We commissioned a portrait by one of the artists who spends time here as a gift for a dear friend. Operations manager Amy Kitchin worked with us throughout the process. We couldn't have asked for any better service than what we received. Amy even arranged for the artist, Charmaine Jones, to be there when our friend unwrapped the portrait & saw it for the first time. What a wonderful community nonprofit that provides opportunities, builds partnerships, and opens the community to art! We've been big fans and have appreciated all that Art Enables does for the community and artists over the past 20+ years. First, is their mission: "Art Enables is an art gallery and vocational arts program dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to make, market, and earn income from their original and compelling artwork." They have a beautiful space where the host art exhibits and where my family and I have learned so much about art and the artists. The art is beautiful and I find it hard not to leave with several creative pieces that are both well-priced and support artists with disabilities. Second, they host a number of wonderful community events. Every second Saturday, they have been hosting family-friendly workshops. I recently went with my 3 1/2 year old and she had a blast and walked away with her own works of art! Thanks for a great mission and for bringing the art community and neighborhood together! read more

Last weekend, I found the most incredible bookstore in D.C. Today, I discovered the most incredible art gallery in D.C. Our community is so fortunate to have Art Enables supporting our local artists with disabilities. And the talent is amazing! I bought two originals, and it was really hard to choose because I wanted so many. What a wonderful organization. read more

Art Enables is a great organization that enhances creativity while fundraising for a special cause. I used to help prep food for Art Enables events where the art work would be sold. After passing this place many times on the way into DC on New York Avenue, I finally was able to visit!! Don't be too confused...there is parking in the back lot to enable you to park and walk in the back doors. When I visited, everyone who worked there was surprised that I walked in. They spoke to me and asked how I found out about their space. Their website is helpful, and you will have the opportunity to see all of the work shown on the website as well as maybe meeting some of the artists. I wish this place was definitely more accessible and located somewhere closer to other shops. However, the art is amazing and it is worth taking a drive over to check out their space. They also have art shows around the city, but I think visiting the gallery/studio space is much more intriguing. When I visited, I was thrilled to look at the art on the walls, in bins, in drawers, and pieces in different stages of completion. Most of the artists were having lunch, and then began working in a communal area in the studio. While I was browsing through completed file drawers of pieces, one of the artists came up to me and told me about many of her pieces I was looking at. It was so inspiring to be in this amazing place that owner Joyce has created and to meet so many people who are thriving through her mission! I definitely intend to spread the word around town because this is definitely a place not to be missed! Plus, their prices are so great, you may just find something that catches your eye to take home, just like I did!! read more

As my "fans" may know, I have been to almost every gallery in and around DC. I had been on the lookout for a place where I can score out of the ordinary art at prices that don't make me faint. I found the combination of low prices and appealing art at this place Art Enables is a working studio.The artists here call themselves "outsiders," but I don't see it that way. The talented individuals happen to be either persons with developmentally or mentally challenged, but that does not affect the high quality of their works. The teachers here are local artists from the district as well as Virginia and Maryland. The style used is mostly folk art. Or you can still grab one of their 2007 calendars with each month featuring a different artist. Art Enables tends to show their artists at other galleries or art events. They are currently in the middle of remodeling the main gallery but when I showed up they welcomed me and invited me to see the art studio which had artwork on each wall. I was very happy that I still had the opportunity to see some fabulous art in the main studio and got to meet some of the artists. Even from the small selection that I saw, the artwork was fabulous and varied greatly. I was really happy to find out that you can purchase art through the website but it was a real pleasure to meet and see some of the artists while at work. Next time I'm DC I plan on visiting again.
