time to visit.

If you just want to look at the big arena, you can simply walk in. You can also pretty much park…read moreright next to the entrance. It's not obvious you can do this because entrance-way appears to only be for cars (arm-gate), but you can use the same passageway to waltz right in. I paid to go into the museum because I thought I needed to in order to just see the actual grounds, however, that was not the case. I don't think the museum was that interesting so I thought it was a bit of a waste of time and money. If you must check out this place, I recommend just parking near the entrance and then walking straight in for an interesting look at a historic place. Then you can read all you want about it online!

The DB Museum covers the history of railways in Germany from their beginnings in 1835 to the…read morepresent day: from industrialisation, through the unification of Germany in the 19th Century, their role in two World Wars (including their use in Nazi propaganda), the separation into East and West Germany and their subsequent restoration as a single enterprise once more. The museum has over a dozen locomotives, including Adler, which pulled the first train between Nuremberg and Fürth in 1835, to modern ICE trains. Highlights include the absurdly baroque carriages built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, alongside Bismarck's more functional equivalent. The museum has a particularly large collection of railway models (of all sizes), and on the first floor is large model layout that springs into life every hour. (Not to be missed.) There's a special section for children with lots of interactive exhibits, but they'll love the model railway and the full sized locomotives as well. The museum has a small shop and a cafe at the entrance. There's an audio guide for those who don't speak German: most of the interpretations aren't translated (though the headlines for each section are provided in English as well).

I spent 6.6 hrs in this collection. So many rail related museums have so few artifacts and photos…read moredisplayed; this one makes it a point to reverse this trend. There really is much history to tell here including the painful. Glad I included this museum on this trip.
