Last June (2024), I discovered the Art Supply House while looking for a parking spot to grocery shop. What a find! The staff was extremely helpful, the selection and quality of items was just right, and I left feeling impressed. The first place I stopped in Durango this time around (July 2025) was the Art Supply House. And yet again, the staff (Lily and Olivia) were on it. I went in looking for one thing and left with many. Lily explained the subtle differences between two items I was interested in, and they both went above and beyond in being friendly, informative, and helpful. Horrible customer service. I purchased a lovely journal to use for bread journaling, I was really excited about it. I took it home and immediately started to document my personal recipes! After a few minutes of writing I noticed green dye on my hands. I went to wash it off and it wouldn't come off! I had already written so much and the pages were so pretty that I tried to salvage the situation by putting wax on the cover to keep the dye from coming off any more. Well, it worked for a minute, but then today when I went to use the journal to make bread the dye started again. Now I have green dye on my hands while I try to kneed bread. So I went back to the store to ask if I could just please have a replacement in exchange, seems simple enough, but apparently since I altered the journal, I'm not allowed an exchange or return. The journal I purchased was $15, I as asking for an $8 replacement. Now the right thing to do, in a small town, where you rely mostly on our local and repeat business (I spend $100s of dollars in there each time I go because it is more expensive to buy there vs on line, but support local, you know...) anyway the right thing to do would be "wow, thank you for letting us know this is happening to one of our products, we're so sorry, yes, please have a replacement, we hope this doesn't tarnish your option of the other products we cary" But nope, instead "our policy says once you alter the product you can't return it." Welp, you've lost my business - and I'll be telling everyone I know how terrible your customer service is, how dismissive of concerns you are, go to Walmart instead at least they'll help you. Pretty bummed that this company doesn't really stand behind their products that local artist are buying. I could've bought this off Amazon but wanted to support local. Went home, followed the directions, and tried it, and everything I made cracked like a stick. So I brought it in and wanted to see if they could take it back since they had recommended the wrong product, or even just deduct that amount from me buying the right product from them which was $2 more and they said no to anything more than 10% off which I already get regularly from being a student. I'm not saying they HAD to do anything but for a $3 item, that says it was made in 2020 (so been sitting on their shelves for 4 years already) thought they might be a little more helpful especially since I asked if I was getting the right stuff while I was there. I had at least 50% of blue and 75% of yellow left with the receipt. Left feeling pretty bummed and will be buying from Amazon because they do back their products. :( read more

I walked into the art store and began a conversation with the owner about ideas to hang paintings on my adobe walls. He gave me a great idea on a hanging system using supplies from the hardware store that will work as well as those fancy-schmancy hanging systems galleries use. Visited Durango and was looking for a new graphite pencil. They have a testing table which was awesome, because I was able to determine exactly what I needed. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Store had a lot more products than I expected for a small town. Definitely would shop there again. read more
