The worst bed I have ever slept on when staying at a Holiday Inn. For the owners, you need to do better and buy better quality beds. Free grab and go breakfast is also available including omelettes, sausages, pancakes, choice of prepackaged cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, bread, coffee, tea, and juice. For those interested in using the pool or fitness areas, proof of vaccination is required. Per the public health unit, only 1 person is allowed in the fitness area per hour (even if my hubby and I wanted to work out together). A comfortable stay for more reasonable prices than many other hotels in the area. Would definitely consider staying here again if in the area.

The TV selection is limited with no premium channels. And as usual the remote just as many places we have stayed are slow to react - either low batteries or just the way they are. The breakfast is premise eggs, some meat options and toast, bagels, cinnamon rolls and machine that made pancakes. Which were not useful for us except for toast and bagels. The coffee very weak. Surprised to see non dairy milk provided for cereals and oatmeal which we were pleased. Would definitely return.

We did the escape rooms (2 out of the 4) and they were FANTASTIC! Well put together, good props and the rooms were fun. They weren't too hard to figure out but a fun challenge. Aside from these rooms and some ax throwing...that's it for 'fun'. The restaurants were fine - breakfast brunch was a good mix, dinner was tasty...I had steak on one of the nights and it was delicious and made with care. Nothing stood out about the food, it tasted good and there was a decent variety to choose from. The rooms were very run of the mill, kinda outdated and what you might expect at an older resort in northern Ontario. Nothing to rave about. Was this the place I'd choose for a company retreat? Probably not - but only because you're stuck in 1 spot eating at the same places every day...but if you're only here for a day or 2, it would be ok.

Thankfully, Deerhurst had enough indoor activities (pool, game room, climbing wall, escape rooms, nightly activities including a very good magic show...etc) to keep us busy until the weather finally cleared enough to go skiing at the nearby Hidden Valley Resort on Thurday and Friday. Our room was well appointed (stayed in Summit Lodge) but there were a few things that did not work very well (fridge didn't get cold enough and water pressure in the shower was weak.). It was also inconvenient to schlep all our gear up and down the stairs without an elevator but that's on us. Note to self for the next visit. We ate at the Maple bar (tavern?) on our first night (nachos, wings and a pizza) and the beers (Muskoka brewery) were flat and the food was ho hum. Next morning's breakfast buffet at the Compass fared a bit better with good selection of entrees but weak coffee. Freshly squeezed OJ was a big hit with our girl. Last night's dinner at the Compass was probably the best meal at the resort but rather pricey for what you get (2 drinks, charcuterie board, octopus salad and chicken fingers for $100+). There was a magic show we attended with incredibly kind magician, Don Gudel and the infamous Cookie the Rabbit, which my daughter loved! The magician was patient and genial. He took the time to give ALL the kids who did not get a chance to volunteer during the show a chance to experience his magic first hand by staying a whole hour later to entertain his little guests. We got a chance to stroll around the resort grounds and from what we could see, it would make for a very lovely visit during the summer months as well. Maybe that's what we'll plan for our next visit to Deerhurst. All in all, we enjoyed our stay here and would consider returning.

Inside the room: - A mini fridge with milk and cream - A Keurig with complementary coffees, teas and specialty hot chocolates - A Dyson fan & thermostat controlled fireplace - An Apple router (super fast internet) - A TV loaded with Netflix for your chills ;) So first impressions are damn impressive, but it doesn't end there! The washroom is loaded with an extensive array of toiletries that you won't even find free in many luxury hotels, like nail polish remover, deodorant, brand new sleeping eye mask and more! The shower has both a regular handheld shower head and a rainfall one, with temperatures on an individual dial with numbers you can adjust (no hot lava vs icy cold settings here!). You also get your own spa bathrobes, I mean WOW. Breakfast is also a gourmet experience I would have happily paid more than $20 a person for. Darlene is very passionate about cooking and sources the best ingredients for her guests. On both days, we woke up to a 3 course breakfast. For my 2 days I got: 1. Fruit parfait; pear and nut muffins; sausage, scrambled eggs and french toast with an apple chutney 2. Citrus and yogurt plate with pistachios; cranberry scones; mixed herb eggs benny on potato cakes with bacon Everything had a unique spin and you can just tell the love that went into the food. If you wish to take advantage of the Algonquin Park trails, the boat staff will get you to the parking lot with directions and a smile. Malcolm is the Lodge Tour guide and he is an expert on the artist Tom Thomson. Julia has an amazing office staff, housekeeping and maintenance staff that keep the property moving along.
